731.0. "Looking for graphite prop" by FRSBEE::DLANDRY () Fri May 20 1988 11:02

I recently read an advertisement for Graphite props. but I read
so many different bass/fishing mags that I can't find the ad again.

Now that I trashed my prop I'd like to try one of these graphite
    (cheaper) props.

Has anyone else seen this ad?

Thanks in advance for any info, Dave

Dave,
I haven't seen the add you talk about, but many of the Marine (boating)
catalogs have the Graphite Props listed (Overton's is one - call 1-800-334-6541)
As I recall though from the old boats notes file, those people who had tried the
graphite composition props were VERY disappointed in what they got for their
money...

Bliss in woburn has compsite props. They look like a nice spare
but not what I would run all the time.

Gander Mountain spring/summer catalog on page 65 has them. They
range in price from $30 - $58. If you tell me the year, make, and
size of your motor I'll give you an exact price and the order #.
You can call Gander Mountain 24hrs a day, 7 days a week at
1-800-558-9410. The brand name is Comprop.

These props flex under use. They claim a flex from 21 pitch
to 17 pitch on stern drives and 19 to 17 pitch change on mid-range
outboards. This supposedly makes them a combination power/cruise/speed
prop. During a high speed hit the blades are designed to shear leaving
stubs that are ample to get you back in. This is supposed to reduce
drive train stress if you hit something (again:-).

Has anyone tried these on a stern drive. the pitch change sounds
too good to be true. At the price I don't care if the blades shear
they cost about the same as rebuilding a prop. My stainless cost
    me $85 the last time.

This subject gives me the shakes and cold sweats. Lets not talk
    of boat damage anymore.

    Yo Crawler -
    Lavender here.
Ive hit my lover unit a couple of times last year. Twice due to
real low water. I was lucky. Outside of some deep scratches......
Thought I was going to die...
Tell me (I wont mention it to anyone else - and everyone else Ill
ask not to read your reply - right fella's?) what it is costing
you. Include the spiritual and mental as well. Did your transom or
boat get damaged? Or just the engine. All back together?

This being the 2nd year owning the boat (ever) Im getting even
more daring - and hopefully capable of launching and keeping it
off the 'structure' - so to speak. I wonder what Ill get into.
Hmmmmm... I should be even more careful?? Like Bass fishing is 'going
in harms way' - where have I heard that before?? I loved to invest
in stainless prop - but it seems like its just a matter of time
    ......

The way things are going, I think I'm getting more cautious with
experience. I hit a rock in the river yesterday and took a healthy
chunk out of the skeg... no prop damage this time. If you're gonna
talk about the $$$, how about itemizing ... that way I can see how
reckless I can afford to be.

one word of caution...these props are only good for speeds up to
35 or miles per hour. Don't put them on a big engine or they will
    tear up your lower unit!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ranger Ron (who looked into these closely)

YO, OK Lavender..... but only because you promised nobody else will
read this. The entire lower end was replaced to the tune of $1077.80.
Dare to be daring. This encludes the STAINLESS PROP I decided to
go with so as to get out of that holeshot quicker to hit rocks faster!
Thank some deity for insurance. I had 100 dollar deductable.
I am still getting up the courage to go back to Webster Lake.....

65mph, That should do another good job on the lowerunit when you hit
one of the VERY FEW submerged rocks in Whitehall.

    YO Rich,
It was sick. But it had to be done. You know the narrow
channel that runs through it with all the structure? We're talkin
full thottle and then a 360' around the island and back through
again. I went through 27gallons of gas. My merc is now well broken
in and purring like a kitten.
I must have been mad! By the way, several 5 and 6 pound
Bass were taken at the tourney. They were not in my livewell tho...

Its been a couple of years since I'v been there, but as I remember that
channel is a little shallow in some spots. But you were probably
going so fast only the prop was in the water. There are a lot of
nice fish in there, BIG pike too. Soooooo did you get any in the
boat, or just play Speed Racer of the water ways.

    YO RICH,
Ya, thats the spot. Yes got some in the boat but
not enough to place. The racing was after the tourney. Oddly, several
fish that I measured on the water with the KEEPER COUNTER that I had
doubts about, that looked fine by 1/4" or more, were shorties at weigh
in. Very embarrassing! I guess fear shrunk them down. They did not
appear overly relaxed...HA HA. BDW told me to step on em' prior
to weigh in once. Perhaps it's good advise!

YO, Nitecrawla...

Ya measure from the tip o' the tail to the tip o' the mouth....

NOT from the tip o' the tail to the tip o' the stomach hanging outta the
mouth!!

I would never suggest such a thing....

At least that's what I heard somewhere. I never said it

Fred? said to squash them down with heavy Red Wing work boots.
Naturally I was appalled at the idea and thought a large rolling
pin would work much better. An interesting form of relaxation...

I have a question about props. The prop on my motor is a little
loose. The nut is loose but it has a cotter pin through it which
keeps it on and from loosening any further. Should this nut be tight?
Do you tighten it and then back off half a turn or something such as
    trailer bearings? Thank you.
