775.1 | Bass Areas | KYOA::EVANKO | | Tue Jun 21 1988 09:46 | 27 |
| I have been vactioning in New Hampshire for the past several years
in the Winni area. If you are looking for largemouth fishing, try
the Merrymeeting river, I have had good success overall bass fishing there,
along with several catches of bass in the 19"-23" range. Pickerel
and panfish are abundant also. This river is ideally suited for
a canoe and have used one on it for several years, current is slow.
Half Moon lake has also provided good large and smallmouth fishing.
I have been successful for largemouth in the channel where this lake
dumps in another by the public boat launch area. You will have to
take the canoe trough the drainage tubes that run under the road
by the launch area, but not to worry, there is plently of room. If
you plan to fish the lake itself, a word of caution, make sure you
get there early, because once the boaters and skiers are there, they
have a tendancy to show no mercy for someone in a canoe.
Both these areas can be accessed along Route #28 as you head into
the Alton area. I know of a motel that is at the intersection of
#28 and #11 along with several campsites that you can investigate as
you drive along route 28 if your are into camping.
I will be there the week of July 4th, and I'm hoping the fishing is
as good as it has been in the previous years.

775.2 | Pawtuckaway State Park | VAX4::TOMAS | Joe | Tue Jun 21 1988 10:08 | 18 |
| Les,
If you're up to camping (i.e. tent), then you might look at Pawtuckaway
State Park in Nottingham/Raymond. The state park is very well kept, the
tent sites are generally large, clean, and yet are not stacked on top of
each other. The lake is clean and has an excellent population of largemouth
and a few smallies, pickeral, white & yellow perch, hornpout & of course,
kivvers. There are quite a number of small islands to explore or simply
relax on to get away.
I'm planning a week of camping the first week of August and I'm really
looking forward to it. BTW, because it's a state park, they do not accept
reservations. I have been told by park officials that the best time to
check in is Sunday. The office opens at 9AM, but the lines start at 7AM.
People checking out must be out by noon. They said Sunday is the highest
turnover day and your best bet to get a waterfront site.

775.3 | Winnisquam for bronzebacks | WACKY3::COURSE3 | | Tue Jun 21 1988 14:08 | 7 |
| If you want to catch smallmouths, one of the best places in NH is
lake Winnisquam. The southern part of the lake is loaded with 3-5
lb smallies. Take exit 20 (Tilton/Laconia) off of 93, and take a
left at the end of the exit. Explore the southern part of the lake.
I've caught bronzebacks over 4 lbs there.
