882.0. "lake champlain future???" by BTO::LEVESQUE_R () Thu Sep 29 1988 17:23

    I was wondering as to the status of the lamprey control in Lake
    champlain, and the new fish hatchery. Also I was wondering if anyone
    has started to pick up salmon or lakers near the surface of the water
    yet. The last I knew the state was having hearings on both issues.

    or the lamprey program?
882.2Lamprey control....BTOVT::MORONGWed Aug 16 1989 13:3523
      For those who hadn't heard, some of Vermonts lawmakers (Senators,
    Representatives, ect....) and legislators wanted to get a first hand
    experience on the Lamprey problems plaguing Lake Champlain, so they
    asked some of the local charter captains to take them out. They cer-
    tainly got to see what they wanted. Of the 8 lake trout caught by the
    group, 4 of them had lampreys attached to them.

      "Two of the three we caught in our boat had lampreys," US Senator
    James Jeffords said. "I knew it was a problem, but I had no idea it
    was so bad."

      Officials in Vermont and New York state plan next year to begin
    spraying chemicals on 14 deltas and streams that flow into the lake
    to kill lampreys before they hatch. Apparently the lamprey go upstream
    to spawn, so the idea sounds good. We definetly a lamprey control pro-
    gram.

      I am in favor of the spraying. I'm sure that enough research went into
    the application and use of these chemicals, and their effects on the
    enviroment, to make this type of project safe.

    Maybe you folks can explain to me what a lamprey is.

    I'm sure the one that I am picturing is not the one that you
    are talking about.

    curious.

 A lamprey is a nasty old fish with a round, flat mouth that attaches itself
onto a salmon or lake trout and sustains its life by using the host as
its food source. When the host dies, it finds another host.
