708.1Fishing in Vegas???AISVAX::VILCANSThu May 05 1988 14:3726
	This was my trip last July with frontend and backend weekends
    in Vegas.

    1) Sedona, Arizona -- Oak Creek Canyon, this is an outstanding place
    to fish. It is a small creek that is loaded with trout. They are
    very difficult to catch, but the scenic back drops make it worthwhile.
    I recommend the Los Abrigados Hotel in Sedona, the creek is a short
    walk.

    2) Grand Canyon -- Colorado River, everyone will tell there are
    no fish down there, but these trout look like tanks. Again, tough
    to catch but worth the trip if you don't catch any thing. Stay at
    Bright Angel Trail and hike down. Yes, this is a tough trip. Rod
    and Reel had a recent article verifying that trout do exist down
    there.

    3) Zion National Park -- My brother and I did zero in on a few trout
    in the creek.

    4) Lake Powell -- The upper part of the Colorado, rent a boat and
    spend the night in the Canyon. At night the fishing jumping can
    actually keep you up with the noise bouncing off the 500 ft canyon
    walls. Minimal trout, but more conventional Lake type fish. You can travel
    light, its warm camping.

       If he's close to Vegas, how about Lake Meade? Is fishing
    allowed there?                                Denny
708.3< Lake Meade, indeed!!!>BUSY::WATTThu May 05 1988 15:4811
	Indeed, Lake Meade! It's close and it's supposed to be great fishing.
I've fished Lake Powell and places on the Colorado, and there's lots of
good fishing. I'd recommend a guide for Lake Meade because it includes
boat and services, and that lake is biggggg. Being an enpoundment of the
Colorado/Grand Canyon, it has deeeeeep water, as well as, warm water so it
accomodates everything from lake trout to ole bucketmouth. Some of the best
fishing I ever had was in Lake Powell about 150 miles further up the Colorado.
	Hope you do have a good time there.

    Meade indeed.......what the Texican said about being big is no lie.
    The lake has MORE shoreline than the entire West Coast of the US.

    Thats BIG.....Ranger Ron
708.5Lake Mead Specs...AISVAX::VILCANSFri May 06 1988 11:509

    	Lake Mead is 115 miles long with 550 miles of shoreline at low
    water and 822 miles when full. I'm sure people have caught fish
    out of Lake Mead, but I'm not one of them. I found Lake Mead big,
    hot, windy and dusty. Lake Powell, Sedona and the Grand Canyon section
    of the Colorado are the real gems in this area. However, they do
    require alot more driving than an hour jaunt to Lake Mead from Vegas.
