761.0. "Maine Coast Area Fishing" by XCELR8::MACKEY () Mon Jun 13 1988 10:59

I will be traveling along the coast of Maine the end of this month
and I am wondering if anyone could tell me some good freshwater
fishing areas. My route will be Stockton Springs (near Bucksport)
to Campabello Island to Eastport and back. I will be driving a
motorhome so back roads are a problem.

Rather than list all the good fishing along your proposed route
I would rather steer you to a fairly complete source of the info
you seek. DeLorme fishing map booklets are available by county.
There are also DeLorme books available on Maine Rivers & Streams,
Lakes & Ponds and Saltwater. You can pick them up in most sporting
goods stores. Maybe you could stop off at Kittery Trading Post or
LL Bean's along the way and pick them up. If you want the address
of the Publisher let me know and I will look it up for you.

Above was part of a reply to a note I entered, asking about stripers
in Maine. I think I'll take the advice of .1 and order those maps
from Beans. In the mean time...

Looking at Delorme's Maine Atlas, Merrymeeting Bay, where the
Androscoggin meets the Kennebec, and then flows into the ocean
looks real interesting. Anyone care to share some info on
fishing that area this time of year?

761.3Kennebec River - Merrymeeting BayMTBLUE::OKERHOLM_PAUTue Jul 19 1988 12:5113
I have never fished Merrymeeting Bay but I have seen people fishing
all the way up the river as far as Augusta for stripers. Blues usually travel
up as far as Bath although I don't know what's keeping them this year, they
are unusually late.
Are you planning on fishing from a boat or from shore? With a boat
(this does not mean canoe) you could launch at Bath and go upstream to the
Bay. Trolling or casting into some of the many rips may produce something.
If you don't have any luck there you could go downstream and fish for blues
across from Bath Iron Works just below the bridge or keep working your way
out to sea. You can also fish from shore across from BIW but if you are shore
bound you would be much better off at Popham Beach.
If you want more detail, let me know.

Thanks Paul. I'm considering taking the canoe, but was planning
on leaving the boat at home. If I take the boat it'd look to much
like a "fishing trip" and that might not go over too well... 8^)

I just took a look at the Maine Atlas and Popham Beach State Park
sounds like it's just what I'm looking for, thanks for the tip,
any other spots like that one around?

I'm also looking for a campground in the area, I've heard Hermit
Island is real nice, but we'd like electricity - we got a little
fishing buddy on the way and the wife doesn't want to 'rough' it
    too much.

    Thanks again,

Any info on the Pemiquid Beach area? That's where I was able to
    find a campsite.

Pemiquid River, Damariscotta River, Johns River, Johns Bay?

761.6I'll get back with more infoMTBLUE::OKERHOLM_PAUThu Jul 21 1988 08:529
    Don Mac,
There is a campground right near Popham. I'll see if I can find
out the name and number. I'll also ask around about Pemaquid. I
don't have any first hand knowledge of the area but I'll see what
    others have to say.
    Paul

P.S. Bring plenty of "fly dope". I fished the surf at Popham once
and could not believe the mesquitoe population.

    Yo Paul...

I will be making an overnight stop at Booth Bay...any good shore
fishing around there? Won't have the boat but I should be able to
sneak along a 10ft surf stick. Will be going Aug 10th.

Hows the offshore seen up there looking?

I knew you would like that one...much easier to fit a two piece
10 foot surf rod in the trunk of the wifes suburu than a 21 foot
boat! I'll just lay in on the bottom and say 'hey look what I found'
as we pull up to some good looking shore line.

761.10BoothbayRANGLY::OKERHOLM_PAUThu Jul 21 1988 10:589
    CC,
There is a footbridge at the northern end of the harbor and
I have heard that you can fish for flounder from it. I was there
last week for Windjammer Days and looked it over. I wasn't impressed,
but you never can tell. I don't know where to get bait there either.
Boothbay is primarily a tourist mecca although several party boats
are based there. I'll do some research tonight and see what I can
    find.

Paul, I checked out most of the campsites in the area that are listed
in the Maine Atlas, they were either full or did not offer elec.

Thanks Paul...This is not a fishing trip...the wife wants to go
to freeport (beans) and we are going to stay in Booth Bay. My
REAL vacation will be a couple trips to Block for yellowfin.

went fishing there last saturday and caught 125 mackeral in
two hours. i think the mackeral are in. blues should be coming
soon. you can launch a boat at the restoration just down the road
    from the camping area.
also damariscotta lake and biscay pond are good fishing areas
damariscotta has bass, salmon, brown trout, brook trout, and various
    junk fish.
biscay pond has brown trout, bass, white perch, and other junk
    fish.
    		good luck

talk to the people at the camping area and they will be able to
tell you how to get to the restoration. there is a dock there that you
can fish off of. people usually use diamond jigs.

761.16DEC Downeast Tourist Info ReportMTBLUE::OKERHOLM_PAUFri Jul 22 1988 16:3243
	Re .5>

	Don Mac,
According to one DeLorme publication " People catch
mackerel and harbor pollock right off the Pemaquid Restaurant
dock and the harbor itself is a good bet for tinker mackerel.
Upriver there are good sand bottom areas for flounder." I would
think that Pemaquid Beach itself would be a good spot for some
surf casting. New Harbor on the other side of Pemaquid Neck is
supposed to have flounder fishing but I don't know about access.
Bait is available at the Fisherman's Co op on the opposite
side of the Pemaquid River from the beach (207-677-2801). This may
just be bait for the local commercial fishermen but it would be worth
	a call.

	Re .7>

	Capt Codfish,
DeLorme's fishing maps state that there are all kinds of
fishing in the Boothbay area but it appears that it requires a
boat. I couldn't find any bait sources either but I know that there
are commercial fishing warves in the harbor and you might be able to
get some there ... there is one right next to Captain Fishes Motel.
You might want to try fishing off the footbridge or some of the many
docks in the harbor. You could also buy clams at a supermarket for
	bait.
As I stated in my earlier reply, I went there last week
for windjammer days. It was a family outing but I brought two rods
"just in case". I never used the rods but I enjoyed myself doing the
tourist thing and I recommend Boothbay as a good vacation spot even
	if you don't go fishing.

	Re all>
I don't want to get you all in trouble with the family but
if you want to do some Downeast offshore fishing I'd be happy to
take you out if I can. I live in West Gardiner which is probably less
than a one hour drive by land or two by sea from both locations ...
sounds like the midnight ride of Paul Revere :^) ... If you want
to work that into your plans, send me mail and we'll try to work out
	the details.

Thanks for the info on the Maine coast. We had a good time up there,
but didn't get a chance to fish too much.

Sure enough, people were catching mackeral off the Pemiquid Pier,
and Popham Beach (by the fort) was lined with surfcasters. I was
able to fish Popham for an hour or so during the incoming tide,
but like everyone else there at the time, did not have any luck.
(except for a few small mackeral)

    Thanks again, Don Mac
