960.0. "'89 Stratagies" by STOWMA::LANGE (That's Big-BouTAY...BIG-BOUTAY!!) Thu Jan 26 1989 13:06
With ice-out just around the corner,I thought it might be a good time
to discuss Tactic's,plans of attack,if you will, and what arsenal of
bass nailing weapons we'll be using this year.
Unlike I've been doing in the past, this off season I've been doing a
lot of reading in the fishing mag's Mostly 'Fishing Facts',Bassmaster,
In-Fisherman,and Bass'n.
Some really well written articals that have provided me with valuable
info were the "Structure Fishing"(the 1st of a 2 year continuing series),
and the "Comeback Rod" articals in the latest issue of BM.
The comeback rod artical gave me a better understanding of why I don't
catch those fish after they miss your plug the first time. The time
wasted reeling in to toss a slow faller, made me question.'Why not
almost always use the Zara with the hole drilled, and have a GitZIt drop
out the back'....
Which brings me to the 1st of my three set-ups for lunker chasing this
year.
I currently have 3 rod set-ups,only because taxes haven't returned yet.
2 spinning rods,and a bait casting set-up.
On my 7' rod I'm going to set it up for cranking, with small diameter
8lb test. Mainly to get a greater casting distance with lighter line,
thin line for less resistance getting the 15,or 20+ to the depth it's
made to go. Long rod,to adapt the Paul Elias technique. It all makes
sense to me so I'm going to give it a try.
The 6'6" rod I have, I'm going to set it up with the aforementioned
Zara, with dropping GitZit for "instant" comeback, get a missed
strike...flip the bail, let the gitzit free fall, and wait for the tug...
The bait caster will either be set up with a Pig'n Jig,Grub,
Texas Rigged,or Carolina Rigged worm...depending what the structure, and
weather conditiions may be after I find them by cranking....
comments,techniques,whatever....would probably help make all of us
better fishermen...

| Tactics for '89, huh? Well...seeing as I did OK in '88, I don't think I'll
change too much, maybe just refine them a little.
Jeff, I don't think your Zara Spook and Gitzit combo would work too well as
the drag of the Gitzit would probably prevent you from putting any
walkin-the-dog action on the Spook. The reason a lot of the drop-baits have
feathers or hair tied to the treble hook is to do exactly what you want to
do...entice ole bucketmouth into coming back for seconds.
BTW, anyone heard any dates for the Pawtuckaway Open this year?

| on the subject of winter reading... I spend a great deal of time
reading the rags over the winter. Often I don't have a chance to
read them all during spring/summer - all free time spent fishing!
Anyway, what I do over the winter is pile up that past years magazines,
go thru the indexes, and enter the articles into a little database
that I have on my system at home. This way I can search the database
for a specific place/lure/technique/whatever and usually come up
with a bunch of different articles on the subject. Great refernce
library.
As far as `89 tactics go, once again my yearly goal is to become
more versatile. Going to try and gain confidence in more lures
and try and learn to fish deeper water.
