709.0. "Harpoons" by AD::GIBSON () Thu May 05 1988 13:10

I'd like to build a couple of harpoons before the summer rolls around.
Has anyone out there built there own or used any particluer type
    that they really like?

Whats the best material? Wood looks classy but what type to use?
I would prefer something I can cut locally ( not lignum viti)
          as hardwoods or softwoods better.

What about balance? should it be nose heavy? and whats the best
    length and weight?

I've heard that pikes were made with soft iron to bend on impact,
    Do harpoons require the same?

Line & Tips- Ganeging? Leader? Floats?

Any Comments from those who know???

                                  LETS HEAR IT!

                                                        Walt.

P.S. Techniques would be helpful also.

My harpoon is made of black iron gas pipe. I believe you "boat"
in the Newburyport area, right? Then try the big plumbing supply
store on Rt. 1 in Salsbury, between the bridge and the circle. Tell
them what you want, they sell most stuff you need. Pipe, end cap,
reducing nipple. Or check with one of the welding shops on the
same road, White's?, they also make up a bunch during the summer.

If you want wood, then I'd use closet pole for the stock. And yes
add a little lead to the tip for weight.

The purpose of the mighty harpoon is to pursuade a bluefin tuna
to come for a boat ride(Nantucket slieghride).
Tuna run upwards of 1000 lbs and were selling for more than $15.
per pound last sept. Thats a lot of SUSHI.

You can not use harpoons in freshwater except for CARP 50lbs+ fish
and ELL'S and Suckers. No spearfishing for trout !!!

I was trolling a chuck of shark meat on a 1200 lb test monal last
year when a Blue Fin Tuna the size of a V.W. hit. It snapped the
monal like it was silk, So next time I'm going to harpoon one with
HEAVY line( read lobster pot warp) attached to the spear.

Hopefully a few of the big ones will pay for the new boat or at
least help with the fuel and beer tab.

FYI and B.T.W. if you guys used gill nets, you'd catch more bass

    Re .5
Is Shark meat good Tuna Bait? I was planning on using mostly
Mackerel but Shark meat is real easy to come by. Ever use it
    handlining?

709.8Chum here little fishyAD::GIBSONFri May 06 1988 09:529
Sharks are a natural byproduct of chumming for Tuna. Go out to
stellwagon and see how many sharks are caught while trying to get
tuna. We cut them up and use them for chum also. it sure saves on
bait costs. I've only had that one grab the chuck of shark, but
    I'm sure more will.

P.S. Don't go swimming while your doing this. Did you see JAWS!

Besides sharks are fun to catch on rod and reel.
