974.0. "Merrimack River Trip" by RAINBO::MACINTYRE (Fish are rising up like birds) Tue Feb 07 1989 17:16

Anyone interested in a 3 day canoe trip down the Merrimack?

A friend and I are considering a 3 day float sometime in Apr/May and we'd
welcome anyone who'd like to join us.

We'd be putting in at the confluence of the Pemigiwasett and Winnipesaukee
rivers in Franklin, NH which forms the headwaters of the Merrimack on a Friday
morning, camp along the shoreline Friday and Saturday nights, spend the
days doing more casting than paddling, and Sunday afternoon take out at the
launch by the roller skating rink in Concord, NH.

(geez, last spring it was Okeechobee, I guess that's what happens
when you start having kids 8^)

Do you have any campsites spec'd out, or are you going to wing it?

No campsite locations checked out yet, but I'm going to try and get
on that section of the river prior to the trip to check things out.

It shouldn't be any problem finding a place to camp for the night
since the shores are forested through that section. Just find
the first good looking spot after dusk, setup camp, and make sure
you leave the place in as good or better condition than when you
    arrived.

I did read about one small area where overnight camping was not
allowed, but I'm pretty sure that was on the Conneticut River route
    that I was considering.

Yesterday we decided to finally do the canoe/fishing trip mentioned
in .0, next weekend Jul 29/30. We'll be doing it in 2 days rather than
3 days. At the moment we have just 2 canoes going. If anyone is
interested in joining us let me know.

Oh, now I remember. I was thinking of Lake Francis (sounds a little
like Franklin, sort of...) That's way up there - supposed to have
    some giant pickerel, too.

We ended up with 6 people & 3 canoes on our canoe trip last weekend.

The river is real nice up that way. Caught a bunch of bass.

Definitely plan on doing that section more often.
