| I like the YANKEE FLEET as far as a party boat fishing excursion
goes. They leave out of Harwich Port. You can go for 4 or 8 hours.
I have done well each time catching some nice Tautog (blackfish).
I fished another out of Wellfleet on the Bay side but
it did not compare. The Captain was a loser and could not find fish.
Figure about 15 bucks for 4hrs.

night trips ?
Eight hours just doesn't do it for me. I went on one last year
with Chris's out at the end of Plum Island but he isn't doing them
this year. I know why he isn't doing them too. He doesn't have
sleeping accomodations and his first trip in May was a chilly
one. There were very few that came back for his second trip which
I was on. As a matter of fact, there were only 12 of us on a 78' boat.
That was real hard to take ;-)

| So far I've found out this:
Hiltons and Al Gauron don't do overnighters any more.
Smith and Gilmore and Atlantic Fishing fleet does for $70
Also S + G are booked until mid June and Atlantic until
early June on the overnighters.
S + G runs a 78' fiberglass hull (Lydia (sp?)) and Atlantic
a metal hull in the 90-100' length range (girl I spoke to wasn't
sure about size but said it was the Captain Red out of Newburyport).
S + G limits to 40 people and Atlantic to 50 on the overnight
trips.
I think I'm going to go for the Atlantic trip only because it's
running a little earlier.
Atlantic also does 2 day trips for $140. Maybe I'll give that
a try next year if this years trip turns out good.

Not sure if this is the correct note, but here goes.
Our group is planning a deep sea day on June 24th (Friday.)
We're going out of Newburyport (Captain's Fishing Parties) on
the "New" CAPTAIN'S LADY, a 78 footer. It is an all day affair
fishing for cod, haddock, etc... The price is $26.25 which includes
pole and bait. Leaves newburyport at 7:30 - returns around 4:30.
Talked to a guy named Chris. He said we could go with 30 people,
and so far I have heard from about 20 interested people. If
anyone would like to join us, send mail to me with your enet
address and phone and I'll let you know when we start collecting
for the trip.

Note 749.0 Charter Boat Recommendations? 1 reply
JUNIOR::WHITES 14 lines 1-JUN-1988 18:45
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm looking for recommendations for charter boats that could take
4 to 6 people out to the ledge about 33 miles out of Newburyport
to fish for Cod, Haddock, what have you. The name of the ledge we
were on escapes me, but we were jigging 18 oz. diamondback jigs
in about 300' water. We were surrounded by dolphins, whales, tuna,
and basking sharks the whole time we were out. We did this about
4 years ago, but the captain has since gone off to do other things.
We're looking for preferably a weekday leaving from the Mass/southern
NH coastline. Can anyone offer any recommendations?
Thanks,
Jack

685.13 | Not impressed with Atlantic Fishing Fleet | VICKI::DODIER | | Mon Jun 06 1988 09:20 | 34 |
| This is the first trip I ever went on where the boat ran out
of bait. By the time the end of the day came, all we had left was
the mushy scallop part of the clams that won't stay on the hook.
They brought 6 containers (1 gal. each ???) and needed to bring
10. They gave out the rods shortly after you got on the boat. This
must have been so the mates could sleep in because there was no
breakfast, you had to get your own bait and your own fish box. Maybe
it's me but any boat I've ever been on set up the bait and the fish
boxes to put your fish in before the first line hit the water. I
don't know why (since reservations were made a month in advance)
but one of the mates said they thought they did pretty good considering
the trip was thrown together at the last minute.
I can't say for sure but it appears the captains were playing
games. Towards the end they would put us into fish and when the
bait situation got critical they would move to a spot with little
or no action. This is the only explanation I can think of why you'd
move when at any given time, at least one out of every 5 people had
a fish on. BTW - the above "captains" was not a miss print. My friend
asked why there were 2 and they said the auto pilot was broken.
In spite of all this, my father, my friend and myself wound
up with about 60-70 lbs. of fillets, mostly cod. Big fish on the
boat was a 29 lb. cod. My father got a 12 lb. wolf fish and I got
a cusk about the same size.
It could have been worse I suppose but with a little more planning,
it could have been great. If I get time I'm going to see if I can
get in touch with the owner of Atlantic Fishing Fleet and see exactly
what the scoop was with that trip.
RAYJ
BTW - The name of the boat was Captain Red.

| re.14 steve , would you mind sharing with us what think the story
was. I would be interested in any theories.
I know this is of little help and you may be totally against
it but a great number of people like to bring there own bait
anyway.
I know you are spending a great deal of money and say that this
is unnessarry ( I agree ) but there are times that using your own
bait will give you an edge and might even put you into a pool
fish.
I will say that this should be buy choice and the skipper
should supply all bait necessarry but if you do decide
to take some of your own you can bring frozen sand eels,
frozen Herring, small frozen mackrel ( sp ), sand worms,
clams soaked in antiset ( sp ) and or native maine shrimp.
It is a bad rap when the skipper doesn't bring enough
bait..
I have been on some boats that don't supply any bait.
The Sonny W use to be that way.

685.20 | the story | SEDJAR::JOYCE | | Wed Jun 08 1988 11:24 | 28 |
| re. 14 etc.
I know the owner of AAF, his name is Brad Cook. I use to work once
in a while for AAF before Brad bought into the business. I'll check
with Brad for the real story, but he's my theory.
Brad sold one of his boats this winter. He had several reasons for
doing it, but a big reason was there is no water at low tide in
Rye harbor. He got tired of trying to keep two boats floating.
He had already made plans to run offshore trips this summer with
the boat he sold so he worked out a deal with Hiltons' Capt. Red.
The Capt. Red is a new boat to fishing, it was built to serve a
commuter boat in Boston Harbor. I guess the contract ended, so the
boat was pressed into fishing service. That may be where the trip
seemed to be thrown together. The real reason for two captains is
CG regs. If a trip is X hours long and/or X miles offshore, two
complete capt/crews are needed.
There is no reason to run out of bait. But having worked these trips
before, it is generally assumed that most people will be jigging.
The may be why they ran out.
I talked with Peter one of the captains, he said fishing was pretty
good, large cod etc.
I would suggest giving them an other try, it was their first trip
on a new (to fishing) boat.

| I just got off the phone with the owner and he said that he
thought they brought 15 tins of bait on that trip. I told him that
I only counted 6 containers. He did say that the boat should have
been set up by the mates (i.e. distribute bait and fish boxes) and
that this will be addressed and taken care of immediately. He also
verified about the recent change from commuter to fishing boat and
that there are a couple of things to work out.
In general, he was receptive to my concerns and assured me that
they will be taken care of. I will probably give them another try
next year and see how it works out.
As I said before, it was a good trip in spite of the problems.

Well, I went on the overnighter on the Yankee Capt. out of Glouster.
The weather was great. Calm seas 1-2 foot waves. The fishing wasn't
that great. I caught ten cod and a couple pollock. A friend of
mine caught about 20 cod, his largest 17 lb. The biggest on the
boat was 27 lbs. One haddock was caught about 15 lbs on the boat.
I was using 14 oz diamond jig with a couple of pink teasers. Comparing
bate fishing to jigging it was about equal. The boat went out to
Cashes Ledge and 280 feet of water. I had a good time, but the
fishing could of been alot better. Its time for the warm water
fish. I think I'll head to Port Judith next.

Well, 5 of us went to check out the Yankee Fleet last Sunday. Since
we didn't know anything about the Fleet and 2 of the 5 had never gone
deep sea fishing, we made the 1/2 day trip. I made reservations
Friday with Master Card and were informed we should arrive by 7:45
and that our tickets would be held up to 1 minuite before the boat
left. Upon arriving Sunday at 7:45, we were told they had accidentally
given away out tickets and that we would have to wait till 1 minute
before the boat left to see if anyone didn't show so. We were not
amused. I pointed to MY name with MY telephone number with MY Master
Card number 1/2 way down the list of people with reservations.
"Well," she said, "it would make it easier for me if I didn't have
to speak to the manager if some people don't show up and I give
you their tickets." Sounds like she's covering her ass for giving
away our tickets. It turned out enough people didn't show and we
did get on but we were the last one's on and there wasn't any room
on the lower deck so we road on top till it was fishing time.\
We didn't have our own gear so we rented on board. Since were were
on the top deck, we were one of the last to get rentals. By the
time they got to us, there weren't any rods jigged up and we had
to wait for them to get the broken ones put back together again.
But we were lucky, the last group of 3 people were told they did
NOT have any rods left. Don't know if they got their money back.
The 1/2 day trip made 4 stops. Where ever we could find a rail
was where we fished the entire time. The boat was too crowded and
every part of the rail was being used. The first stop brought up
dozens of dog fish. Since the lines were so densly packed, when
one was caught it tangles lines with them. People were not amused.
During rest of the day our side of the boat caught about a 1/2 dozen
code, 2 ells, and a red fish (not counting the sand sharks of course.)
Considering the number of people along the rails, we batted less than
a fish per person. My, I caught a total of 4 sharks, no keepers.
They crew on the Yankee Clipper were class A people. They were
very quick to help the dozens of tangled lines, re-jig the lost
weights and hooks, un-snag you from the bottom, untangle the many
reels that were used incorretly, and unhook your fish. They had
more than enough bait on board for 5 times any people that were
on board.
I don't know if I'd go back. I'd think about going for a whole
day since it might have less first timers on board.
Well, that was my experience on the Clipper.

don't waste your time. Half day trips should be viewed as boat
rides for the non fisherman. In july the dogs are thick as can
be. The best time for NE party boats is Apr, MAy and ealry June.
Start going in mid sept and oct in the fall. I do not think
any half day party boat in mid summer is good for much but a nice

685.29 | Bad trip on Yankee Fleet (Yankee Captain boat) | CIMNET::HANNAN | | Mon Jul 17 1989 12:20 | 25 |
| I took the Yankee Captain boat out o' Gloucester on Yankee Fleet
yesterday for Cod, etc, on the 7-4 trip. It was probably the
worst trip I've ever been on (except I won the pool between the
6 of my friends ;-)). I've been out on Yankee a lot before,
but always on the Yankee Pride boat and it was always a great trip.
The Yankee Captain was a big boat @ 100 feet. First, they confiscated
all the beer from the coolers. They are _very_ strict about bringing
your own beer now, so don't bother. Instead of tasty import, you have
cans o' bud and bud light (blech!) Things have changed. I guess someone
overdid it last year so they are enforcing the laws. Fishing was very
slow, the captain said it was due to a slack tide. (?) Lots of time
was spent going around in circles very slowly, so fishing time was cut
down, but it didn't make any difference. The crew and captain was
sarcastic but helpful. You don't need to hear sarcastic jokes when
the fishing is slow and then they fart around so much.
I'll never take Yankee Captain again, but I would take Yankee Pride
again. Just my opinion...
Fishing: jigs took very little, best bet was with bait, vey few dogfish
in sight. 2 Haddock were taken around 6-7 pounds.

Fishing equipment and bait must be supplied.

685.34 | A little bluefishing info | WAV13::GREENBERG | | Tue Jul 03 1990 11:00 | 38 |
| I don't have a lot of CURRENT info on party boat bluefishing, but there
does not seem to be a lot. Here's what little I know. Maybe it will
help:
1. There's a boat in Rye NH that goes out for blues at least at night.
I was on it a few years back and did well. I don't remember the name of
it.
2. The Yankee Fleet in Gloucester, I think, runs evening and night
bluefishing parties.
3. I think the Capt. George, Captains Fishing Parties, at the end of
Plum Island goes out for blues.
4. I have heard that the Sea Wife out of Marblehead also does some
bluefishing.
I doubt any of these boats would go to Stellwagon for blues, but they
often get them near their harbors. If you want to go to Stellwagon
(which is often an adventure where you can see whales and tuna putting
on a show), you probably will have to charter a boat. There are lots
around, but the guy I usually go with is out of Scituate.
It's a small boat -- a 24 footer -- and he takes a max of four
passengers. He adjusts his rates depending on the number of passengers.
He charges $300 for 4 people for 8 hours. It's less for fewer people.
His name is Pat Riley. His number is 617-545-9643. He will go out to
Stellwagon if the weather cooperates. If not, he often catches blues
outside of Scituate harbor and near the North River.
You can also check out the Boston Globe Charter Boat Directory which is
in the sports section on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Have fun. Now through September is the time to go.

Clipper Fleet (Salisbury) and Hilton's (Newburyport) run 1/2 day
blues trips, but I don't think that they start until mid July at the
earliest when the blues are closer to shore and Salisbury/Newburyport.
These 2 places are right across the river from each other, near the
mouth of the Merrimac River.
Usually the boats are crowded and it's hit or miss, but I did get
my first bluefish ever off Hilton's last year.
If you want to travel to Rhode Island, the Gail Frances out of
Pt Judith runs a night trip (6:30 p.m. - 2:00 a.m.) that I went on
last September and it was incredible non-stop action. I'd think
the action would start sooner the further south you go.
