This is along the lines of a "Public Service Announcement" for any
of the guys that may be thinking about going to Pulaski to do some
Steelheadin' before mid - March: DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT GOING UP
UNLESS YOU KNOW (!!) THEY ARE RUNNING WATER. Plan on being able
to either go or cancel on short notice - this means calling the
Salmon Hotline (315 298-4343) several days prior to departure, and
even the day before you leave.
Normally Niagara Mohawk runs water Mon. through Friday during winter
months - not on weekends. When it gets cold, the River turns to
ice and slush, and you can't get a line down. The small creeks are
frozen, and the Lake is also unfishable, which means you have zero
options (just like many of us at DEC).
I just returned from a trip with Brian (Country Carpenter)
Aron, Tom (Brockton BeerBuster) Coots, "Lavender Jack" Hagerty and
your obedient deviant. Water temps started at 33 and quickly dropped
to 30 or below, which, coupled with 3 degree air temps and NO WATER
turned the river to Jell-O. We were breaking ice to get to the few
marginally open pools the first day, and it was sealing up behind
us almost immediately. There are still quite a few fish in the river,
but in these conditions they can't be approached. We did a little
"Cold Weather R & D" on clothes/footwear combinations, and if anybody
needs any info, just drop me a line.
Other than the comradeship, a promise from each of us to take the
others to Alaska if we hit MegaBucks and a vow to fish Skaneateles
or Northern NH with "the Country Carpenter", the trip was a BUST!
We couldn't even get the Toronto "Porn" station on cable! By the
way, if any of you own Anheuser Busch or Coor's stock, a simple
"thank you" to us will suffice.

Hey Bandit,
I see you have been inflicted with the same fever I have had for
the past month. Probably figured with all the warm weather we have
had recently, that the steelies would be swarming up the rivers.
I have been tying wigglers in mass quantity in preparation for my annual
trip!!! Do you need any or know anyone who does ??? The steely fever
gets unbearable at this time every year and the doctor says the
only cure is to soak your body in cold water for at least a week
and tangle with at least 25 of the worlds greatest gamefish before
you will be totally cured. This of course is only a temporary cure.
Sorry to hear you hit a cold snap last week, but we both know "thats
Steelheadin". Thats why God created Steelies first and Budweiser
2nd!!!! Hope your next trip is a winner!!! keep me posted

I could use a dozen or so of those great Spring Wigglers you tie,
but could I get 'em a bit smaller, and most of 'em purple this
time ? That's been a hot color up on the Tug Hill Plateau, but the
guys use small flies with 2# leader. Not much of a cushion in cold
weather/water...

Bandit -
How small are you talking ?? I have some size 6's tied in single
hook versions and size 8's in the salmon double hook versions. Only
single hooks are allowed on the Salmon River if I remember correctly.
Purple????? Haven't heard that color used before, but I could find
some chenille that color. The other colors I have are black, brown,
tan, grey, yellow, dark green, pink, orange and chartreuse. Did I give
you size 4 or 6 last year?? Let me know, and I will get you your flies real
soon!!! 2 lb. leader, huh?? Wow !!!! Lowest I have ever gone is
4 lb. and that is pretty thin !! I usually stick with 6# and go
to 8# in high water. But when the water temp is in the low 30's,
the steelies are more lethargic when hooked and you can probably
get away with that thread. I was in Michigan over Christmas and
managed a drift trip down the Pere Marquette. We bagged two nice
Steelhead and a 20 inch brown but the water was 34 degrees and the
fish didn't fight like the fish we hook in 45 degree + water. That
was the 1st time I ever plugged for them. I definitely prefer
my noodle and a fly to plugging for them !!!! Let me know what size
you need and I'll get them to you ASAP!!!
