I'd wait until they cross a road and run over their heads. I saw
one last week in Connecticut that must have been a couple feet long.
If they could move faster, a snapper would be one SCARY animal.
Coonass, aren't the big ones tough? Turtles live a long time, a
big one could be 50 (?) years old or more.

There is a good place at the Acton/Concord line.It is just off
Rt 62 just after the shopping center and it is about 100yds on the
left.It is a small pond that is feed by the assibet river and ground
source water.I have never seen sooo many snappers in a single place!
I went there fishing and saw no fish what-so-ever but I did see
snappers in the water, walking by,every 5 minutes or so.

783.4 | Turtle hunting in Lousiana | PLDVAX::MLOEWE | ALF for president! | Fri Jul 01 1988 15:01 | 22 |
| I was watching the Discovery channel the other day and they were
covering hunting for snapping turtles in Lousiana. According to
the show, the old timers knew how catch the big ones. And get this,
they use their bare hands. They showed this hillbilly sort of guy
standing in the water up to chest with just his swimming trunks
on. He would go over to where they believe a huge turtle would
be under the water and in some shelter. They showed him take a
deep breath and go under the surface, about 20 seconds later he
came up and said "thars a biggon' don dere", "grab my head so
I can git air whin I com up". He took another deep breath, plunged
beneath the murky surface, and what felt like almost a minute later,
his head pops up, but it goes down right away. He comes up again and
you can see he's got the turtle by the back end. But the turtle
pulled him back down again (no way is he going to let go). Another
guy jumps in the water, grabs his head and brings it to the surface
so he can breathe. Then it was a duo effort to get this snapper
to the shore. One of the guys on shore says, "Joe, turn him around
so we can see his head". Joe turns the turtle around and all we
see on TV is a gapping mouth that could hold three softballs.
I believed they said the turtle was over 35 pounds.
I hate to be the guy named "lefty" in this bussiness.

| YO,
As I understand it, if you open a cold COORS and set it on the
bank of a river known to to hold snappers they will eventually crawl
to it. As they are all arguing over who gets the first hit, you
open up on em with an M-16. BINGO! (The assabett in Hudson has
em and I have seen em with shells more then two feet across) The
Blackstone river also has them and if I told you how big I have
seen them you would call me a liar.......

was called Orphan Animals, or something like that, and it was about
terrapins (fresh water turtles) in Africa. One of the guys in the
show was explaining why it was so bad to get bitten by one of these
things while waving his fingers around in front of the terrapins face.
That's when my wife noticed he was missing his index finger on his

783.13 | snapper stew | SCOMAN::TADRY | | Wed Jul 06 1988 13:12 | 46 |
| I had this all typed yesterday then the system went down, try again...
Your reading all the warnings of how nasty the little buggers can
be and it can't be emphasized enough if your going to catch them
for game. I used to catch them when I was a kid and used to keep
them as "pets" in the backyard, it was the in thing to do that summer.
We would catch them bare handed in ponds on the Dupont estate, never
invited, in Delaware. We would always turn them loose either when
our parents made us or when we got tired of them. The trick to bare
handed catching was really getting the ones that were far enough
away from the pond, get their tale and then putting them in a bucket
head first. Since then I have fished for them with people who enjoy
eating them,I never tried it. To fish for them you need a medium
to heavy action rod with at least 14lb test line and a stainless
steel leader topped off with a pike size hook. A coleman lantern,
this is an night time sport, a case of beer (depending on how many
folks are going), a good size bucket, and chicken necks. Since you
go at night, they are real active feeders at night, pick up a clip
on "cow bell" that you can get at most tackle shops. Bait your hook
and if you fishing a pond or lake keep the bait on the bottom in
less than 5 feet of water. If your fishing in a stream or river
shoot for the tailwaters of rapids or in a bend. Those spots usually
accumulate food for them. Clip on you bell and when you hear the
bell ring pick up your and and if you feel resistance on the line
and its taking line you might have one, it won't drop it if you
tug a bit on it. Set the hook and reel it in. It'll fight a bit
until it gets its feet on the shore line then its go nuts. It take
2 people to really land it, one to work the pole and the other to
get its tale to lift it into the bucket. Watch its claws, there
very sharp and can inflict nasty cuts. Once in the bucket, head
first, it'll try and dig its way out the bottom so made sure its
a real sturdy one. The guys I went with used to feed them chop meat
for 2 days after they caught them to purge their system out. You'll
be surprised with what you see. To clean them you'll need a hatchet,
a 1"wood chisel, hammer, and a filet knife. They used to torment
the turtle to bite a stick then stretch its neck and remove it.
Then hang the turtle by the claws and tale for about 1-2 hours to
"bleed" it. When it came to removing the shell the legs were still
going, they used the wood chisle to chip away the shell/underside
attach points then pried off the shell, no easy feat. They would
crock pot the turtle meat with veggies and potatoes until done.
Maybe coonass could dig up a cajun style recipe for these critters.
Well thats my experiance with snappers, good luck.
Ray,
P.S. I never did hear of a snapper call.

there was a HUGE snapper on the other end with MY fish in his mouth.
We had a pretty good war there for a few minutes, but I beat him.
BTW, the Leominster Sportsman's Club had a turtle derby a couple

783.25 | Glad I don't fish in <<gator>> country | VIDEO::LEVESQUE | I fish, therefore I am. | Fri Jul 08 1988 09:30 | 28 |
| I went bass fishing in my dad's canoe with a couple of friends last
night. We caught a few small bass (12-14") and some crappie. Now
you're wondering why I'm putting this in a snapping turtle note.
Well, at one point, we saw a medium sized snapping turtle (about
2 feet across) *right* next to the boat. All the fish on the stringer
had started trying to swim away; then we noticed the turtle. We
picked up the stringer, and there was a large triangular shaped
marking on the side of the largest bass. I laughed and said that
we just ruined the turtle's meal.
We drifted away from that turtle, and we didn't think of him again
for a while. Then my friend Ken, who was fishing crawlers from the
bow, hooked a slightly smaller snapper, which fortunately spit the
hook at boatside. We laughed about that since he had only caught
kibbers before that. A few minutes later, I hooked a *monster* on
a rubber worm; but agian this turned out to be a snapper. It bit
my worm cleanly in half. Not five minutes later, our stringer started
to swim off. Now I was P.O. Jim, the guy in the middle, started
a tug of war with the medium sized turtle. I started beating him
over the head with a spare fishing pole. The little bugger straightened
out the stringer and swam off with the biggest fish!
So all you mighty turtle hunters, go to Robinson Pond in Hudson,
NH. You can catch many turtles, and relieve us of their nuisance.
The Doctah

That was what we did when we didn't have enough money to go buy a 6 pack

Anyway, do you also marinate the purging meat for the snappers

Right @ next set of lights (follow signs for 3A)
Go about 5-8 miles on 3A
After you pass the little fish market on the right, take
a right at Central St (at the light)
Go straight on this rd- turns into Rt 111
After the lights that are just past Burger King, you go
about a mile or two; take a left at Lawrence Rd
Take your first left off of this rd (can't remember the_name)
Take a left @ Robinson Rd- pond is 1/2 mile up on left
From this spot, the majority of the turtles are on the far

(why am I doing this..? oh well, here goes...)
A very well thought out and penetrating analysis, I must say...
Pardon me for saying so, but I think that this kind of simplistic,
ultra-liberal, bourgeois-vs-proletariat-all-problems-stem-from-
capitalistic-oppression-of-the-masses-get-out-of-South-Africa
mentality will do more to prolong the racial and social
difficulties of that country than anything else. All that the
empty gesturing of divestment has truly done is make a few South
African businessmen wealthy by giving them bargains (wanna buy a
company cheap?) and cause the US to turn to the Soviet Union
- or middle men - to obtain vital commodities (like Chromium and
rare-earth metals) because no one else has them - and put still
more blacks out of work. It also deprives us of the most meaningful
long-term platform of influence that we have. If we (US and Europe)
had *more* business dealings with SA instead of less, we could
have a much more *positive* influence for good over there than we
do now.
It's so easy to point the finger at SA and rise up in righteous
indignation, yet, in spite of all the inequities of their society,
life in SA offers a far better standard of living for blacks than
any other country in Africa...
The problems are real, but this "boycott Coors" attitude accomplishes
nothing positive and mitigates against any sort of reasonable solutions.
While we're at it let's boycott MacDonald's, they have business dealings
with the Soviet Union...
Ed
(I'd buy Coors, but they don't sell the kind of beer I drink- root!)
P.S. Snappahs drink Coors Lite, because it don't slow them down!!

I *know* this is the snapping turtle topic, which is partly why I thought
that any bozo who wants to peddle that Jesse Jackson tripe (tripe - is
that a fish?) in a fishing notesfile deserves at least one good argument.
No more politicizing for me, this is the fishing file and no other -

Thats what I like about this conference! It's all in
good fun eh (and is informative as well). Nothing like busting someone
(a pastime for me I must confess). You will also find tripe in CAMBELLS

If you go sanpper hunting ;^) here in the great state of Mass,
all you need is a valid fishing license. Same rules apply as
with any fishing, only two hooks per line!!

783.54 | When is a log, not a log? | SHIPIT::ROSINSKI | | Thu Jul 21 1988 09:55 | 24 |
| I'm a novice fisherman, trying to figure out how to catch something
besides panfish. Last Saturday morning I was trying out a new Weed
Wader (I lost my first one on a log). On my second cast, I once
again got hooked into some submerged brush. I pulled hard, and
slowly started dragging it toward me. Suddenly, my line started
moving to the right, and I realized this was no deadfall. When
I finally got it close to shore, a Snapper about 20" across popped
his head out of the water. This guy was not happy with me, and
was hissing loudly. My hook had gone completely through the side
of his mouth, and wasn't going to come out on it's own. I was trying
to figure out how to get my lure back, when my line broke, and he
swam off. All you could see was the orange skirt of the lure, and
the silver spinners flashing as he disappeared. I saw him several
more times, as he came up for air, and floated around. He never
left the area I caught him in. Later, I moved to another area,
and was fishing a rubber worm. I was plagued by turtles the entire
time, so I gave up. This all happened at one of the ponds at Harold
Parker State Park in Andover, just off RT125. If your looking for
turtles, you might want to try there, you could probably eat what
you catch. Besides, I know one turtle out there who should be real
easy to spot, and has a hankerin' for orange and black Weed Waders.

vacation......geeez, working at DEC and vacations too. Anyway,
. When seems to be down to Aug. 4th a thursday nite.
. Where is still T.B.D. we just need to decide, it looks like most
any pond will do.
. Who, Who cares....You,the Molester, Big Don, the Worm, myself
who ever else wants to go.
. Boats?????, no boats. This is shoreline fishing at its best. Who
wants a pissed 40 lb turtle running around their boat at night,
not me.
. I told Don and he's all set. He'll bring the films, HA!.
Okay with you?.

| TBDW,
Boats will make it more challenging,
Has far has bait goes, I heard Chicken necks are great, we should
be able to cut MOOSEFACES up into allot of bait.
The best bet is to chum the lake the day before with anything like
chopped up kivers, liver, mooseface necks. etc

| Yes Garry boats would be more challenging for those foolhardy few.
re.-1.....molester, Mooseface necks, nah, their not into delicacies
their just stupid turtles looking for basic subsistence, maybe you
could cook something up, maybe.
I really think that boat fishing for turtles would be too difficult,
but if your really want to try it.....what about Quinsiq up past
the 290 bridge by the culvert that feeds the swamp?.

| Las month down at de camp dere wuz two big snappers op near de house.
Dey wuz lookin for a place to lay dere aigs.... an dere wuz a big
ole kin-type snake rat behin to eat dem!!!
I seen more big snappers way away frum de lak dis trip. Mebbe de
dry weather messed dem op and dey are lookin for sand to lay dere
aigs.
De bes way to fin turtles at nite is wadin. Wen chew feels sompin
wit chore toes chew feel where de sides are an den chew dives onder
an pull him out.. he won bite onder de water, but pick him op on
both sides an give him sompthin to hold onto, lak a stick or he'll
pull his head in an chew cant cut it off. Takes bout 10-15 minites
fo dem to die an chew kin begin cleanin dem. Chew will need a double
bit ax, a cane knife, a skinnin knife, an som peoples use on ob
dem lectric knifes.
Been lookin fo a recipe, but can't find one. Eberybody down chere
jes add de meat to whatever chew are cookin, gumbo, jambalaya, etc...or
chew mite use it in pleece ob chicken in another recipe.
Good turtlin.....
