from other anglers and a cold. Only October and the chill is

re. The grill
I just started Ice fishing last year, because I had no more catalogs
to look through for stuff i "really needed" in the spring, so I
figured what the hell. So, not knowing too much about the sport,
I went out bought some tip-ups (there were some tip-ups that were
cheaper, but they had little pictures of snoopy and the rest of
the gang, so I spent thie BIG bucks). So any how, off to lake
Attitash I go in hopes of catching a Northern Pike. The only way
I could talk my partner into going, was to bring the grill.
So after a while (spent struggling with a less than razor sharp
hand auger) we sit down and crack open the cold ones. The action
was slightly less than non-existent, so it's time to fire up the
grill for a little heat and munchies. As soon as the Charcoal is
ready (still not even a wind-blown flag), on go the burgers and then,
wouldn't you know it two flags, of course at opposite ends of out
layout. Both turned out to be small pickerel, and by the time we
got back to the the burgers, the Merrimac Ma. fire department had
been summoned and the blaze extinguished. Kiss those burgers goodbye,
good thing we had more. But, those were the only flags we got the
rest of the day !! So, I'll let you guys in on a little secret,
if you want to GUARANTEE a couple Flags, you just have to sacrifice
a couple of burgers to the Ice Fishing God, and you'll be all set!!!!
Gus
P.S. Anyone out there around the Lowell area had any experience
with the local Ice Fishing tournaments that seem to be around
every weekend in the winter ??

| I entered my first ice fishing tourney last year at lake mascuppic
in Tyngsboro (sp?). I only caught 1 pickerel but it was enough
to really turn me on to the sport. I went on to catch quite a few
fish last winter. I fished Silver lake Wilmington (recently stocked
with Pike), Beaver lake Derry (trout, bass, picks), and a great
pond in Acton (name) with big brown trout (4 lbs+). I plan to start
ice fishing as soon as possible.
Does anyone know anything about the size of the fish at the A1 site?
Any big northerns been caught there? Muskie? Bass?
See ya' soon,

Gus I've done the lake view tourny and the crystal lake ones, The
best spot on lake view ( Massacupic for you yuppies) is the dracut
boat launch. Don't look for me. I'll be down by the tyngs boat launch.
And for crstal lak ( Got's some new yuppie name too) in N. Chelmsford
I would say the place for you to fish would be on the west side,
Ya that would be good for you.
So noone has given us real directions on getting to this site out
west, Where is it?
P.S. Can we use depth sounders? How about down riggers?

| re .20
A1 is primarily Bass..I haven't heard of any big Northerns. A1 is
a flood plain for the Assebet. It consists of some 300+ acres, of
which about 3/4 is some of the biggest and nastiest stumps ever
known to mankind...a good many of them right below the surface just
waiting to empty the contents of your tacklebox. There is an old
river bed that runs thru it which is supposed to be good and then
there is one hole that goes to about 15' deep not that far from
the ramp.
I'd suggest that you not only bring an auger but a chainsaw as well.
Good Luck !!

| Re. 20
Last year I read of some large Northerns and moderate tiger
muskies coming out of there. The state has been stocking it with
these fish for several years, long enough to let the northens grow
up to 20lbs and muskie to 10lbs. As for Bass Mooseface and I
put his boat in there only once and put at least a dozen bass in
the boat one morning.
The standing timber may require a chain saw with your auger
but there is enough open water in the 15' depth range to handle
us. Also the river bed that runs through the timber is noticeable
and will probably have some great fishing in it.
Here are some rough direction. It is located behind the site
of the old SPEED WAY, where BJ's is now. Coming from 495 turn left
at the light past BJ's Take that road to the end (ASTRA PHARMACEUTICAL
is on that road) and turn left take the first right and the A-1
Site is on the right you cant miss it. I'll have road name next
week.

I'll have my brother take some air-photos of A1 from his chopper,as

all along the track side of the lake.
Of all the times we fished there, mostly spring and summer....only
one pickerel was caught,on a Dare Devil...suitably named cause using
a spoon in this place is daring, and could become expensive.

| Not to get off the subject of the tourney, but for all those
who have been to the A1 site, how good is the access to A1
for a trailered boat ?? Sounds like an interesting place to
fish BEFORE the ice is in. I don't have a "Metalflake Monster"
but a 16' Bassboat similar to a tracker. Any possibilty of
getting it in at the "ramp". I have a 4WD, so the ramp doesn't
have to be perfect.

P.S. I don't really care if I have to use the Trolling motor
only, but I'd like to bring this boat instead of the
10' Jon boat I would have to use as and alternative.
|
894.29 | Good luck. | FHQ::LANGE | STOP!.....continue... | Fri Oct 14 1988 16:52 | 23 |
| Gus....
A1 is a "Motors' Nightmare"
The ramp is safe for launching, and the area of water on the ramp
side of the island maybe ok for trolling around.
But if you venture past the island in a boat other than a fram, canoe,or
crawdad...you'll spend more time trying to get your boat off of
stumps,than casting...
When I bring the canoe in there,I let my wife just sit back and
let me do the paddling. The stumps above the water are no problem, they
are easily avoided. But the ones just below the surface are scarey.
One person paddling is best because if ya get up some speed and
hit one of those stumps...your heart will skip a beat...I know!
Too often the wind would get the canoe blowing sideways...and that
tiny little keel will just catch a hidden stump, and WHAM...panic
city!...always ALWAYS keep the tackle box locked when you're not
using it. We never went over in there yet...but then again ... this
weekend isn't here yet.
Night fishing is fun there too.. we've been a couple times...

This area is the most picture perfect Bass lake you can imagine.

| Hi All
Sounds like there's pretty good interest here, however, If I may
be so bold, how about considering making this a Catch and release
tournament ??? Given the fact that there are so many people
signed up, and the fact that the A1 site, from what I hear, is not so
big, there's the making of seriously depleting the quantity of good
fish in what appears to be a pretty good fishery.
I realize that catch and release during and Ice fishing tourney
is not as easy as it is in a regular tournament, considering that live
bait and Gut hooking will occur, and the lack of live wells, but
it seems that a little bit of inconvenience for us could save a
few decent fish. Just a thought.
Of course if the results are anything like the Monomac (sp?) tourney
(I am very glad I had to miss that one !!) This discussion is not
applicable !!!!

Re:.56
I agree with the catch and release, but,I do have one
problem known to ice fisherman as "short pickeral".
These little buggers get caught, get thrown back just
to get caught 5 minutes later on the same tilt. Now
that I have just about thrown my game plan to ya I might
as well tell ya that live wells work great in the winter.
Dig yourself a 36"x 20"x 8" well on the ice and break
through so water can fill the "tub".Fish will last all
day in this and CAN be released at the end of the day.
This works great especially when your getting what seems
to be alot of short pickeral. They will empty your bait
bucket in no time at all.I keep the shorts in the well and then
I realize that 4 or 5 small pickeral have been setting
off the FLAGS! The action will slow, but, would you rather
catch 1 LARGE fish and some small ones or be stripped of
bait all day and catch 12" pickeral that could be used
for bait??? I would rather win the tourney than catch small
pain in the beep pickeral.

Except for last year I have ice fished for the last 5 between Christmas

If the ice is not thick enough we will postpone it a couple of weeks

A meeting was held last night with the "Clan" and we have all agreed
that most of your commentary regarding Ice Fishing is accurate.
Now I guess, we have to lower ourselves to beg your forgiveness
and ask a few questions before it gets too late:
. Can anyone recommend a good axe to buy?
. Would my l8" blade Chain Saw be the way to go?
. What kind of flies or lures should we purchase?
. Is there any preference to Male or Female shinners?
. What kind of beer goes best while we are sinking on 2" of ice?
. Mrs. Lange wants to know if there is going to be a porta-potty
set up on the ice, or should she just make yellow ice?
. Can we put this on our time cards?

To answer the CLANS questions:
. Can anyone recommend a good axe to buy?
Any will do but unlike tackle boxes they should
NOT be worm~~~ proof.
. Would my l8" blade Chain Saw be the way to go?
YES!! Since you ain't gonna make any money fishing
you might as well chop down some of that standing timber
at the A-1 and sell it for fire wood.
. What kind of flies or lures should we purchase?
Buy one of everything, you wouldn't want to be out there
and not have what they are hittin' on, do ya?
. Is there any preference to Male or Female shinners?
Females of course, in heat.
. What kind of beer goes best while we are sinking on 2" of ice?
Free coooooold beers! They are always the best.
. Mrs. Lange wants to know if there is going to be a porta-potty
set up on the ice, or should she just make yellow ice?
Hey The ice is going to be thin enough, we dont need
anyone melting it. Of course you could always Pool your
clans resource and cut out an island for your self.
. Can we put this on our time cards?
Of Course, BTW whats your bosses name again?
Any and All questions can be answered just ask "Mr. ICE"

geez...for a moment there I thought this guy knew all about my wife, but
maybe there's someone else out there with the same problem as me...
FISHING + WIFE = TROUBLE
if you expand the equation a bit, it means...
FISHING: "Hey, Hon...I think I'm gonna go out fishing tonite. OK?"
WIFE: "Whaddaya mean you're going out fishing all nite?!?"
TROUBLE: "Oh yeah...over my dead body!"

Hey, Jeff....I wish that was MY problem!
Les... I dunno about the 7th. I've got to think real hard about whether I
want to be seen with you clowns out on the ice. It could damage my

I neglected to say that Gerry (Perch Head) McCook is a DEC employee

Mr. & Mrs. Clan checked out the A-1 Site the other day for the first

after (Swiss Cheese). Is everyone planning to fish the open waters,
or will there be people fishing in the liquid forest? We found
several areas that she will be able to make yellow snow.

my wet suit s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-s ... it's been a few years since I wore it. I
guess I better use my chicken vest seeing as the water will be a tad chilly.
Maybe I'll bring along my spear gun and shoot a lunker. The highest bidder
will get it hooked to his line. Just ignore the puncture marks and forget
about "catch 'n release."
Humm... I could just image the mass confusion if I tied a few lines together

| I've been going to A1 for the past two years ...
In another year or two,...there will be good fishing there...I've seen
a few nice ones...and heard of more...but they're few and far
between...Mostly the norm size are shorts to 14",15" running between
1 to 2 lbs...bass that is... And in another year or two there will be
an abundance of 3,and 4 lbers.
Most of the water around the bushes there, at it's very deepest, is
maybe 3'...I myself like to fish the bushes, and crash buzz baits, and
Moss Boss's. Cast them as hard as you can straight into bushes to get
the lure to the water....then dip it in and out of the water. Bass
there take cover in the bushes to get away from the sun...out in
"tree, snd stump ville"....there isn't much shade except for the massive
weed beds found mostly under and around the tree's where the Herron
live, and you you need about to oz jig head to get your worm down
in there....There are some small lilly islands, mostly in the way back
cove where the stream feeds the place. some spots out there are between
ten,and 15' deep...I only know this from my anchor rope....I've never
been out there with a Hummingbird or anything YET...this spring I'll be
charting the entire place.
This past fall I did stumble on what appears to be a spawning ground in
about 3' to 3' of water....beds as big a'round as a car tire all
taking up an area the the size of a supermarket....I'll be throwing
everything fro soup to nuts there this spring.
In the two years I've been going there...the first time I was there not
knowing the danger of casting a non-weedless spoon(DareDevil) I think
by accident, caught a pickerell the size of a hammer handel....and that
is the only time I ever saw, caught,or heard of anything caught other
than a bass.
So if there are the infamous pike/muskie there...maybe they only are
active during the cold months...I hope this tourney won't be a
disappointment for the 60?+ that are going to show up....

| I called the Fish & Game people today to get some details on the
A-1 Site. They said stocking of Pike and Tiger Muskie has been
going on since 1982, this is what they put in.
1982 - 1200 Pike & Tiger Muskie (the Tiger Muskie were
on the small side)
1986 - 200 Pike 300 Tiger Muskie, All should be in the
30 inch or better range by now.
1988 - 400 Pike These will not be legal size this year.
They claim to have reports of good PIKE coming out of there through
the ice but couldn't give any details. He said lure fishing in
the summer is bad for these spieces due to the fact of the large
shiner and white perch population. He said the top PIKE waters
in this area are Whitehall Res. , A-1 Site, Cochituate, Quinsigamond,
and the best in the state is QUABOAG.

Northern Pike and Tiger Muskie in A1 ? I have fished there a few
times and the most prevelant species by far is Bass. I can only
remember a couple of Pickrel in the last 5 years. A1 can give up
some large bass though, usually in early spring (more like late
winter). This past spring my partner got a 5.25 lb'r. In general
the fishing there has not been as good as past years.
Sooooo... Who do we let hold our entry investment til payoff's?
Will 5 inches of ice be enough to drive a 44' motor home out on?
Is 4 keg's of beer enough? or should I bring an extra 6 pack?

I will be there around 6:30 to start checking people in. Once
you have checked in you can go out and start drilling your holes,
but no traps in the water with set flags before the gun at 7:30.
What I have done at other ice tournys is bait up the hook and set
the bait up near the surface of the ice, leave the trap out of the
water with the flag up, then when the gun goes off run around like
a mad mad getting them in the water.
I will be heading out ther next week to check out the fishing.

| Hey Bill Dance,
I checked out the A-1 Site today. They were fishing on it but
thewind was blowing real hard on to the shore by the ramp. With
the warm air water was blowing in and the ice was only about 3"
on shore the water out farther was 4-5" thick it is soppose to get
cold so I am sure it will be O.K. It was good solid black ice so
I am sure it will be fine for the tourny ( barring warm fronts).
According to Dick Albert the ice safety goes like this. All you
pro ice walkers out there tell me if you agree.
3" safe for a man to walk on
4" safe for a group of men walking in a line
5" safe for a group of men in a group
8-10" safe for a car to drive on.
BTW: Worcester opens all the city ponds for skating after there
is 4" of ice across the ponds.
Bill if it gets cold tomorrow and tonite lets meet at the A-1 at
8:00 a.M. Friday. Any other takers??

| FIRST ANNUAL NOTERS ICE FISHING TOURNAMENT
This is going to be GREAT!!!!!!! I will be at the ramp on Mill St.
with the Gitzit' between 6:00 A.M. and 6:30 A.M. We will be sitting on the
back of a Red Nissan 4X4 truck signing people up. Once you have signed up
go out and claim your spot, NO FISHING TILL THE GUN. I will have the scales
set up on the lake all day. Ken Kulp will be the official official to weigh
in your catch and record it.
At 7:30 I am going out on the ice to fish, so if you arrive late look
for a tripod set up with an American Flag on it, that will be the scales.
Come on over and sign up. We dont want anyone signing up with a 5Lb bass
at 3:00 P.M. Between 3:00 and 3:30 lets meet at the ramp/parking lot and
award the prizes. Hopefully everyone would have weighed in there fish by
then.
GOOD LUCK!!!!
PLEASE SUPPORT CATCH AND RELEASE!!
Here are some directions to the lake. SEE YOU SATURDAY

Ahyup...that's what the weather man sez...
NOW...if it is raining or inclement, it will be interesting to see just how
many of these LOUD-MOUTHS will actually show up. TBDW WIMPS OUT in the
summer time when it rains....he's bound to stay home in the winter. How
many of you will end up joining him??
FWIW...over the last couple of years whenever Fletcher and I go ice fishing,
it ALWAYS manages to rain or snow. We've been out there in raging
nor'easters, pouring rain, sleet, and wind. Yea, I know, we're fools. But
at least NO ONE can ever say that the weather stopped Ole HSJ! The wife
maybe....but never the weather!
No folks, HSJ will not be heading down from God's Country to fish this
fiasco. Judging from all the comments in the preceding replies, there's
gonna be a lot of drunken fools out there that will constantly tripping over
ice traps, stealing bait & equipment, and creating considerable noise
pollution (not to mention yellow ice pollution)! HSJ goes out to enjoy the
peace and quiet of the great outdoors. If I want noise pollution, I saty
home with the wife and 3 kids!
In any event, good luck, stay dry, and HAVE FUN!!

| FIRST ANNUAL NOTERS ICE FISHING TOURNAMENT
FINAL RESULTS
Well The weather held and the Ice tournament was a big success!!
72 registered and lots of fish were pulled through the ice. The winners
were,
CRAIG BELONGIE 4 lb. 7 oz. Largemouth Bass
TIM BLASER 2 lb. 11 oz. Pickerel
Congratulations for two real nice fish and a great effort. Both
winners are from the Shrewsbury plant.
Unfortunately no legal sized PIKE or TIGER MUSKIE came trough the ice.
People began showing up to stake out the territory on the ice by 5:15 A.M.,
by 7 everyone was there chopping away. Ken "CRASH" Kulp and John "HAWK"
Swenson were the OFFICIAL officials, weighing in the catches throughout the
day, Nice job guys. We had 14 bass come to the scales in the first hour and
a half. Craig showed up with the 4Lb + Bass real early, the word got out fast
and most people were just throwing back the one and two pounders waiting for
the big HAWG, but nobody was able to top him through out the day. Tim Blasers
very first flag produced the large PICKEREL, I got to see it come through the
ice, it was around 7:50.
Ken and John ended up weighing in 29 lb. 8 oz. of BASS, and 6 lb. of
PICKEREL. A lot more Bass came through like I mentioned, about a dozen or more
PIKE came through the ice with the biggest, I heard of, being 25", and I only
heard of 2 short TIGER MUSKIE being caught.
Other HONORABLE MENTIONS go out to:
Greg Sasseville 3 Lb. 13 oz. BASS
Dan Surrette 3 Lb. 8 oz. BASS & 2 Lb. 10 oz. bass
Denise Griffin 3 Lb. 3 oz. BASS
BEST EFFORT GOES OUT TO:
EVA PIERCESAW, for running all the way across the lake cause there were
two, count'em two flags up, husband Ken, was busy socializing during this.
When she got to the flags the first one produce zippo, but the second one had
a fish on, Eva was dancing around the hole as the fish was giving her a good
fight. Then the chanting of "PULL PULL PULL PULL PULL PULL" started on the
lake, Eva yanked out a 22" PIKE, but what a fight it was, NICE JOB!!!
Jeff Lange showed up but did not fish he was the official Photographer,
The KEG must of been real black and blue after all the spills he took racing
for the flags and getting tackled during the foot ball game. Hey KEG want some
BEN-GAY??? :>) And the infamous TBDW showed up grabbed a beer and left,
maybe next time he will stay and drink it with us.
ALL in ALL a good time was had by all and a lot of fish were caught in
the morning, the afternoon was slow, but two guys walked away with a nice BOOTY.
SEE YOU NEXT YEAR

Ed,
All but one bass that was weighed it went right back in the water
via a hole next to the scales. Same with the pickerel. I only
heard of two bass being kept out of at least 50+ being caught.
So all in all CATCH AND RELEASE was the method used.
Les
BTW; Why don't we list our catch at the tourney since most did
not come to the scales after 10:00 AM
Mine, 2 pickerel 1 Bass all keepers.

More Kudos to Les. I don't think the Tourney could have been run
any better, and Everyone seemed to ahve a great time. The three
of us (Gus Surrette, Dan Surrette, and Steve Stokes) caught either
8 or 9 Bass (weighed in 2 : 3 lb 8 oz, and 2 lb. 10oz. ) and one
20 " Pike, the remaining bass were mixed keepers and shorts, all
of them released.
We also had the ... Er .. a.... ?Pleasure ? of fishing next to
the Clan. They seemed to start off rather noisy, but then it seemed
to get somewhat quiet over there, I really can't say why though.:-)
Again, an excellent tourney. The A1 site seems to be a premier
fishing hole, lets hope it stays that way !!
Gus
P.S. Did ya notice how in the morning when there were numerous
flags flying things seemed pretty quiet around the ice, but boy
did things pick up when the beer took effect and the flags slowed.
Then the comic relief started !!!!!!

While you folks were walking on water, a guy on an ATV and a dog

Pittsfield last weekend. Both made it to shore with a little help.

I have to say that I had a great time and give Rich
credit on that great open field tackle he made on me
on the way to that flag which by the way was an 18"
Northern.I would like to thank the group next to us
that probably called 2/3rds of our flags all day,ewe
know who ewe are cause ewe were so amazed at how many
flags we got ewe asked us what we were using for bait!!!
And to the person askin if the KEG needs Ben-Gay I will
say no!! I went out the very next day.
Bye the Bye I went to Lake Cochituate and an 18 1/2 pound
Northern was taken Saturday where yours truly usually
fishes.

Well Les, in conjunction with everyone elses thoughts, we want to
thank you for putting on an excellent tournament. It was indeed,
a lot of fun.
For all those "Clan Fans" who have been anxiously awaiting some
small comentary about the clan's results, here they are::
3 - Bass were caught and released. All three were small in size
and deserved another chance. The clan was totally embarrased by
its showing on the ice. Yes, the clan was quiet at the end, because
we were too busy looking for one of the God Children, he was the
one doing l6 oz. arm curls with other weight lifters of sorts.
The godmother had one great time. She is definately a good sport.
Thanks again, Les. We had a good time.

Les I am sure I speak for Dennis and Denise in thanking you for
a great tournament. Although we managed only 2 fish through the
ice all day they were both first's. I got my first Tiger Muskie
19" and Denise got her first Bass ever, first time fishing 3.3 lbs.
Neither was the biggest...but I think we were in the running for
the biggest fire.
...Ah what the h**l.. He does'nt read this file anyway...
There was one other first... Dennis got skunked
* Eric * Drop me a line when you get that picture developed.. Thanks
Thanks again Les...

five inches of ice. Maybe they measured after all those 16oz curls!

Talked last week to a man who couldn't remember the name of
a lake that he fished, but described its' location like Chauncy.
He hadn't been there for a couple of years but told of some big
bass that he pulled out during the summer. Never been on it
myself.....but let us know if there is some ice there.....got
to do something until things thaw.

I was at A1 for the am on 2/19. We got set up at 6:30 and left at
noon. We didn't catch any hawgs but with 10 tilts got 9 Bass and
a Spike (Small Pike). You can tell who we are cause I usally have
my dog Sam there with us, he is a big Lab and Golden retriever mix.
When I was at the bait shop I saw a picture of Tiger Muskie
caught out of Big Chauncy on Saturday Night 2/18 8.9 pounds ...
Nice Fish.
Although this was a good day we had one better about a month
ago. We thought there wasn't any ice any where and so we were out
scouting some spots for the canoe come spring. I like to get
topo maps and find mudholes that can not bee seen from the road
or have no road access. We found a spot that was a dammed stream
and on the side of the moving water there was 6-8 inches of ice.
We went home got the tilts and were set up by 3pm. From 3 to 6 pm
we got 6 Bass...(2) 3 lbs, (2) 2 1/2 lbs and (1) 2 lbs and
(1) 1 1/2 lbs. We have decided it worth taking the canoe back in
the spring ( we know there are at least 6 Bass in there ). This
is not he first time we have had good luck at no access mudholes
there is another near where I live were we have got 3-5 lb bass.
Did not mean to get too long winded.. can you tell I like to fish.
This is the first weekend in a while I did not get out to fish.
Was there any ice on A1? Did you catch anything? I am leaving for
the west coast Sunday and won't be back till 3/14. i would like
to get out ice fishing one more time.. Friday afternoon maybe..
does any one know of a goo place to fish north / west of Marlboro
that has good ice and good fishing ? I would be willing to fill
you in on one of my mudholes for a good tip.
