Joe
All sorts!
My main interest is in carp fishing and over here that entails
concocting all sorts of "artificial" baits e.g. BOILIES etc.
but not wishing to make this forum too biassed I would suggest
that any kind of bait (i.e. dead, alive, natural, unnatural or
downright perverse!) might be worth a mention.
ps do you happen to know anything about "process catfish baits"?

| YO U.K.!
I like corn for carp. As far as procedded baits there
are many. BLOODBAITS are great for cats and carp. The more sickening
the better.
I read about something in the U.K. a ways back about "GLOW
WORMS" As I understand it they are live grub like creatures that
are actually of various flourecent colors! WOW! Whats the story
on these hummers?
cheers,

Everything I've read and heard says that Carp won't strike an
unflavored artificial lure (piece of metal/plastic/wood) but yesterday
on the Conn. river, I saw what looked like a decent sized carp (between
4 and 8 pounds seen from 30 feet away) caught on a shad dart (lead
jig).

Hello DC. I know that you use live and dead shiners for
Zander or Pike as called in the US.Do you use any artificials
on them??? I like to use Zara Spooks and large rebels.
Do you have any information on Quick strike rigs, how to
make them, are they sold in stores??

729.11 | quike striking for beginners | VIDEO::LEVESQUE | | Mon May 23 1988 14:07 | 30 |
| re .10
I don't know of any stores that sell ready-made quick strike rigs
but they are easy enough to make yourself. Step one- learn how to
snell a hook. Practice this a few times.
1. Snell a small treble hook on about 2 ft of leader material, leaving
about 10-12 inches on the tag end. (the end you pull on to tighten
the snell)
2. Snell a second treble hook on the tag end of the first. Make
sure not to leave too much slack between each hook. The proper amount
is determined by the size of the bait. The hooks should be positioned
so that the bait can be hooked in the head with the first hook and
in the side around the vent with the second. Proper length between
hooks is critical with this rig. Too much slack between the hooks
on a rigged bait and the trailing hook becomes far less effective.
Too little and the bait spins (turns off most gamefish.)
Set the hook on the pickup. This prevents a large, toothy critter
from swallowing this mess and allows for a clean release. This rig
is against the law in New Hampshire on all lake trout and salmon
lakes (at least). Maybe its against the law totally. I don't know
for sure. Any help? I used this rig a few weeks ago on smelt while
trying to bag my first ladlocked salmon. The warden was quite
displeased. I didn't get fined (I guess he figured that anyone willing
to freeze their *ss off for five hours didn't need more than a stern
warning.) Didn't have any luck anyway.

729.14 | Mallow Yallow | MODEL::DOWNING | | Thu May 26 1988 09:56 | 20 |
| Look for products with names like "Mini-Marshmallows" in the store.
The mallows are about 3/4 inch cubes. I usually just use white ones,
but they'll soak up just about any flavor you want to use (including
fish scent). Fishing tackles stores sell colored ones in both corn
and cheese flavors.
What I do is thread one mallow onto a # 8 Eagle Claw bait hook and move
it about halfway up the shank. Then I attach a worm or salmon
egg to the hook just below the mallow. Use 4 lb test line and a
small split shot to get rig to bottom.
I think the reason it works so well is:
1. The mallow acts like a little float so that the bait is completely
visible instead of covered by mud.
2. It's sort of like the pellets that hatchery trout were reared
on.
Then again, it could be the position of Mars with respect to Venus!

729.15 | MALLOWS and Eggs | RGB::SWEENEY | | Tue May 31 1988 09:56 | 20 |
| Well I tried the MALLOW w/ Salmon eggs Sunday afternoon... And it
produced. 14" Rainbow... I figured I was in for a nice active evening
catching trout. Well I put the Mallow w/ Salmon eggs back in the
same spot. 5 mins. later I got a big strike. Sent my fishing pole
flying. Didn't hook em though. Got rebaited and put it back in the
same spot. I was ready this time. Got the strike and hooked the
sucker. Well he took in to shore to my left and under a clump of
trees. I tried pulling him out and he didn't fight. It felt like
I had a ton of weeds on there. The rod was almost bent in half but
no action. I figured I lost him and was hooked on a huge branch.
Well as I pulled this thing closer I could see about 10 feet away
a big black clump of what looked like weeds or a tree come out of
the water. I quickly looked again. It was a big ole snapping turtle
some 12+ inches across the shell. His head rose above water for
a second and then he took off to the middle of the stream and went
right under a submerged tree. I pulled some more until finally the
line broke. So trout aren't the only criters that like this MALLOW
Salmon egg combo... Thanks for the tip.

is that they seem to attract everything, including critters I'd
rather not catch.
Wonder if mackerel would go for 'em?

729.17 | No baloney !! | HEFTY::CUZZONES | down the hatch without a scratch | Tue May 31 1988 10:34 | 11 |

Has anyone tried cold cuts for trout? I promised my 7 year old
I'd take him fishing sunday and left the tackle box at home. All
I had was one hook already tied to the line. So we went to the
closest convenience store and ordered a 1/4# of baloney ( one thick
slice). In a couple of hours, we caught two 12" brookies (stocked)
and a half dozen creek chubs. The brookies were persistent ...
stripping the baloney from the hook time after time until my son
finally drove the hook home.

| I can top that easy. When was a little critter, about 10 or 11,
I used to want to go fishing all of the time (some things never
change). I read in a magazine that a good bait for trout when ice
fishing was soap. That's right, soap. (Not Ivory though, 'cause
it floats). The best was yellow soap. I don't remember the brand
but we caught a whole bunch of rainbows using scraps of soap I had
my mother save.
