788.0. "Rhode Island Yellowfin Trip" by TOOK::SWEET (Capt Codfish...Looking for Mr. Tuna) Thu Jul 07 1988 15:57

    I am beginning to plan my yellowfin trip off block island. I need
    info!!! What I want to do is trailer my boat down to the salt pond
    at pt judith and fish 2-3 days during the first 2 weeks of
    august. Can anyone give me info on where to stay, I will have the
    wife and kid along so it needs to be clean and on the nicer
    side, maybe a pool, on the beach ect. How about ramps
    in that area?? Has anyone been to block? What is it like, maybe
    we should stay there and have a real short run to the east fleet.

    I know in some other note other northerners expressed interest in
    doing something like this...now is the time to plan it. Walt,
    you have first dibs on joining me and deb as we talked about,
    anyone else??

    I'll be spending this weekend at block island with my girlfriend
    (who has asked me not to bring my fishing pole but I am going to
    try to catch some blues while I am there). I will poke around and
    ask about the yellowfin and facilities. I am staying in a boarding
    house type of place that my girlfriend's mom knows the the owner
    of. I'll get you a report monday.

788.2I LIKED GOAT ISLAND ALOTSTRATA::WOOLDRIDGEWorm fishermen have stiffer rodsThu Jul 07 1988 17:3714
    YO,
       If you want to go in class stay at the Sheraton on Goat Island.
    Put your boat in the harbor. Block is just a shot away and Newport
    is at your command. Another idea is Westport in Mass. Its at the
    end of 88 off of 95. It is just prior to Horseneck beach. My friend
    has a slip there. There ramp is huge and from there Cuttyhunk,
    the vinyard are to one side (watch out for the area called "hens and
    chicks". They are some nasty rocks with terrible current about a
    mile out after you get out of the harbor on the left. Check your
    chart. NASTY NASTY. Two experienced lobstermen died there this year
    with more accidents to come to the unknowing, ignorant or chartless
    crazies. To the otherside is Block. Blues were hitting well 2 weeks
    ago but no yellowfin.
                                              NIGHTCRAWLER~~~~~~~~~
788.3Info. on Point Judith!FRAGLE::EASTERWed Jul 13 1988 13:4513
    I have fished for tuna for the passed two years off of Block Island.
    I have been using a charter out of Point Judith and yes there is
    a launch available. There's also a Holiday Inn about 5 miles away.
    I'll scrape up the info. and reply later. Last year we hooked into
    a good 300 pounder but lost it about 30 min's later. If you've never
    had a large one on, get ready, it's no picnic, lot's of work to
    be done by all. Are you going to high speed troll or chum line?
    What size rod, reel, line? And, what kind of equipment do you have?
    The week before I got there last year, this boat landed a 634 pound
    Mako shark while tuna fishing.

    regards,
    John 'Hook-set'.
788.4ChunkamaniaTOOK::SWEETCapt Codfish...Looking for Mr. TunaWed Jul 13 1988 13:585
    I will probably chunk since that is what works in august. I will
    be using standup tuna rods in the 50-80 lb class (read anything
    from a penn 4/0, 6/0 to 50tw international).

788.5Yellow Fin, where art thou?JAWS::DEZZANIWed Jul 13 1988 17:5215
    I have a Summer home in Charlestown, west of Pt Judith and I spend
    a lot of time looking for Yellow Fin. I heard rumors of some
    small ones off the fairway bouy this past weekend but the traditional
    areas are quiet. the water is still on the cool side, it was still
    65 F at Coxes Ledge last week. the Yellow Fin like 70 degree water.

    There are a number of slips in the area and there is a Hotel in
    Pt Judith, the Dutch Inn that is not too bad. If you want to bring
    a family this might be a good bet because they can walk to the beach.

    Lets keep this note going for the Pt Judith Yellow Fin crowd, since
    I spend a lot of time down there I'll keep you informed of the local
    reports. I expect to make my first trip the last Friday of July.

    If you want more details drop me a note on the net at JAWS.
788.6there here...SMURF::AMATOMon Jul 18 1988 09:097
    as of saturday (7/16/88) there were yellowfin off the fairway bouy,
    but not taking anything. lots of yellow fin n. of the fingers to
    the dump off marthas vineyard. lots of bait in the water. green
    machines and squid bars the hot lures. a few marlin by the 31 fathom
    hole. plenty of sharks in the area. water temps anywhere from 67
    to 73. if you can get a slick down, butters work ok.

788.7WFOV12::EDRYThu Jul 28 1988 10:4112
    yes, they are there...

    southeast of block, friends' boat landed four on butters on monday
    7/26. we boated two on the following two days on butters, 100#
    and 65# bluefin. saw nice white marlin battle one boat away, but
    were harassed by blue fish constantly... fish hit at 69 - 70 degree
    water. didn't see many being caught. price at Montauk seemed low
    at $2.50 to $2.75. are prices any better in Port Judith?

788.8Yellowfin next Week!!!TOOK::SWEETCapt Codfish...Looking for Mr. TunaThu Jul 28 1988 10:478
    Any news on the yellowfin off Block. Looks like the first trip
    for me is next week and I want know where the fish are. Anyone
    know where the fleet is fishing? If the yellowfin won't
    cooperate then were are the sharks? Mako's preferably but I'll
    settle for a Blue (shark). And Joe...none of this bluefish
    biz while looking for tuna this year...thems the rules.

    re: .7
    $2.50-2.75 are good prices for montauk. As the season goes on the
    price drops. Last year we got about $1.75 in August. I take it your
    friends had the NY lisence to sell at Montauk?

788.10I NEED RADAR!!!!!!!TOOK::SWEETCapt Codfish...Looking for Mr. TunaWed Aug 03 1988 15:1927
    Well yesterday was supposed to be the first yellowfin outing of
    the year. Joe A and I were scheduled to to go down to pt judith
    leaving tewks around 0230 and be in water at 0530. Well Joe calls
    me on Monday night as says things don't look to good, he is
    up in Rye NH and the ocean is socked in with Fog (gee its sunny
    here?) and he had called the marina in RI and they had fog in the
    morn but it broke at about 1000 and they 1-3 mile of visablity.
    So we decide to leave at 0530 and fish later hoping the fog will
    lift once again...So we leave tewks as planned (rye was still socked
    in) and trailer down to Pt Judith and find fog like you read about.
    We could not see the end of the dock, I'm talking 100 feet of
    visablity at best. Theres a guy there in a 40ft Post saying that
    his radar is not cutting through the fog and he getting echos off
    it. So we start the waiting game. At 1030 the fog has not broken
    up a bit. So we went boat shopping instead. Called the marina
    back that evening...the fog never lifted to more than mile
    of visability around 1500. We trailer over 5 hours and the boat
    never touched the water...so much for yellowfin.

    By the way they say the bite is still off but there are not
    many boats going out because they have been socked in for a number
    of days now and with the air we have now it is not likely to
    open up soon.

    Santa List for 88: Numero Uno - RADAR!!!!

788.11CANNAY::RIOPELWed Aug 03 1988 17:4821
                          (lucky me?!?!?)

    Well I got out this past Sunday. The first time we haven't seen
    anything. Not 1 baitfish, whale, yellowfin, blues, birds-at-work.
    Purely the worst.... Not even a shark or ocean sunfish. Seas were
    a bit choppy, visability 1-3 miles. The worst weather was west of
    us - (maybe the R.I. area and Block IS.) and the ride in got tricky
    with the thundershowers. Read that as rain like in monsoons. Loran
    got screwed up with the lightning, but really not a serious problem
    with the visability..

    So I'm not sure you didn't have a better time shopping for boats...

    By the way, did you find butterfish??? How much for how many dollars??
    All I could get was pogies, 20# for 10$. The bait store said they
    buy butters at $.70 a lb., so I'm trying to get to the truth...

788.12$700 can keep you fishing in the fogBIGALO::OKERHOLM_PAUWed Aug 03 1988 17:5614
    Bruce,
    	The Apelco 9900 is being discontinued and is selling for under
    $700. I know that it is a very low functionality, low power, entry
    level RADAR but I ordered one from Boat U.S. last week anyway.(It may be
    waiting for me at home right now). It is on sale for $659 and at
    that price I figure I can justify it. All I want is something to
    show me whats out there within a mile at the most so I am hoping
    that this will do it and keep me off the rocks. Hamilton Marine
    in Searsport, Maine also has it on sale for $699.99 so I am sure
    that most dealers have it at a reduced price. Maybe you should go
    for it also. I don't think anything will be available at this price
    again.

788.13Let me know how it works...TOOK::SWEETCapt Codfish...Looking for Mr. TunaThu Aug 04 1988 09:3416
    re .11

    Kenport Marina in East Matunick (sp) had butters for $15 for a 25lb
    flat. I think this is s a good price.

    Paul,

       Sounds very tempting...I will be real interested to hear how
    you do with that unit. If it seems to get you by then I will go
    for it. Let me know after you have run in it some thick fog, I
    would be most concerned if it has the power to not return a
    screen full of fuzz in a thick fog. Fog has a lot of water
    vapor in it and when it is thick it seems to be like rain and
    send echos back to you.

    The tuna are in. They were jumping all around us. We were south
    of the vineyard. I can tell you the numbers if I look at a chart.
    Don't know how well they're biting, but we had one take a shark
    bait...
