796.0. "Tagging Info?" by NYJDEV::HORWITZ (Beach Bagel) Tue Jul 12 1988 11:34

    Is anyone out there involved in any fish tagging program?

    I'd like some info re: how to?
    			   what is needed? (scale, ruler etc?)
    			   is feedback recieved?

    Lately I've been catching several short stripers, and since I fish
    in 'the shadow of the American Littoral Society offices', tagging
    has crossed my mind.

    Also, has anyone had experience, or heard of anyone, tagging Blues?

796.1TAGGED STRIPERSSCOMAN::BINGWed Jul 13 1988 04:1411

    ABOUT A MONTH AGO I CAUGHT A SHORT STRIPER THAT WAS TAGGED. THERE
    WAS A TELEPHONE NUMBER ON THE TAG, I CALLED IT AND TOLD THEM WHEREI
    CAUGHT THE FISH AND THEY IN TURN SENT ME A HAT AND SOME INFO ON
    THE BASS BEFORE IT WAS RELEASED. I KNOW OF A FEW LIKE THAT, THAT
    WERE TAKEN DOWN CAPE COD.

    Bagel,
    	I am involved in NOAA's Shark tagging program and I belive that
    they have programs for Stripers and Blues also. I'll get the
    address at home. I sent for a tagging kit which contained several
    tags, a tagging needle, info cards (which you send to NOAA) and
    several booklets on how to tag and how to identify various species
    of Sharks. With Sharks you usually estimate the length by comparing
    the fish to premeasured sections of the boat and the weight is derived
    from charts provided with the kit. I imagine smaller species could
    be measured against marks on the butt of your surf rod, or even
    a tape measure secured to it.
    	As far as feedback is concerned, I receive reports on the tagging
    program several times a year. If one of your tagged fish is recaptured
    I am told that you will receive all kinds of info on where, when etc.
    This hasn't occurred for me yet.

796.3Shark tagging info?SMURF::AMATOWed Jul 20 1988 14:0610
    Paul,

    Could you post the addesss to get tagging information for sharks?
    Like I mentioned at the talk, I'm starting vacation Jul 31. Are
    you going to be around the 1st week of Aug, or are you definitely
    heading to your camp? If you're around, Capt Baitfish and I are
    probably going to try to get out for a shark/tuna trip up here. Maybe
    we can hook up out there?

796.4Things are looking up for AugustMTBLUE::OKERHOLM_PAUThu Jul 21 1988 09:0712
    Joe,
    	Its still not definite but its looking better for week 1 August.
    Currently we are planning "a few days at the camp" (a major
    breakthrough :^) ). As of now I will probably be fishing both weekends
    and I may get a day in during the week as well. I'll let you know
    for sure by Monday at the latest. Do you have your itinery planned
    yet?
    Paul
    P.S. I'll get the tagging info at home tonight and post it. I'll
    also mail you the numbers for a couple of offshore spots where I've
    gone Shark fishing (and spotted Tuna) in the greater Cape Elizabeth
    area.
796.5Paul, see you on Jeffries?SMURF::AMATOThu Jul 21 1988 09:3911
    Thanks Paul. It looks like the weekend of Jul 30-31 is out. I've
    gotta go to a christining. I'm going to tell my brother next time
    he has a kid, to do it in the winter :-). Anyway, that'll leave
    me the week to try some fishing up there. I want to try at least
    1 day handlining, 1 day trolling for school bluefin (that'll be
    the day with the wife on the boat) and 1 day sharking. I might
    be able to get out 1 other day also. I'm still looking for mooring's
    in the Portsmouth area and should have a handle on that next week.
    Hope we can meet out there at least 1 time.

796.6Shark Tagging InfoRANGLY::OKERHOLM_PAUFri Jul 22 1988 08:5732
    Joe,

    	The address where I send the tags is:

    		National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration
    		National Marine Fisheries Service
    		Naragansett Laboratory
    		RR 7, South Ferry Road
    		Narragansett, Rhode Island 02884

    	The source of the newsletter that I receive is:

    		National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration
    		National Marine Fisheries Service
                Northeast Fisheries Service
    		Narragansett, Rhode Island 02882

    	I don't know which address was the original point of entry for
    the tagging program but I suspect that the Northeast Fisheries
    Service is the administrative branch and would be the better place
    to start. The lab is probably the data processing point.

    	Bagel - I would think that the NFS branch could also supply you
    with info in other tagging programs.

        Re wk 1 Aug>

    		I've got some clarification on my plans. Looks like I can
    make it between Thurs 8/4 and Sunday 8/7. I'll send mail so we can
    work out the details.

796.7Recaptured SharkDNEAST::OKERHOLM_PAUFri Apr 14 1989 18:0513
    	I got something interesting in the mail today; a hat from NOAA.
    One of the blue sharks I tagged last year was caught by a gillnetter
    in Venezuela. How about that!
    	I had tagged it on July 31 last Summer and it was recaptured
    on March 12. It had traveled almost 2,000 miles in the 224 days
    after release.
    	The hat is kind of nice - light blue corderoy (sp?) with a picture
    of a shark and the words MARINE RESEARCH TAGGING PROGRAM embroidered
    on it. The hat is available because of a donation from our own Fisherman
    magazine.
    	Makes me feel good, like I contributed something to the sport.

796.8Good jobWEDOIT::JOYCETue Apr 18 1989 08:155
    Sounds like you did your part, tag and release. What stinks is the
    fish was caught by a gillnetter in Venezuela. I'm sure it was still
    alive when he tagged and released it????

796.9Info on "Tagged" Largemouth???2CRAZY::WHITESTue May 21 1991 16:1821
    My son and I were out fishing Webster Lake this weekend, and we landed
    a small Largemouth ~ 13" that had a small red plastic "tag" for lack of
    a better word through its back, just behind the dorsal fin. It looked
    something like this:

    			|------------------|

    There was no writing or info on it. The positioning of had caused the
    top part of the fish's tail to be rubbed raw by the loose end of the
    tag.

    I cut the tag off, and released the fish in hopes that its tail (and
    back) would heal up over time.

    Any clues as to what group might have tagged the fish in this manner,
    and what it was meant to designate?

    Thanks,

    Jack

     You dummy Jack!

     The fish's tail was beat up from the spawn! I find it hard to belive
     that a tag would do that. Our club tags 60% of all fish we catch and
     unless the fish shrank about 5" the tag would never find the tail

    I bet it's to scare (coerce? inspire?) people into releasing the fish...

    ..or maybe to spoil the fun of catching it by demonstrating that someone
    else already caught him first.

Not to jump in on Sully, But, I have caught one of his clubs taged bass. It had
a green tag on it. They tag fish for thier records in the hopes that
people who would catch the fish and eat it may let it go because of the tag.

The state about 5 years ago tag bass in that area with red tags. But they
as well as Sullys have writing on them. CLEAN THE SCUM off it and see
if there is any writing.

Also about 4 years ago the state had clubs tag fish for them for lake
censous.

    Yo - Slam,

    The tag went through the fishes body just behind the top fin, and the
    plastic had rubbed the fish raw at the top front part of the tail, where
    it joins the main body.

     Ok folks.

     Tagging...

     Belive it or not Don & Johnny H-C, we record length and weight of all
     the quality fish we catch. We have tags bearing our club name and
     each is individually numbered and the data is individually recorded
     for each fish.
     As in a previous reply, we hope that when someone catches a tagged
     fish they would think twice before keeping it and release it. We have
     had numurous calls this year of anglers catching fish with our tags.
     Our club is a member of the federation and it's easy to get my phone
     number out of the travel guide. We have verified data on 15 of the
     45 fish we caught last year. We tabualte our records and at the end
     of the year send our findings (these are factual length weight records
     and date of catch reported from the anglers. These are not opinions!)
     to the state. We got 5 calls from anglers at manchaug including
     Bass'in Bob Puishy's who caught one of our fish. Bob as many BASS
     anglers do recorded the lenght/weight and released it. We were happy
     to see that the fish a year ago and has grown almost 2" and gained
     3/4 of a pound. All the fish in Manchaug have all grown in size
     and weight since last caught. 1 fish there has been caught 6 times
     that I know of in the last year and 1/2. He was even caught twice
     through the ice!! What a dummy!!
