727.0. "RADAR for Boats??? " by AD::GIBSON () Thu May 19 1988 13:24

    O.K so I said to the wife, If you insist that we get a RADAR unit
    for the boat then we will.... No she dosn't mean microwave.

    So lets har it from everyone who owns one or has had expereance
    with any particular Brand or Model...

    What are the plus's and minus of different types ie. Raster Scan
    Vs. L.C.D. Vs. C.R.T.

    In particuler I've a chance for a good deal on a Raytheon R-20.
    Has anyone used this type???

    So far my ony expereance is I once navigated a C-5 from Charlston
    to Dover , So the real Nav could play cards.... Not a lot to go
    on I would say.

    Lets hear it. as the wife wants one soon :)

    I told her this means we will need a Marlin tower also to mount
    the anntenna. Didn't get a lot of responce to that though???

Sure sure I've heard that one before. Just what did you have to
promise to get her to agree. My wife agrees that we should have
radar also but till I get a third job there is some question as
to the reality of it.
What is the price on the R20? How much more would the R21 cost
you?

727.2Vote for the R20GORT::JOYCEMon May 23 1988 08:5410
    I haven't used many different makes of radar, but I can't see
    how any of them can perform better than the R20. On a calm day
    any the gain set high, it will pick up lobster bouys and floating
    cans.

    Some people don't like Raytheon radars in rough weather, they
    claim that the sea clutter doesn't work right. The sea clutter
    seems to work for me.

727.3SWS reports on Raytheon radarsVIDEO::LEVESQUEMon May 23 1988 15:4520
     My subscription to Saltwater Sportsman has provided me with yet
    another exciting issue; lo and behold an article on radars. It's
    the June issue. The article is by Bob Stearns and focuses on the
    new multimode radars by Raytheon. It also has an adjunct concerning
    small boat radars. It contains the salient features of the R40,
    R41, R20 and R21 as well as pricing.

     You don't say how big your boat is but I'll guess it's in the low
    to mid 20's. For this size boat, the R20 @ $2,295 MSRP or the R21
    @ $3,295 would do the job nicely. The advantage to the R20 besides
    the $1K price difference is that the R20 is easier to mount on a
    small boat. Both the R20 and R21 have identical 24 mile ranges and
    interface with a LORAN that has NMEA 0182/0183 outputs. It seems
    that if_I_were_you, I'd go for the R20. It seems to be the best
    buy for the money.

     Hope you talk wifey into a marlin tower. The fishing is just getting
    good.

    	The best price I've seen for the R20 was $1795. Has anyone seen
    a better price?

    	Sorry if this reply is out of place.

    	I've got a Raytheon 2800 pathfinder Radar in *very* good
    	condition, for sale. I'm willing to take it out for test
    	runs if your interested. Send mail since I don't frequent
    	this notesfile.
