910.0. "Steelhead Update !!!" by KELVIN::VALOIS () Mon Nov 14 1988 08:08

    Just spent a week up in the Salmon River,Pulaski area, Steelhead
    fishing. Fishing was sort of slow on the Salmon River for steelhead
    allthough we did land a few beauties,and 1 20-25 lb. Chinook on
    6lb. test line. (took about an hour).
    However fishing on the Oswego River was Fantastic. We fished the
    Oswego for 3 days straight. Everday day we were into several
    LARGE steelhead 10-18 lbs. Also the river was loaded with some
    real nice browns up to 10 lbs. Lots of lake trout had entered the
    river,(up to 8-9lbs.) but had to be returned because they are out
    of season. Largest steelhead landed for the trip was 13 3/4 lbs.
    Best baits were single eggs,egg sacks tied in blue or green.

    Totals for the trip were 69 fish on !!
    Landed 21 !! All fish but 3 were released to fight again.

    Again when fishing the Salmon River,Pulaski area, keep the Oswego
    River in mind!
                                                         Good Luck !!!
                                                          Steve

910.1Steelhead or Rainbow???USRCV1::FRASCHMon Nov 14 1988 15:067
    Steve,

    Whats the difference between a "Steelhead" and a plain old Rainbow?
    I get lots of Rainbows trolling, but then they might be "Steelies".

910.2Some Info.KELVIN::VALOISTue Nov 15 1988 08:2423
    Don,
      Steelhead are a migratory rainbow trout. they have been introduced
    to the great lakes from the west coast (Washington St., Oregon,
    Etc).
      They make 2 runs a year in the tribs. of the Great Lakes.
    The first run is in the fall, Thats when they enter the rivers to
    feed on the eggs of the spawning Pacific Salmon. Some fish will
    remain in the river all winter long,others will go back to te lake.
      The second run is in late winter,early spring. Thats when all
    adult steelhead enter the river to spawn. Unlike Pacific Salmon,
    Steelhead being a true trout do not die after spawning.
      Steelhead in Lake Ontario,were i fish average 7-10lbs.
    The New York state record for Steelhead is around 27-28lbs.
      The only other migratory rainbows around this area that i know
    of is in Vermont. I know that they run the Willoughby River in
    their spawning run in the spring, but i don't know know if the
    natives or people fishing for them call them steelhead or not.
      I hope that this info. helps you out some. If i can help you
    further, contact me at DTN 689-1547.
                                                  later,
                                                  Steve
