694.1 | Try these... | TOOK::SWEET | Capt. Codfish...Jeffries Ledge or Bust | Wed Apr 27 1988 09:27 | 10 |
| I bought mine from Ward Marine in Winthrop, they had the best price
on the Apelco DXL6100. Bliss in Woburn has some reasonable prices
but not usually the best. Most of the catalogues ship UPS (this
is how I got mine) and have the best price if you know what you
wnat. If you have a model I can check a couple of catalogues I have.
Another palce to try is Anchor Electronics in Hingham and Exeter
Marine Electronics in Essex (I bought my paper machine there).
Also Boats US in waltham but you must first become a member.

Bruce is usually pretty straight on his info but I got to say
something this time. STAY AWAY from Anchor Electronics. They are
a bunch of %%$#**&^__(+(*(&.
Better to pay a little more and get service when needed.
Add ELCO in the same area to the potential list.

I've delt with them before and they seem to be pretty good, In genral
the margin on electronics in so slim that only the very big(high
volume) electronics distributers can do well. Quick Nickels as
they say!

| I've heard alot of good about the apelco 6100 as far as accuracy
and durablity. This would be my first loran so I am a real novice
about which is suppose to be the best. I would like to keep within
the five to seven hundred dollar range. Thanks for all the help.

694.7 | #1 - Ease of use | SMURF::AMATO | | Thu Apr 28 1988 09:33 | 13 |

Capt Cod has the Apelco 6100, which is a nice and very accurate
unit. But it is not very user friendly towards the novice. I picked
up the Micrologic Explorer for $750 (I've seen it recently for as
low as $579 :-( ) and have been very pleased with it. The user
interface is nice and easy, and I've got no complaints about the
accuracy so far. I picked this one because of the ease of use.
My wife was able to use the loran the 1st time out. I've been out
with Capt Cod, and we still haven't been able to figure out the
apelco completely. I think the apelco is an excellent unit, but
just not one for a novice or someone interested in puttering around.

694.8 | Easy of use Vs. Functions | TOOK::SWEET | Capt. Codfish...Jeffries Ledge or Bust | Thu Apr 28 1988 09:49 | 11 |
| Joe is correct that the 6100 is not as easy to use as his micrologic.
But I think some of the confusion on my 6100 has been due to the
fact that I bought a very early 6100 and just recently got the
software upgraded. I have not really tested the unit out since the
weather has been so bad but when I do I will report my results.
Steve J, and others have this or the Raytheon equivalent and have
been satisfied. See the help on my 6100 note for details of my
problem. The main reason I bought the 6100 was the five line display
and the compact unit size, I paid about $680 at ward for it.

694.9 | Friendly schmendly | MTBLUE::OKERHOLM_PAU | | Thu Apr 28 1988 22:03 | 18 |
| Let me jump in in defense of the Apelco 6100. (Did I get the
model number right this time?) I bought my unit last year and I'll
admit it was a struggle to figure it out totally but user friendlyness
is only an issue in the beginning. After the learning process is
over the quality and reliability of the receiver is much more important
In this respect I think that you will find that the Apelco or Ratheon
units are superior to most, at least in their price range. I also
considered the Micrologic because of its friendly features but I had
read a report in Practical Sailor which stated that it lost signal
several times during their testing. I also heard a similar tale
from a user. I am not knocking any unit but I am saying that user
freindliness is a short term issue.
I attended a LORAN seminar this Winter and while we were discussing
what to look for in a unit, user freindliness was rated very low.
The ability to lock on to a weak signal and accuracy were rated
much higher.

| Gary, I have the 6100 and have had no problems except it kept locking
up when changing waypoints under full power. You might want to
consider installing a filter on your alternator to cut out the unwanted
noise. I have noticed a big difference since I added the filter.

694.11 | EZ-97, $499 | SEDJAR::JOYCE | | Fri Apr 29 1988 08:15 | 10 |
| I believe American Electronics (800-243-0264) in Wilmington N.C.
has the Sitex EZ 97 on sale, $499. In my opinion this is a best buy
right now. I used to have a EZ-7, and liked it very much.
Anyone that is looking for electronics I suggest you get a hold
of the marine trade paper, Boats and Harbors. Most of the big
suppliers run full page adds and prices do vary on the same piece
of equipment.

694.13 | To the defense :-) | SMURF::AMATO | | Mon May 02 1988 11:13 | 19 |
| Back to the defense of the Micrologic. i just finished bringing
my boat up to Danvers, MA from Niantic, Ct. The trip was about
140 miles. The only problem that I had with the micrologic, was
when I lost the signal one time. I was screwing around, and I think
that I did something stupid, in other words not the lorans fault.
besides that it performed flawlessly on trip, bringing me to each
and every waypoint on the $$$. The cross track indicator kept me
right on course the whole way. What is important to note is that
The loran had to change secondaries as I came into buzzards bay,
and I had no problems at all. I'm not putting the Apelco down.
I just think that for a first time user that it's a tough one to
figure out. The ease of use on the Micrologic is terrific, and
the easy readability (2 lines/screen, no searching to figure out
what its trying to tell me) as well as the ease of input makes this
a nice loran for the first time user. I agree that the apelco is
probably more accurate, but I'm just starting to use mine for cod
fishing up here. I'll let you know after this season ;-)!

$$ The loran had to change secondaries as I came into buzzards bay,
Joe,
The reason your LORAN had to change is Buzzard's Bay is really
the Primary area not a secondary. It is only secondary for those
north shore guys like your self.
Glad you made it SAFELY though.
