798.0. "Thermometers" by NHL::EDWARDS () Wed Jul 13 1988 13:09

    Can anyone direct me to a good thermometer ?
    I bought this device from Beans a few months ago which claimed to
    measure depth as well as temp. I cant remember its name but it seemed
    like a useful tool you could supposedly find the temperature at
    the depth the thing got to. Well the temperature was way off - I
    dont know how accurate the depth was but when it told me that the
    water in Walden was 75 when I got frostbite putting my hand in -
    I knew something was wrong. So what do you have ?

    Believe it or not, 75 degree water can feel *cold*! Try jumping
    into a pool when the water's at that temp - brrrr!

    You should consider the time of year, air temp, etc when using the
    finger dip method of temp taking to decide if your fancy thermo
    is off. What does it read when it's sitting at room temp?

    Also, Beans has a great return policy; if you don't like it they'll
    give you a new one, something else of equal value, or your money back.
    can't beat that.

    My partner has a Combo-C-Lector (temp/ph/color) that appears to
    give an accurate temp reading.

    Now if only I believed the color indicator...

798.3CASIO TO THE RESCUEGENRAL::HUNTERfrom SUNNY Colorado, WayneWed Jul 13 1988 19:007
    	I bought one of the CASIO water resistant Temperature Probe
    watches. Not only was it fairly cheap, but it actually measures
    temperature both on and off your wrist. It seems to work pretty
    well. It also has alarm, time zone, day/date, temp. alarms, and
    stop watch. I'm just afraid that if I drop it too deep, one of
    those BIG PIKE might just inhale it because of the electronics inside.
    So, I just use it for surface temperature. About $35.00 on sale.

    Re .1 - I forgot to mention that I did check it when I got home
    and it was way off - and I did get my money back ! but I'm still
    minus one thermometer !

798.5I found one from Cabela'sCLUSTA::STORMWed Jul 20 1988 14:1611
    I have one I like, but can't remember the brand name or anything.
    It's fairly expensive (approx. $45). I got it from Cabela's, but
    it only shows up periodically in their catalog. It's a black plastic
    case with a switch and temperature meter on one end. It opens up
    in the middle so you can unroll the 75 or 100 feet of wire with
    the probe on the end.

    I've used it quite a lot a lake Winnie to find the thermocline.
