944.1 | South not Quaboag | PACKER::BACZKO | Is it ICE yet? | Mon Jan 09 1989 12:27 | 10 |
| Hey Bill,
That was me, I should correct it, it came out of South Pond.
Although the state does not stock south with Pike there is a small
river that connectes Quaboag with south. I saw a picture of the
fish WOW 47" 35 Lbs. and caught on a medium shiner with 12 lb test
mono. He gaffed it when it got near the hole.
Let me know when you want to make a trip, the Gitzit and I are
always up for a trip to the Boag.

to Quaboag by a small channel. I'll try to confirm.
Quaboag's a great place to fish. A lot of big bass a picks there
too! In a couple of weeks I'll be ready to do a Sunday out there.
Bob (lot's of flags last saturday but only one bass)

| QUABOAG IS OFF RTE 9 IN E. BROOKFIELD. TRAVELLING WEST ON RTE 9
YOU'LL TAKE A LEFT AT A DRIVE IN CLAM BAR. THE WATER IS ABOUT 1/2-1
MILE DOWN ON THE RIGHT. IF YOU GET TO THE BROOKFIELDS AND CAN'T
FIND, JUST STOP AT A GAS STATION FOR DIRECTIONS. IT' EASY.

I have read in the "In-Fisherman mag." that when Ice fishin
it is best to "stagger" your bait when fishin for Pike. They
tell ewe to try baiting your tip-ups with one having a small
shiner one large another with a dead shiner one with a sucker
and one with a dead sucker. It seems that if they are active
it doesn't matter what they eat, but,if they are inactive
they do not want to fool with a small fast moving fish and
will go for the larger live bait or dead bait any comments.
Oh ya they tell ewe that jigging for pike will out produce
tilt fishin in the long run and also produce the biggest
fish compared to a tilt.

Keg,
Rumors of Pike led about 30 of us to Shaw Pond in Becket Mass
yesterday. I saw one short (20-24") taken on a tip-up all day.
I had one flag (and a half chewed shiner) and all I jigged up was
about two dozen panfish (perch, bluegill and bullheads).
The guy that caught the pike had it back in the water before anyone
got close...don't know what the bait was but he had light mono with
no leader and a small hook. I think there's merit in using smaller
shiners ... I was catching perch smaller than the shiners I had
on my tip-ups.
-SSS-
What I learned was don't go to the latest hot-spot that the local
outdoor writer is touting.

| Just for the record,
I caught my first pike yesterday at the A1 site (vacation day).
It was not legal size (17 inches), but it was nice to finally catch
one. Would anyone like to go tomorrow? Not necessarily to the
A1 site, but preferably to an area that has pike. I have another
vacation day, and would like to spend it fishing :*).
How 'bout it? 'Gitzit, Les, Keg, interested? Let me know/

| Yes Keg, it's true! A new record pike has been caught by me, Bill
Dance. I was fishing Lake Monomonac early Saturday using live 22
inch suckers for bait. The behemoth took the bait at 7:52, and
after a half hour struggle (and a lot of ice chipping) I pulled
the 40 lb. 8 oz. fish through the ice.

By the way Keg, I own some prime Bass Lakes in Florida. Would you
be interested in buying one??

944.21 | Thars Pike in them thar hills!!! | HAMSTR::JAFFE | The Big Blue Buster from CMG | Tue Apr 18 1989 16:35 | 20 |
| All the books I have read indicate that Pike is not indiginous to
New Hampshire. I am an avid Piker going at least once per year to
Canada. I am new to New Hampshire and went out in my new boat for
the first time this season yesterday. I picked a nearby piece of
water, the Nashua River. To my surprise, aftrer only 10 minutes
of flippin a #3 gold meps into the abundant tree stumps in the river,
I hauled back on what I first thaought was a piece of wood. When
it started to tug in different directions, I got real excited, but
had no idea what it could be. I had 10 pound mono on but no wire,
just the meps tied to the mono. I loosened the drag and 10 minutes
later saw the piker nearing the boat. He also saw me and did his
pike thing, dove under the boat. Not to worry - I hauled him in
a minute later as he was probably all tired out. He measured 37"
and not having a scale, would not even guess at the weight but it
was typical.
It was not a fluke (ha ha). I caught 2 more pilke and 1 pickerel
jsut to prove that NH didn't grow a large species of Pickerel. I
am pleasantly surprised that the nearby Nashua holds a springtime
full of my favorite sport fish.

| I'm glad to hear that there is pike in that river because last
year I thought I caught the BIGGEST PICKEREL in the state!! I
was out bass fishing and using 8 inch blue worm when all of the
sudden there was a huge explosion from the water!! Well after I
finally got him near enough to the boat to see what ate my worm
I was amazed by the size of the pickerel that was at the end of
my line. After a closer look at this monster I realized that it
wasn't a pickerel but wasn't sure what it was? This baby must
of went close to ten pounds easy!!

| Re .22
I entered the river in Nashua, just west of the intersection of
route 3 and exit 6. There is a great boat ramp about a mile up stream
from there. once on the river, I went up towards Hollis about 1/2
mile. THere was a few coves on both sides of the river and each
cove had a lot of good cover, especially logs, trees and bushes.
I did not go near the dam.

944.25 | What's the current like on the Nashua? | CASV02::PRESTON | Better AI than none at all | Thu Apr 20 1989 14:29 | 12 |
| What's the current like in that part of the river? I have a 17'
canoe with a 28lb thrust trolling motor, and I've been meaning to
try some of the local rivers (Nahshua and Merrimack), but the canoe
can't handle going against much of a current. I've been out on the
Merrimack in N. Chelmsford/Tyngsboro area, and it takes a good while
to work my way upstream.
Gold Mepps #3, huh? Have you ever tried one of their weight-forward
lures like the Lusox? Supposed to be good for Pike.

944.26 | Gentle waters and an invitation | HAMSTR::JAFFE | The Big Blue Buster from CMG | Thu Apr 20 1989 14:45 | 24 |
| Ed,
The current is slow and mild, at least on the one day I was out
there. I have heard from others that this is typical of the river's
makeup. I do not think you would have any problem with your setup.
My buddy here in MKO has a Crawdad with a 3HP electric and says
that this does real fine.
I have been eyeing the new Meps in the K Mrt and it is only a matter
of time before I buy one and try it out. I am going on a Canadian
trip in May for Pike and this would be the perfect time to try it
out.
By the way, I have one opening for someone to go on this Lake Ontario
Pike fishing extravaganza May 18 - May 21. We have 3 DEC Pikers
meeting a party of 8 others and need a fourth to fill out the cabin.
Cost of the 4 days including accomodations, food, beer, and a sharing
of transportation (7 hours by car) and gas for the boats is about
$150.00. One great time for a very small amount of money. Last year
I cought 19 Pike all over 30" in the 4 days and hooked too many
of the Largemouth Bass (not in season yet) to even count. Anyone
interested should contact me immediatly.

When you get back from your Canada trip, let me know how you
do and what to use up there. A few of us at CXO (~6) are planning
a 3 day fly-in Northwest of Ear Falls for around the end of July.
I want ALL the details so that I can go catch that 30 pounder.
If you're interested, it is $600.00/person for the week from CXO
to CXO. Now, all you have to do is get to CXO. :-)
