I do not have all the facts.......

I will try to get the figures but

A new World Record Brown Trout was caught....
It weighted 38 pds and something......

I don't remember exactly but I believe it was caught in Missouri
or Arkansaw in a large lake. I read the story a couple of weeks
ago in a fishing paper. again if memory serves me correct (and it
always doesn't ) he caught it on EIGHT pound test. i'm sure somebody
else has read the story and has all the details.

             ARKASAS FISHERMAN BAGS RECORD TROUT
( the following is coppied with out permission )

North Little Rock Ark. ( AP ) -It was around midnight when
Mike Manley roused the sleeping fishing guide who lives near
the North Fork River. Manley suspected the brown trout he had
just caught was no ordinary fish, and he needed some expert
advice.
A short time later surrounded by witnesses the certified
scale at Harp's Super Store at Mountain Home confirmed that
Manley, 26,, of North Little Rock had captured a world record
brown trout.
The 38 pound 9 ounce fish had approached the McClennn's
boat dock in Baxter county seven times fought away its way out
again before manley got a good look at it.
I saw the fish in the lantern light. It was hanging
about a foot out of the net and was bending it all over the
place," he said monday.
Maney's friend. Tommy Long was standing in water that
was about two feet deep, trying to net the fish, according to
Manley. When I saw that fish , I just jumped into the water to
help him."
I thought it might be a state record, but I never
dreamed it was a world record," Manley said
`Manleys, long and a third friend Paul Suddeth were
looking for something to do after Manley fished his Dairy
delivery route Aug 6 . They chose fishing over hunting frogs and
pitched a tent near the dock on the North Fork River, a short
way down stream from the Lake Nortfork Dam.
It was the third cast when the line just started reeling
out. The drag was set pretty tight, but the fish took line
pretty fast, said Manley.
Manley doesn't know how long it took him to catch the
fish but says he smoked two cigarettes durring the battle.

The Fish was 39 inches long and had a girth of 27 3/4
inches according Jim Lowe of the state Game Commission. Lowe
said the fish, a male between 15 and 20 years old, was weighted
and certified by Mike Oliver of Cotter district fisheries
biologist for the Game and Fish Commission.
The International Game and Fish Association lists the
previous reccord brown trout at 35 pounds and 15 ounces. It was
caught in Argentina in 1952 according to Jim Lowe of the state
Game and Fish commission.
Manley was using corn and marshmallows on a number 8
treble hook, Lowe said. He was fishing with a five foot ultra
light rod and reel and six pound test line.
The Arkasas record for Brown Trout was 33 pounds 8
ounces caught in the White River in 1977, Lowe said.
"What accounts for the size very simply is that the
White River and that little jog ( of the North Fork) is just
a superb trout river," Lowe said.
He said that the Commission puts more than a million
trout a year into the area. ' When more are put in than taken
out it gives them a chance to grow." He said.
`The best thing about all this is the trout fishermen
who are calling to congrdulate me. My phones just ringing off
the wall said Manley.

I find this story some what bizzare.
However it is entertaining and would welcome any comments
are any updates that might along in the months ahead.

I wonder if this is really true. Remember Sid Finch in S.I.?

846.5TALK ABOUT A FISH STORY!!!PHILEM::VACHONMon Aug 15 1988 17:368
38 pound trout!! holy mackerel... I remember when I got all excited
when I cought my 4 pound small mouth bass. If I ever caught a 38
pound fish I would have to change my underwear afterwards! I don't
think that I would have taken time out to smoke a couple of cigarettes
but I sure would of smoked a carton after I got that sucker in.

of corn he found on the ground along with his wife yelling!!!
get up here get up here it's late at night and its time for bed,
so he threw that last mellow out with the gringy piece of corn
when all hell broke loose. and he lived happily ever after.

I read in the Q & A section of Fishing magazine that this 38+ pounder
was denied recognition as a world record by the International Game
Fish Association because it was caught with live bait and a treble
hook. Seems the rules state that with live bait you cannot use
a treble hook, has to be a single shank. You gents were saying
that a world record fish meant you didn't have to work anymore because
of the endorsements....guess this guys back at the dairy today.

846.10New VT State record Brown troutBTOVT::MORONGThu Aug 23 1990 14:1725
Speaking of record breaking Brown Trout, the Vt state record was
broken the other day. There is a write-up on this (complete with
picture) in today's Burlington Free Press.

It was 33-1/4" long, with a 22-1/2" grith, and weighed in at
22lb-3oz!!!! That shatters the old Vt record by almost 7lbs (15lb-8oz).
One of the most amazing parts of this story is that the fish wasn't
weighed in until the next day. Considering that it is estimated that
a fish will lose 10% of its weight due to dehydration in 24hrs, this
is even more impressive. That would have been a 25lb'er.

The angler caught it on a rebel (no mention of what type/size) while
casting from shore at the inlet to the reservoir. BTW, it was caught
in the Sherman Reservoir, which is in Southern Vermont, and it
straddles the Mass-Vt border. It took him 30-45 minutes to land the
fish. He wasn't going to report it, because he was "uninterested in
any publicity from his catch". Apparently some people caught wind of
the story and persuaded him to report it.

The fish is being mounted, free of charge, at LaBlue's Taxidermy in
Adams, Mass. As part of the agreement, for the next year it will be
    on display at LaBlue's.
