870.0. "White Mountains Trout Trip" by 16BITS::LUCIA () Tue Sep 06 1988 11:53

    Hi Folks:

I would like to plan a trout fishing/camping trip to the white
mountains this fall. I would like information on where to fish,
what to fish with and where I might camp (tent in the woods is fine
with me). Are there too many sight-seers during the foliage season?
I thought it might be nice to go then, the water should be cool
enough to fish. Also, directions to places would be helpful.

    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

One place I have tried before which worked out well is the Amonoosuc
River. The place I fished it was around Littleton, NH. I caught
4 trout: 2 rainbows, 2 brookies. Only 1 of the fish was a native
fish, the rest had been stocked. I caught them on worms with just
enough split shot to get them down a bit. I drifted them. This was
on July 4th a couple of years ago. Fortunately, there is a road
that sort of follows the river; just get a map and look around
Littleton. There is alot of wildlife around there, too. There are
campsites scattered around the area, but it may be more difficult
to find a spot during foliage season.

Another good spot is the Saco river around North Conway. The fishing
is good there also. It is a much better river to flyfish due to
its larger size. I'm not sure where to camp around here but there
must be alot of places if you look hard enough.

The Conn. Lakes area is abit further than the White Mountain Ntl
Forest, but you'd probably find more fish and less leaf peepers,
and maybe a few moose, bear, etc...
