939.1 | I'm up for some fishing... | SAVVY::LUCIA | | Wed Jan 04 1989 16:47 | 7 |
| I'll brave the cold, provided that there are fish to catch. I am tired of
not being able to go (not an ICE person, 'though I might show at the derby to
check things out). Let me know if you plan on going...

| Gee, thanks guys, I feel a lot better now about spending last Friday
Morning on the beach!
Not too much goin' on down here in Jersey, but still some stripers
available (locals), flounder in the rivers, ling in the surf. Looks
like we might even get a whiting run in the surf this winter.
Don't you New Englander's get a good shot at cod in the surf at
this time of year? Seems like each winter Saltwater Sportsman runs
an article about this.

939.3 | cod casting a cold prospect... | ERLANG::LEVESQUE | Torpedo the dam; Full speed astern! | Thu Jan 05 1989 12:48 | 15 |
| It is possible to catch cod from land around this time of year.
I think the fishing is actually a little bit better in march.
The problem is finding a spot where the windisn't such a factor.
You really have to pick your days. The best time for fishermen is
when there is balmy weather and/or a west wind. East winds are often
too strong; it's difficult to get enough distance casting into the
wind with cold hands, etc.
The old timers tell me it's best to fish on warm, cloudy days. I
haven't done too much winter surf fishin' as it's usually too cold.
Around April 1st I will be a fool and go out in search of cod. Perhaps
Joe Amato or Capt. Cod (new Grady 25 owner) will have been bitten
by the bug sufficiently by then. :-)

| I remember seeing cod being cought in the Winter off the jetties
at the mouth of the Merrimack while I was duck hunting in the area years ago.
I also used to surf cast for them in the Spring on Plumb Island. If I remember
correctly they didn't show up off the beach until early May. I remember
that early fishing as being great; lots of small cod. The flesh was
exceptionally firm in that cold water and they were very good eating.
Now that I live in Maine and fish from a boat, I wait till April, go
out once and freeze my *&#$ off. Then I put the boat away again until it warms
up. :^)
