743.0. "One for the Wall" by CASV05::PRESTON (Curious George in the Temple of Doom) Thu May 26 1988 16:43

What's the best way to handle a fish when you want to have it mounted?
I have heard different things; put it in a plastic bag, wrap it
in newspaper, etc. I know it ought to go in the deep freeze for
a while, first, but what else? I don't want to ruin a good lunker
    for the wall...

    Thanks,

Ed (who'll be at Winni next week, fishing.... and fishing...)

I'D BE TEMPTED TO WRAP IT LOOSELY IN NEWSPAPER, AND SEAL OFF
BOTH ENDS SO FREEZER BURN WON'T OCCUR. IF YOU WRAP IT TO TIGHT
THE PAPER MAY FREEZE TO THE FISH AND MAKE THINGS WORSE.
HOPE THIS HELPED. GOOD LUCK, AND LEAVE A COUPLE BIG ONES FOR ME.

When I went out to the "BIG O" last year and caught a 22 lb King,
I told the captain that it was going to be mounted. He went into
the cabin and brought out a can of "Boraxo" and wiped it all over
the fish. I questioned what he was doing. His reply "Boraxo has
a chemical that makes up embalming fluid in it and it preserves
the colors of the fish so the taxidermist gets the true look of
the fish" and he then put it in a plastic garbage bag. When I got
it back at the Centrum Show it looked just like the pictures. Boy
does it look nice on my wall, can't wait until I go back in 8/88.

A photo helps the taxi guy make it look as it was when caught!.

    Wildlife creations recomends:

Tightly wrap FROZEN fish in 2" to 3" newspaper, put in plastic bag.
Pack ib box with 2" to 3" more newspaper.

I followed BassPro's (Wild Life Creation) directions and it worked
fine. Check out note 151.* on taxidermy.

My uncle just got back from the "BIG O", he told me they did pretty
good. All species except for Landlock & King Salmon. The 2 big ones
that are on there way to be mounted are 12lb Brown, and get this
one a 21lb Steelhead. When that fish was caught the whole lake was
buzzing on the radio's, they said one that size hadn't been caught
out of the lake in 2 years.
