777.1 | SI' SENOR | STRATA::WOOLDRIDGE | Worm fishermen have stiffer rods | Wed Jun 22 1988 18:04 | 19 |
| YO ED,
Thats not a bad rule of thumb. But night fishing is excellent.
I would rate "prime" fishing times from say an hour prior to dusk
through 7am or so the following morning. Bass do not like the heat
of the day. The seek dark shade and cover or go deep. They can be
had "easier" during these times due to forage also becoming more
active, ie; frogs...etc. So I would say your odds are better during
these times. Lakes/streams also have less human activity.
There is a fishing almanac that is published monthly rating
prime fishing times by the position of the moon. I do not know if
it is of value or not. The times of day for prime fishing change
day to day gradually.
Time of day is not the only thing to take into account. Just
prior to a front moving in can be GREAT. Weather affects them as
well. I assume these things relate to salt water as well?..
I'll get up early to fish anytime.

| Ed,
If you put a lure, with the proper presentation, in front of
a BASS any time of the day, chances are he will strike it. I have
caught bass all different times of the day. All you got to do is
find them and put the bait in front of them. Don't forget most
tournys are held from 7AM - 3PM and people catch them all through
out the day. I do agree that sometimes might be more productive
than others, like the worm says (and I wont admit agreeing with
him) from dusk til dawn is wild. the bass seem to move away from
the cover and are on the prowl for a meal, they move into the shallows,
curise the shorelines and hit the surface for bugs and frogs.

| Ed,
More of my fishing is done in the evenings into the night than daytime, not
necessarily by choice. I do agree that bass can be taken at any time of the
day, including mid-day when the sun is high and hot, providing you know
where to look for them.
One comment I'll make...
The excitement of a 2Lb (or larger) bass caught at night on a topwater plug
is 10 times better than catching 6 of 'em during the day!! I nailed almost
a 7lber a couple of weeks ago at night and I haven't stopped shaking since!
Enjoy!

| A lot has to do with conditions. The lake I live on is best in
the moring and evening, mostly because the speed boats and water
skiers are out going over the deep holes on the lake. I prefere
morning and evenings because thats when the sceanery is most beutiful,
and I prefer the solitude.

| The best time to fish is any time you can!
I don't think there's any rule about bass fishing that holds true
ALL the time.
The same lake will probably become more active at different times
of day with the seasonal changes, weather changes, boat traffic,
etc, etc, etc... Some lakes seem to be 'day' lakes, others seem
to be 'night' lakes.
I'll stick with Joe, nothing beats a bass exploding on a surface
lure at night!

Mr. 'Crawler is correct about sunset/sunrise being important in
the salt. This is especially true when surf fishing. I cannot count
the number of times that we have had super action with blues and
stripers from 'first light' until sunrise+1hr. After that it is
evident that the blues move offshore (they usually tease us by staying
2 casts away :-) )and the bass just stop. The same holds true (in
reverse) at sundown. And of course any "real" striper fisherman
reacts to sunlight like Dracula.

| Right you are rich...Even when fishing from a boat the best time
time to find a bluefish blitz is at day break (usually about 5 am)
and the second best time is at dusk. The early AM is the time to
work the harbors and beaches looking for blues pushing the pogies
into some tight little corner from which the have only one fate.
I hope try some striper fishing soon...I have not yet caught one
but I would like this to change real soon.

That is where you'll catch the "Keg" tonight sitting on
my cooler and using Zara spooks and Hula poppers.I also
noticed that about half hour before sunset if your using
say a green worm the bass will shutdown but you then throw
the trusty old BLACK worm on,the bass follow them right
into shore and hit right before you take them out of the
water to cast again. They go nuts on them black worms at
night.
Anyone tried them "Lunker light bobbers" at night with
a shiner????

| The best time to fish is whenever you really need to. But to enhance
that need, it is important to understand that most living creatures
have major and minor feeding periods which are influenced by their
environment, tides, moon phases, etc. I believe Field and Stream
magazine presents solunar charts for different longitude and latitude
areas which can be helpful in determining when those feeding periods
may occur in your area. The times change similarly to the way the
tides do, advancing in daily.
Check it out, try it and see if it makes sense. I know when I'm
catching fish, it inspires me to feed on a sandwich and a beer.

| I agree with everybody!!! I prefer early morning and dusk for the
best results, but then I have done well at high noon also. It seems
like you have to work harder at it mid day, but you can still catch
good fish. My own preference is to go out EARLY in the morning befor
first light, come in for a nap and lunch at 10:00 and back out for
two or three hours before dark. The nap in the middle is the best
part followed by the beer after I get back at night!! (fishing just
fits in with naps and beer!)

|
After work from about 5:00 till 8:00 is when I seem to have the
most luck with bass. I have been useing a hula popper in the late
afternoon on the warm steaming days and the bass hit it with a
vengance. The two treble hooks on it have made the hits a no miss
proposition. The only thing to that is some of the fish have been
cut pretty bad but nothing fatal.
I thought about cutting one hook off of each treble but I don't
want to loose that sure catch feature of the lure. If anyone has
tried this I want to know if it does anything to the action of
the popper and the hit/miss rate.

re .12
I have cut the leading hook off of many plugs I use in structure
(weeds, rocks etc.) this certainly helps but reduces the cathing
percentage. You should have reasonable luck trying it on HULA POPPERS.
I cut all the leading treble hooks (1/3) off of all my little George when
fishing for white bass. The dam things go to the bottom so fast
that this is the only way I have found to not loose every other
one.

I tried one of them "Lunker light bobbers" the other
night,what a gas!! I fired the cylamune(sp?) stick up
at dusk and it lasted about 2 hours.I caught 8 bass
between 15-18" and lost about the same amount. The action
was so fast as soon as the minnow settled in the water
the light was gone.I think I'll leave the cooler home
next time..........Nahhhhh.
