Thinking of fishing the salmon run up the rivers on the east shore of Lake Ontario around the Sept. 3-6 timeframe. I've done this before and am already familiar with the circus conditions up there. However, the Sandy and South Sandy Creeks seemed to have a lot less fishing pressure. I will probably avoid the Salmon River altogether. My questions are: 1. Are the salmon running on Sandy/South Sandy in this timeframe? What are the most likely holding spots? 2. Are there any other lightly-fished streams (relatively speaking) that are worth hitting (I'm willing to drive a distance to get to them)?

a couple of other rivers come to mind in that area. one is the Grindstone Creek which is only a few miles away from the salmon river. the other is the Black River which is quite a distance from the Salmon. It is right outside Watertown, N.Y. It does get it's share of pressure,but i believe the run is early there.

I just got back this week and the rivers and creeks are real low,because of this the salmon are still out in 85' of water and unless they get some good rain it will be later before the salmon head in.Last week the fishing was great,caught 22 kings and 1 coho in 4 days GOOD LUCK Bob
838.3 | TOO EARLY---STAY IN THE LAKE!!! | USRCV1::FRASCH | Thu Sep 01 1988 17:00 | 10
Ususally the Salmon ar not in the river this early. They will stay out in the lake and feed until about the 15th of Sep. If your going this early, suggest you have some means to fish varied depths off shore. Once in the rivers, they usually don't feed at all. Some will as they come in, but once they get serious about spawning, the feeding is over. If you are intent on fishing the river, fish the VERY lower part in a drift boat, or with egg sacks from shore. Its tough to fish the Salmon River from shore near the mouth.
