    Albequeqe??? Do you mean Albeturkey?

912.2I doubt it but......VICKI::DODIERTue Nov 22 1988 08:2315
Someone out there could probably better answer this but I would
say it's doubtful. When you fly into Alburquerqe (sp?) and your
looking from the plane there is one thing that really amazed me.
This was the lack of visable ground water. The only thing I remember
being close was the Rio Grande river. This river was so small and
shallow that I could have made better time driving down it in my
4x4 then I could in my canoe (if you get my drift).

There was one other place I remember seeing from the air but
it would be quite a drive. It was a lake that was sitting on top
of a mesa. I don't know the name of it.

I'd stay away from rio grande,
in yesterdays paper there were snipers shooting people just enjoying
the rapid as they were on vacation, 1 died 2 others just recieved
gun shot wounds, they only made it 2 miles out of the original 12
mile river trip, it's all over the papers.

-< Yes, there are fish in the desert !>-

Contrary to popular opinion, there are numerous places to fish
    in the Albuquerque area.
Tiny Tingly Beach near downtown Albuquerque is kept well stocked
with trout and catfish, as are the numerous irrigation canals
throughout the city. A few miles south of the city at Isletta Pueblo
is Isletta Lakes ( more like ponds ) where no lisence is necessary
but you pay a small fee for fishing . Isletta Lakes is stocked with
small mouth bass, trout, catfish, and sunfish.
Most Indian reservations have fishing areas for a fee (tribal
members fish for free ). At some reservations you pay by the
inch for the fish you catch (@ $2.00 an inch).
If you are adventurous and don't mind a drive to get to the
*good* fishing, there are numerous trout streams and lakes in
northern New Mexico and Elephant Butte Lake ( 40,000 acres - miles
and miles of fishing ) in southern New Mexico.
The Rio Grande is good for catfish , salmon and trout. In
reference to reply .3, snipers are the exception rather than
the rule. The sniper attack in reply .3 happened at Big Bend in
TEXAS and not in Albuquerque or even in New Mexico.
My personal favorites for fishing are the numerous trout
streams and lakes in the Jemez Mountains to the northwest of
Albuquerque (about an hour's drive). I recommend boat fishing
at Cochiti Lake (near Sante Fe) and especially at Elephant
Butte Lake. Massive lunkers have been taken at Elephant Butte.
The variety of species of fish there is amazing.
So, yes, there are fish in the desert. If you are ever in
New Mexico, be sure to check it out. You'll be glad you did.

                          Happy Fishing,
    				-Robert

Well, I may be moving to the ABO area for a years temporary
assignment. I'm glad to hear there may be some decent fiashing...
Are there places that rent boats on any of the lakes ? If so,
does anyone know a ball park figure of the cost. I's also be
interested to hear what species are in the bigger lakes so
I can plan tackle accordingly. Thanks for any info,

    Marty

NOTE 912.5 REPLY; Re; GOING TO NEW MEXICO
---------------------------------------------

 YO! Marty,
The are several lakes with a large variety of fish here.
The closest from Albuquerque is Cochiti (45min). It's supply is the Rio Grande
and is man made. It is 'no wake' and trout, bass and pike are the main
species. Fishing below the spillway from shore produces well as well
as along the dam.

The real monster lake is Elephant Buette Lake 3hrs to the
south. It's HUGE. The bass/walleye fishing is excellent but over shadowing
that is striper fishing. Last week stripers of 50lb+ (36" girth!) have
been taken. Spawn season is March/April & should be great. I am sure
you can rent boats here. Camping, marinas etc. is plentiful. Bring
heavy gear for stripers - 30lb test & 1/2oz horse head jigs in white
and chartreuse are the best producers trolling. (Guide services are available)
NIGHTCRAWLER~~~~~~ bass & beer hunters is one of my favorites!

Navaho lake is North west ~ 3hrs and Conchas Lake is east
but about 4hrs. Both are trout/pike/bass lakes with walleye as well.
Fenton lake is good for a canoe or from shore for trout.

I'll send DonMac the NEW MEXICO fish regs when I get a
chance. Well, got to go get the boat wet and make a rooster tail :-)

    YO-
A little more info on Elephant Buette lake in New Mexico:

It's 40 THOUSAND ACRES, and rated as one of the top ten BASS
fishing lakes in the country. Pass this on to the dude who is
transfering to APO.

Does Elephant Butte freeze in the winter ? Does anyone know
the habits of landlocked stripers ? Do you troll deep, shallow ?
Are downriggers used ? Do they hang in close to structure or
do they suspend over deepwater ? Boy, I wish DEC would ship
my 19 footer out for a year !

According to a transplated New Mexican, it does not freeze.
