847.0. "Rainbows in August!" by WILVAX::MERRILL () Mon Aug 15 1988 13:50

    Has anyone been catching any trout this summer? I have taken twenty
    rainbows over the past week. I caught them at Otter Brook, which
    is in Keene N.H.. Caught 12 last Sunday (releasing all because
    I had no cooler to take them home to Windham), and caught 8 yesterday
    (took 6 home to eat). These are all nice fish averaging between 12"-
    14", largest being 16".

    If you're like me, and catch a few trout in the Spring and that's
    it 'til next year, you can appreciate my delight in finding such
    a great hole.

    The dozen trout I caught a week ago, I used only one lure. It was
    a 1/16 oz gold Panther Martin spinner. Yesterday they were a little
    too wise for that and I used a wide variety of baits:

    2 on worms
    1 on salmon egg
    1 on mepps helix spinner
    1 on a cabelas skin head jig
    2 on grasshoppers (got the idea from seeing them get nailed at the
    surface).
    1 on a white roostertail.

    Now, I've let you all in on a great hotspot. Can any of you trout
    fisherman let me in on any other places I could get some summer
    trout (MASS OR NH)?

847.2TROUT FISHING IS AS GOOD AS ANY FISHINGSCOMAN::SKALSKITue Aug 16 1988 12:3410

    		You may want to try Singletary pond in Millbury, I was
    	catching a half dozen each time out earlier this season. Last
    	few times out however, didn't net any rainbows. I'm gonna wait
    	until weather cools and trout come back up. Not a bad spot
    	if you have a boat with downrigger and some lead core lines.
    	The rainbows were averaging around 14" or so, but like I said
    	no trout last few times out. Bass are still abundant!

    the rainbow's seem to be quite deep this part of the yr.
    the cooler weather is coming, and so will the fish.
847.4Hot Hole!WILVAX::MERRILLWed Aug 17 1988 09:537
    The place I caught all my trout is right at the Otter Brook Dam.
     You can see signs for the dam off of route 101 (Marlborough,or
     Keene). Fish below the dam and cast into the turbulent water below
     the waterfall, and you will not fail.

    Good luck,
          Bill
847.5Dams, Cool Tributaries, and Springs Best BetCIMAMT::DOWNINGWed Aug 17 1988 10:2310
    Thanks...I wish I could reciprocate by letting you in on a hotspot
    for trout in August, but I usually stash my rod this month due to
    slow fishing...I'm sure that any tailrace below a dam in either
    Mass or NH is a good bet, but not all of them are going to be cool
    enough to hold fish...if I had time to run around with a stream
    thermometer, that would be the way to locate them (as well as spring
    holes)...most of the
    dog day hot spots I know of are in Northern Maine where I do most
    of my fishing, but I assume you aren't interested in driving for 4
    plus hours...
847.6Where in Maine?WILVAX::MERRILLWed Aug 17 1988 11:185
    Just for the hell of it, what areas of Maine do you fish? I spend
    quite a few weekends in the Damariscotta area (Just north of Boothbay
    . I usually stick to salt water fishing (mackerel, blues) while
    I am there, but if I could find a trout stream in the area I'd love
    to give it a try.
847.7Dog Day Spots in MaineCIMAMT::DOWNINGWed Aug 17 1988 12:4040
    Well go north another 2-3 hrs and that's where the fishing is anywhere
    from fair to good in August. Most of them are dam outlets or falls. Ones
    that have produced for me:

    1. Seboomook dam on tHe West Branch of Penobscot.

    2. Nesowadnehunk Falls, again on West Branch.

    3. Abol Falls, again on West Branch.

    4. Matagamon Dam at East Branch Penobscot outlet on Grand Lake
    Matagamon.

    5. Roach River outlet dam at First Roach Pond (Kokadjo). Fish at
    night for best results.

    6. Brassua Dam at Moose River outlet from Brassua Lake in Rockwood.

    7. Kennebec River just above THE FORKS near confluence of Dead River.

    8. Kennebec River above and below the bridge in Solon (good brown
    trout fishing at night).

    If I had to pick a consistent producer throughout the summer, it
    would be the West Branch at Nesowadnehunk falls. Best with live
    bait, but I think the laws change to artificial lures only by now
    (check the book).

    None of these are fast fishing this time of year, but you can usually
    catch something.

    Closer to where you are, I've heard rumors that the St. George River
    is a good August brown trout producer below dams and falls in the
    evening although I have little personal experience. Damariscotta
    Lake is a GREAT ice fishing spot (i've caught some nifty togue there)
    but I don't know how it fares in August (probably have to troll
    deep). Nequasset Lake (which is right near you in Woolwich) is worth
    a shot for rainbows.

    How's that?

My partner and I caught 6 Rainbows at Ft Pond Sunday Aug 7th. They were
rising all over.

Two years ago, we caught trout in every month from March to December,
including a Sunday in August when there were at least a dozen speed boats
buzzing around. (Must be over-stocked ;')

       Where were they hitting in Fort Pond? What bait? Were you
     trolling? Thanx.

We were hittin 'em all over. Using Davis spinners. We had one Davis on a
down-rigger about 20' down the other just trailing about 30' off the back
of the boat. They were hittin both the deep davis and the top davis.
Had flies off the davis.

       Rte 2 West from littleton, take the Lunenburg exit. The boat
    ramp is right nearby, if it's not too windy tommorrow I'll be out
    there. Look for the green Jon boat w/electric motor.

847.13WHERE THE TROUT'S IS !!!!!SALEM::JUNGFri Aug 19 1988 09:583
    GENERALLY SPEAKING THE TROUT ARE IN OR NEAR THE THERMOCLINE. THIS
    IS THE FISHY SECTION OF THE LAKE. USUALLY 10-20 FEET DOWN IN MOST
    MEDIUM SIZE LAKES, DEEPER IN LARGER LAKES. A GOOD STARTING POINT
847.14Peter's PondCIMAMT::DOWNINGFri Aug 19 1988 15:2720
    Another good dog day spot for rainbows in Massachusetts is Peter's
    Pond in Sandwich (or Mashpee?) on the Cape. Most Cape kettlehole
    ponds are spring fed and tend to stay fairly cool. Peter's is stocked
    heavily and fished heavily; it also has an excellent boat ramp which
    is rarely crowded and has plenty of parking.

    Put in at the ramp and motor across the pond to just offshore fro
    m the big sand pile in the gravel yard. There's a good size drop
    off here where the trout hang out. Best summer bait for me has been
    live grass shrimp, which are hard to find (think you can still get
    them at Mike's Bait in Kingston or a tackle store in Wareham). Fish
    them on the bottom with as little weight as possible. Even better
    if you chum first (on the bottom), but shrimp ain't cheap.

    Next best baits I've found are, in order of pref., salmon eggs,
    mini-marshmallows, and niblet corn.

    If this doesn't work, I try trolling with lead core (3-4 colors)
    but usually wind up catching perch in August. I do have a small downrigger
    for a canoe; maybe I'll use it to get down deeper.

    Could you give me a general idea where Peter's Pond is, we'll be
    in that area this weekend and would like to do some fishing.

    This is off the top of my head, so you should probably doublecheck
    with someone when you're down there.

    Take Rte. 6 over the Sagamore Bridge to the Rte. 130 south exit
    heading towards Cotuit. About a mile or so down the road there is
    a major left hand turn off, I believe there is a sign for Cotuit
    and also one for Peter's Pond Park (a campground); I don't know
    the name of the road. Take this left and proceed another 2-3 miles
    past a shopping mall until you see John Ewer Rd. on the right (easy
    to miss and I'm not sure about the spelling). Take this right and
    go about a half mile (the road is bumpy and potholey); you'll see
    the obvious boat ramp and parking
    lot on the right.

    Hope you find it. Tell me how you do!
