866.0. "Results from the "BIG O"" by SALEM::PAPPALARDO () Tue Aug 30 1988 12:27

Well I just got back from the "BIG O", and did we have have one
hell of a trip. We were on the lake for 3 days 22,23,24 on "TOP
LINE Charters" out of Point Breeze, New York. Our total for the
    3 days was 31 fish, 5 Coho's, 1 Laker, 8 Steelheads, and 17 Kings.
The largest Coho was 12lb Male, Steelhead 13lb, and the King 30lbs,
while we out on the second day a King was caught that took the ESLO
derby lead at 36lbs 9oz. But alas I'm back at work only to have
the memories and pictures of our trip, by the way I should get my
30 pounder back from the taxidermist around Febuary.

How did you like Top Line? What is their daily rate?
866.2SALEM::PAPPALARDOTue Aug 30 1988 13:4610
Until the end of the season the rate is $300 for 8 hours and your
guaranteed fish. This is the second time i've gone out with them,
last years rate was $225 and from what he told us next years will
be $330-340. They also attend the sports show in the Worcester,
and the Hawg show in Manchester,N.H.. They have a total of 4 boats
in there fleet and are in constant conversation with each other.
The cost increases are due to the economy and the pressure of the
other charters, the most expensive one we saw was $550 a day.

That's about what I expected. The usual problem with these trips
is rounding up two more people who can definitely go and split the
cost. That tends to be a problem after Labor Day...

    Anyway...thanks for the info...
866.4what's working over there?HOZZER::MARTYTue Aug 30 1988 15:0613
Sounds like it was a great trip Guy! I'm heading over tomorrow for
a week and the news really got me excited (like I haven't been
anyway!). What part of the lake is the point breeze area near? I'm
not doing a charter this year so would be real interested in hearing
any details of what was working and the areas the charters were
working. My tenative plans are to camp somewhere around the Pulaski
area, but they could be modified real easy. I heard a couple of
weeks ago that the fishing was best out over 400-500 ft of water
trolling around 100ft down. I s this still the case. thanks for
    any info.

When I got there on 8/21 Sunday just about everyone got blown off
the lake 6ft. waves and the wind was coming in from the NE which
brought all the cold water close to shore. We fished about 1/4 to
1/2 mile off shore in 30ft of water with the downriggers set from
8 to 16ft of water. The most productive was a black program which
equates to a black cannonball and a black spoon with glow tape.
They also used all 3 days "Dipsy Divers" in the chrome finish with
either a chrome J plug,Orange & Yellow J plug (The BIG HORNY males
attack that one), or chrome with pink tape J plug. We also used
squids with dodgers the most productive squid was green & white.
As the weather got better we went out to 60-175, @60 we trolled
40-50, and @175 we trolled 140-145. The last day we found a rip
(when 2 different temps meet it causes what looks like a road across
the water and everything collects on top) @475ft and we trolled
16-45ft down. The spoons we were using were called MK Magnums, most
tackle shops carry them out there. Point Breeze is 35-40 miles West
of Rochester, and the Bed & Breakfast we stayed at was in Waterport,
3 miles and 5 minutes away from our charter @$19 per night/person.

I'm surprised that you were that far west on the lake. I always
thought that the fish moved into the eastern waters towards the
end of summer. Is there a hatchery on the west end of the lake also,
or some streams that the salmon reproduce naturaly in?

The info you provided was really great Guy. Could the MK Magnums
you were speaking of be NK instead of MK. I just picked up some
black spoons called NK 28s...I wonder if these are similar. I also
droped another 30$ on J Plugs a couple of nights ago so should be
set in this department. The place I buy my tackle at has a sale
on Tiger plugs. They look almost identical to J plugs. Has anyone
had any experience with these? He's selling them for 2$ a piece.
Compared to 4.50-5.50 for J plugs it's a pretty good price.

It could be NK instead of MK, I believe the package was red and
white and the numeral was 28. The J plug was a tiger style/color
Yellow,Orange,Black and it also rattled. Point Breeze harbor is
Oak Orchard Creek which flows down from a dam and the salmon go
up to it. We went down by that area and saw the "Snagging" places
that are set up, parking areas, places that clean your fish, buy the
eggs from the females, and some even offered smoking.

I just got back and the fish were in 85' of water trolling
at 55'. It is NK-28 and the black purple and black green seemed
to be the ones that the kings are hitting.
                                             GOOD LUCK

866.10more results...HOZZER::MARTYWed Sep 07 1988 10:308
We had to cut our trip short due to the weather, but our 3 day total
was 10 kings, 1 coho and 2 laketrout, one being 13lbs. The biggest
king went about 26lbs. We had a fantastic time! I'd say we lost
twice as many as we got into the boat. Can't wait to go back...(weekend
    after next).
