747.0. "HOPKINTON TOURNEY TIME!!" by VAX4::TOMAS (Joe) Wed Jun 01 1988 11:43

I guess it's time for me to organize another of my FAMOUS tournaments.

PLACE: HOPKINTON LAKE (aka Stumpfield), HOPKINTON, NH
WHEN : SATURDAY, JULY 16, 1988
TIME : NOON - 8 PM
EVENT: 2-MAN TEAM EVENT

I'll post the rules later, but they're pretty much the same as we've always

will also be posted in a later reply.

There's plenty of time to plan for this one, so write it on your calendar
and BE THERE!! Those of you that made it to last year's event should remember
the fun time we had! The infamous LEGEND may even show up for this one!

    Bring it to Mass.
747.3VAX4::TOMASJoeFri Jun 03 1988 09:279
Naw....this is a NH event, however, anyone is welcome. Quite a few guys
from MASS showed up last year (RR, BB, and others) and I'm sure if you ask
them, they'll tell you it was a good time, lots of laughs, and although no
real hawgs were caught, the place has some amazing structure and potential
for real big ones! In fact, I nailed a 6-7lber in there Sunday nite.

So what's the scoop?? No one's interested?

YO, Nightcrawler...ya better believe that you could blow out your lower unit
in this place! But not to worry...just BE THERE!

For those of you that have forgotten, note # 369 discusses last year's
tourney at Hopkinton (all 175 replies!!). Following is a description of
Hopkinton Lake and directions:

Hopkinton Lake is a *V*E*R*Y interesting lake...lots of structure...
weeds, pads, logs, underwater roadbeds, dropoffs (like 5' to 20'
just like that!), channels, rocks, bridge abutments, and...oh
yeah...stumps...stumps...and more stumps! A proverbial bass paradise!

The launch ramp is concrete and in pretty good shape...no problems
launching a metal-flake monster. It's also an ideal place for canoes!

                         -< LET'S SEE MORE ENTRIES!!! >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although there seems to be a little slow getting people to register
for this event, the list is still growing. I'll update it in a
    couple of days.

Rules will be about the same as they have in the past...simple.

    * 10 bass/boat limit
    * 10" min. size
    * "Catch 'n Release"

    * Entry fees: $10 per boat - Total Weight Pool
                   $ 5 per boat  - Hawg Pool

Because I don't expect a HUGE turnout, the pot won't be real large,
therefore, I propose that WINNING TEAM TAKES ALL for the total weight
category rather than dividing it up into 2nd and 3rd places. The
HAWG POOL goes to the boat with the largest fish. It's up to the
partners to decide to split that pool or whether the person catching
the hawg walks away with it.

Now, for the directions...

Assuming you live south of Concord, NH, travel north up Rt 93 towards
Concord. Take the Rt 89 north exit off Rt 93. Take exit #5 off Rt 89
(actually, the highway forks at this point and exit 5 is to the left).
About 1 mile after exiting off 89, you'll cross a bridge that goes over
Hopkinton Lake (often referred to as Stumpfield Lake/Pond). Slow down
when you hit the bridge and take the first right after the bridge. Go
down that road to the end (just a short, bumpy road) and take a LEFT.
That takes you to the launch ramp...you can't miss it.

    latter date.

You guys were beginning to worry me a little. Here's good ole Holeshot
puttin' together another one of his world-renowned tourneys and no one's
signing up. Was my Australian bush hat that bad??

Things are starting to look up as the team of RR/TBDW are signing up once
again. Let's hope the RR can keep TBDW from wimping out this time.

Hey BDW...I'm real sorry to hear about your loss. The way I look at it, you
can steal my wife...but DON'T TOUCH MY TACKLE!! Anyways, if you'd like, my
son has a Zebco 202 that you can borrow for the tourney. Let me know early
cuz he wants to rent it out.

Like last year, Bassin Bob is moaning that he'll t-r-y to make it but he's
got soooo many tournies and his fiance is gonna start complaining. Hey Bob,
multiply that grief by 20 years and you'll know what I go through!
(psssst...I got a hot tip for ya, Bob...a new, H-O-T color this year...
pink & chatreuse firetails!!)

I just got word from R/O that he can't make it on the 16th. Something about
helping his brother move....hmmmm... a likely story. Anyway, my new partner
will be announced in the future. Maybe I'll take my 12 year-old son and
REALLY show you guys up!!

Anyways, here's the latest entries:

"HoleShot Joe" & TBD
"Bassin Bob" Puisheys & Shaun Scott
DonMac & TBD
"Lavender Jack" Hagerty & "Juicy Brucey" Sheridan
Ranger Ron & The Back Deck Whizzer (oops...WIZARD)
Jack "Bass" Brickley

The list is growing, but let's get some more entries!

YO, Worm...howsabout making it OFFICIAL??

And how about Dilsworth and the Ringer?

... and will the Legend finally make his return?? Stay tuned...

    Ok...If no one minds a 1st timer to tourney's....

    I'd like to enter,with my partner..."Frog-catcher"...

    I's The Thing-Fish..

    Now...I need to know...

    - cost of 1 day permit non resident N.H.?

    - How'm I supposed to keep bass alive in a canoe?? that is if we catch
    any.... cooler w/ O-tabs?

    - Is this all artificial, or is live bait ok?

I always have released them right from the hook so I never really
    gave it much thought...

    					Thing-Fish
747.18FEISTY::TOMASJoeTue Jun 07 1988 15:5022
Thing-Fish and Frog-Catcher, huh? OK...if you say so.

YES...first-timers are more than welcome. We'd be happy to take your $$!

I'm not sure what the non-resident fees are for a 3-day license, but it
shouldn't ne too much. Maybe someon else has a rule book handy and can
answer that for you. You should be able to pick up a license at most any
good tackle store or K-Mart in N.H.

The tourney is "catch & release" so a cooler is required. O-tabs will help,
or simply a change of water every 1/2 - 1 hour should work fine.

As with all of our tourneys, no live bait is allowed. Strictly artificials.

Let's see some more entries and to make the 3rd ANNUAL HOPKINTON TOURNEY a
big success.

I'll be out in Palo Alto on Thursday and Friday, so I'll update the entry
list next Monday.

could delay the tourney until 2:00 because I'm going to be bringing
my girlfriends son to the derby and I don't want to lose out on
any time at the tourney. Well it's just a thought! there might be
other people who might want to do both.

But anyways plan on me to be there, I'm not sure who my partner

Getting swamped shouldn't present a problem. All canoes and smaller boats
will start after the larger boats have left. There's really very little
room for the larger boats to "open up" in this lake, so the waves and wakes
shouldn't be of concern. (Of course, Ray "Tommy Cod" Dodier may disagree!)
Obviously, common courtesy should prevail when passing smaller boats at any
time.

In any event, we all launch from the same place ... and we all land at the
same place. That minimizes any complaints.

Ok...so Don Mac & "SpinnerBait" Dilsworth are teaming up. (Sorry Keith, no
handicaps just cuz ya got DM for a partner!)

Ok... several people have indicated a desire to take their kids to the
MKO derby which would conflict with a noontime start of our tourney.

Are there any objections to pushing our start time to 2:00 PM and run until
9 or 10 PM ?? That should give those folks enough time to get to Hopkinton.

Unless we get more than 15 teams (i.e $300 pool), I think we'll make it
REAL simple...WINNERS TAKE ALL!

If we get more than 15 teams so that the pot can be reasonably split,
then we may do a 60% - 25% - 15% split, or something like that.

Then, of course, there's the HAWG POOL....

Ok folks, here's the latest list of teams:

"HoleShot Joe" & Paul Hojlo
DonMac & Keith "SpinnerBait" Dilsworth
"Lavender Jack" Hagerty & "Juicy Brucey" Sheridan
Ranger Ron & The Back Deck Whizzer (oops...WIZARD)
Jack "Bass" Brickley & TBD
Ray "One-Man-Band" Desrosiers & TBD
"Thing-Fish" Lange & "Frog-Catcher"
"Bass-0-matic" Vachon & TBD
Andy "Clutch" Demers & TBD

DIRECTIONS TO HOPKINTON LAKE:

Assuming you live south of Concord, NH, travel north up Rt 93 towards
Concord. Take the Rt 89 north exit off Rt 93. Take exit #5 of Rt 89
(actually, the highway forks at this point and exit 5 is to the left).
About 1.5 mile after exiting off 89, you'll cross a bridge that goes over
Hopkinton Lake (often referred to as Stumpfield Lake/Pond). Slow down
when you hit the bridge and take the first right after the bridge. Go
down that road to the end (just a short, bumpy road) and take a LEFT.
That takes you to the launch ramp...you can't miss it.

The "OFFICIAL" RULES:

* Entry fees: $20 per 2 person team
$ 3 per person - Hawg Pool (optional)

Although the turnout looks pretty good, I propose that the WINNING TEAM
TAKES ALL for the total weight category rather than dividing it up into 2nd
and 3rd places. The HAWG POOL goes to the person with the largest bass.
It's up to the partners to decide to split that pool or whether the person
catching the hawg walks away with the lunker pot.

Rules will be about the same as they have in the past...simple.

    * 10 bass/boat limit  (5 each)
    * 12" minimum size
    * "Catch 'n Release" - no penalty for dead fish but try to keep
       them alive.
    * 50 Yard proximity rule - i.e. remain at least 50 yards away from
      other boats in an area
    * NO live bait - artificial lures ONLY
    * NO trolling
    * NO more than ONE line/person in the water
    * Start time is 2:00 PM SHARP!
    * Finish time is 10:00 PM SHARP!

There's a vicious rumor that the infamous Legend may make an appearance.
Now let's see...last year he broke his motor mount at Hopkinton and almost
capsized, and at Monomonac he couldn't start the motor. Anyone care to
guess what might befall this insiduous character should he have the gonads
to show up??

Maybe we ought to make a contest of it! The person that guesses correctly
wins...

Well....only a few more days till our 3rd Annual Hopkinton Tourney.
I'm a little disappointed that we still only have 9 teams registered. What
happened to the spirit of competition? Just because Bassin Bob wimped out
doesn't mean the rest of you have to!

C'mon folks...let's get with it!

BTW...rumors of LegendMania II still persist. I haven't seen Mr. Waters
lately, but the last I heard he was reinforcing his motor mount with
construction-grade 2x6's. I also heard he plans to attach a 20' leash to
his canoe so that it doesn't accidentally drift away from shore.

I seriously doubt that Mr. Mouth will make an appearance, though. Afterall,
the embarassment of last year's Hopkinton and Monomonac tournies are still
deeply in his mind. I'm sure a third fiasco would simply be too much for
him bear ... he'd definitely go over the "deep-end"!

I believe the non-res license for the year is around $25. not sure
what the 1 day or 3 day jobs run. And I'd reccomend getting one,
the warden was checking license both Saturday and Sunday at hopkington.

BTW, for you canoeists, our club tourny on Saturday afternoon/evening
was won by a Mike "the ringer" Hayward... He normally fishes from
Keith's Ranger, but decided to go for it in his canoe... and won...
(btw Keith came in a close second).

I have finally received an account that I can access the notesfiles

As a newcomer to DEC and the Fishing Notes file, I cannot think

    and I'll have a NON-DEC partner.

I have to register my boat in NH (I live in Mass.), so that's
the only thing that would stop me from participating.

Looking forward to participating in the Fishing Notesfile

Time is getting short! It looks like we've had one team withdraw, but it
also looks like a couple of new entries. It should be a great time. The
long-range forecasts sound good and the fishing should be great! Even Doug
Hannon's Lunar Calendar says it's prime.

Hey Don, don't bother with your cooler. I'm fishing this one on the back
deck my partners new BassTracker V17. It's got a built-in livewell.

There's still plenty of time to register! And if you're a non-noter, just
show up.

Anyone wanna make bets on whether there will be a LegendMania II ??? That
sleezeball is in d-e-ep trouble if he shows up! What more could possibly
happen to him?

	- his Zebco 202 reel finally fails after 20 years?
	- he forgets his tackle box?
	- he brings his tackle box but forgets to fill it?
	- he falls of the bridge trying to hang a sign?
	- his canoe drifts off (again) but nobody gets it for him?
	- he dies from an overdose of fish-formula on his steak?
	- he pulls & pulls & pulls to start his motor only to realize
	  he's got an electric?

See y'all there!

Just as we all suspected, the rumors of a LegendMania II were hogwash! It's
now quite obvious that the Legend is quite paranoid about a repeat
performance of what happened at either the Hopkinton or Monomonac tournies.
All I can say is ...

			THE LEGEND IS H-I-S-T-O-R-Y !!

747.60Our Winning WayVAX4::TOMASJoeMon Jul 18 1988 14:5744
Fishing is a "learning" experience. No matter how good you are, there's
ALWAYS something new you can learn. I always make it a point to ask those
that do well after a tourney what it was they did to have been so successful.
Obviously, my reasoning is to learn...what patterns they chose, why they
chose those patterns, what conditions existed, etc, etc...

Unfortunately, not all tourney winners are willing to share this information
as they feel they might give up their "winning" secrets. It makes it
difficult for us "novices" to learn so that perhaps some day we can be good
enough to give them some real competition.

In any event, I'd like to share my "secrets to success" at the Hopkinton
tourney to those of you who would like to learn.

Unlike the vast majority of you who went down into the shallows and stumps,
my partner and I stayed totally away. We concentrated on the isolated weed
pads in deeper water (6-20') and drop-offs. Those of you that went into the
stumps passed right over an old roadbed that was only 2' deep. Did you
notice the drop-off on either side of the roadbed? I took one fish right
off an old underwater culvert after everyone passed over it.

There's no question that the fish were scattered. We did not take more than
one fish from any area, but for the most part, they all came from deeper
structure. With the exception of my partner's lunker which he took on a
topwater bait around 9:30PM and one I took on a spinnerbait, the rest came
on worms fished r-e-a-l s-l-o-w. My partner, Paul, calles it "dead
worming it." But ALL of the fish we caught, including the "lunker" came from
either deeper water or from places right next to deep water drop-offs.

Why did we stay out of the shallows and stumps?

	1. Unusually warm water conditions. We looked for structure that
provided shade (pad beds) near deeper water (i.e. cooler water).

	2. Heavy fishing pressure down in the stumps (i.e. the rest of YOU!)

	3. We didn't want to hassle with getting stranded on stumps like
	   RR and TBDW did!

Happy Bassin!

First of all, I must say I had a G*R*E*A*T time at the Tourney !!
(Even though My team was the only team totally skunked !!)

I have to agree with .60 I made it a point to ask around what the
Hot bait was too, and to my Surprise, it was the SAME as I was using!

Not knowing the lake at all, I tried to readon as to where the fish
might be. Because of the warm water, I too was looking into the
Deeper water. However, I thought the deepest part of the lake
was the channel BETWEEN the two main parts of the lake. After all,
It was the only place That the boats could be opened up at all.

My biggest mistake in planning where to fish, is noticing that My
boat was the ONLY boat in the area. Since Most/all you other guys
had fished Hopkinton before, I should have noticed earlier.

I did venture out into the stumps for a short time, but found that
the water seemed awefully shallow and the stumps too uniform to
pick out any notable spots to work.

The event was a very Humbling experience for me and a shot to that
ever vulnerable "Fishing Ego". I learned some new tricks for bass
fishing in general and a LOT about tournament fishing. Again, I
had a great time, and it was nice to meets the rest of you
fish-a-holics. Congratulations to Holeshot and Paul, a job well
done, and thanks for sharing the info. All I can say is that
I need more ..... PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE !!

      Thanks Joe!!!

It's Great to see people share information after a tourney.
I get sick of hearing these answers:

    	Q. What did yo catch them on?
    	A. My Rod!

    	Q. Where did you catch them??
    	A. In the Lake!

I am all for telling all after a tournament. Our club usually
discusses all the catches after a tournament, including patterns,
    colors, etc. It benifits everyone!

Thanks Joe for a job well done!! And Gerry wants to thank you for
making him think that he won the tourney before you pulled you bass
out for the weigh in. We were also using the worm for bait and had
great luck in the pads than made the mistake of going into the stumps
    and only caught one there.

I felt real bad for the dead fish but we managed to give them to
Gerry's brother who loves bass so at least they were put to good
use. I guess I have to learn to use my LIVE well a little better.
If anyone has any tips on this I would appreciate it. That was the
first time I really used it (as you can tell!)

Well I can't wait till the next one and I had a great time!!

Yea, thanks for sharing that with everyone Joe. Now next year I
can have the stumps all to myself!! Just kidding, you guys obviously
did the right thing, the bass were just not turned on in the stumps.

I've spent alot of time fishing Hopington, and have caught alot
of fish, including many real nice ones (including my mount). But,
to my detriment, I have spent very little time fishing sections other
than the stumps (they just look SO good!), so when they didn't produce
we didn't produce (not enough anyway).

You and Paul obviously were a little more versatile than most of
us and were able to adapt to situation, rather than going to the
obvious structure, as many of us tend to do.
