684.0. "52 deg water, what bait?" by USADEC::DAY () Thu Apr 21 1988 13:57

I have 52 deg water in the pond, and I have tried
jigs, texrig worms, spinners.... fast slow... fish
formula... every thing. Last year at this time we
were catching good size fish last year at this time
and we are only catching an occasional one pounder this year.

Does anybody have a (non-live bait) suggestion for this water temp.
The reason I stress non-live bate is that I feel that a minno
held captive in one place or a worm in the same shape does not
require a lot of skill. Shiners and night cralers are great for
people who like to do it the easy way. ( my opinion )
I am open to almost anything that requires learning a new skill.
    But not live bait.

    					Thanks

684.1cold weather = cold water = slow bassingCASV05::PRESTONThu Apr 21 1988 14:4215
I don't know a lot about water temp, but I do know that 52 deg sounds
a bit on the cold side, and I've been hearing everybody complain
about the slow action this year due most likely to the weather keeping
    the fish deep and inactive.

I've caught two bass this year: a one pounder about 3 weeks ago
on a black jointed Jitterbug (believe it or not), and a 2 pounder
on a rubber worm about 2 weeks ago. Both of these guys represent
3-4 hours total fishing time, so it has been slow for me, anyway...

I say we should just be patient and wait for the weather to improve.

684.2Temperature, Bass, and TroutMODEL::DOWNINGThu Apr 21 1988 15:2110
Bass will be in low gear at 52 degrees. You're just not going to
catch many bass until the water warms up. My suggestion is to work
lures and jigs as slowly as possible and cover every square inch
of an area before moving on. This sounds tedious, but I've rarely
caught bass on fast-moving lures this early.

On the other hand, brookies, salmon, and lakers love 52 degrees
    and it's approaching
the comfort zone for other trout.

          Danny,
I've been having great success on Rapallas(sp). Last few times
out I have caught fish on them. From trout to bass and even some
perch! Last Friday my friend and I caught about 15 fish between
the two of us. This was in about two hours time. They wouldn't
hit anything else and I mean we tried everything! My buddie was
using a small perch imitation and I was using I guess you'd call
    it a shiner. Try it.

The trout have been quite active, I pulled out 2 withen an hour
last sunday, i would have stayed longer but that was enough to go
with steak and potatoes, another guy i was talking with had 3, and
he said it was slow compaired to saturday, i was using a spinner
with a rooster tail and the other dude was using a sm.gold spoon.
sounds good im going back out tonight.

I caught my one and only bass this year on a green fat-gitzit
with red specs. Not bad since I've only gone bass fishing once this
year. The fat gitzit had a 1/8 oz. jig head. This was also about
3 weeks ago when we had that warm spell.

You neglected to mention whether you were fishing for largemouth
or smallmouth bass. The smallmouths usually get active before the
largemouth (although both can be caught early in the year). If your
smallmouth fishing, the fat gitzit (like a tube-o-lure) will work.
Also, you may want to try trolling (forgive me Don for that dirty
"trolling" word :-) a brown or brown/orange rebel crayfish.

    Good luck.............RAYJ

I've had some good luck catching trout so far using a vibrex. So
far thou the best bass I've pulled out has been with shiners
but if you refuse to use live bait you'll have to wait!!!!

I don't know about other lakes, but my favorite lake was at
about 53 degrees yesterday morning. Caught a few on my favorite
lure, a #2 pounded silver willow leaf spinner bait with charteuse (sp),
blue, & white skirt fished SLOW with small rod pumps. 17 3/4" largemouth
at almost 4#. Also caught bass on Pig-n-jig, flippin-craw, and
rooster-tail Mepps. All fished SLOW. You can catch them on about
anything you use in the summer, excluding top-water stuff, if you
slow it down. Pike were ferocious, though!
