677.0. "ICE OUT ON WINNIPESAUKEE" by VENOM::HOUTZ () Thu Apr 14 1988 18:43

Yea, it's true. I took yesterday off, loaded the canoe on top of
the Blazer, drove to Winnipesaukee, AND LUCKED OUT!

The ice is gone from Winnipesaukee and the Salmon are hungry! I
boated 6 fish from about 13 inches (guessed) to 22 inches (measured)
and lost a few more before I got them to the Canoe. Ya' see, I
use a fly rod and streamers with no barbs, so you do lose a few
    when you're not paying attention.

There were quite a few other boats working the water and they all
seemed to be picking up fish. My best luck came with a Gray Ghost
pattern and trolled using a fast sinking line (actually a shooting
head system) at a fairly slow troll rate. The fish were really
skinny and apparently just now going on their feed. The water
temperature was a chilly 40 degrees, so we have several weeks of
great fishing to look forward to (45 degrees is optimum for surface
    feeding of landlocks).

Good luck to all of you salmon fishermen and let me know how you
    do.

677.1Can you give me a hint?OLDMIS::SYSTEMFri Apr 15 1988 08:3434
Glad to hear you had such luck!

I am still looking forward to the bass season really kicking in...
but in the meantime, I typically will fish for the cold water species
until the warm weather hit, ie.. beginning of spring and the beginning
    of fall.

I have a question though... please send me mail at SQM::FAUCHER
    if you can...

I have only fished WINNI twice and that was with a friend in a
16' Grumman... the place we went you more or less needed a boat
that size due to the water... I only have a 10' Johnboat, after
reading you mail about you having fished in a canoe... could you
tell me what area you fished in? I guess my question is :

Is there a good spot to fish for the people with the smaller boats
(sounds like you found one), if so, could you give me directions?

I am not that familiar with Winni and therefore would hate to make
the ride up there just to spend a few hours driving around looking
for waters that are good for a boat such as mine. Until I read your
note I had decided that I would not want to put my boat in Winni,
    but now maybe I can?

                   Any info/dir would be appreciated.

                                     take care,

                                                Perry F.

A canoe is a lot more stable than a jon boat is , I would be cautous
about taking a jon boat out into the main lake. It would be OK in
    a small protected cove though.
I do a conciderable amount of ocean canoeing and have run up to
2 miles offshore in a few trips from ipswitch to glouster and also
in the merrimac down in newburyport; but you wouldn't catch me in
a flat bottom boat doing it.

Be careful in 40deg water you only have a few minutes before
    hyperthermia will get you.

Look at spring time canoeists and notice the wet suits, We dont
    wear them for fasion.

I was talking to a friend yesterday who has a boat on the lake and
he said that the ice is gone in most areas. And the fish are hungry!!

                                           Good luck

Don't know the 'official' time, but it's been out... Keith could
probably tell you the exact day, he's been up there just about every
other day for the last few weeks!

Keith and I went up yesterday, I got 2 keepers, Keith got one.

Don Mac - who has now acquired a taste for blackened salmon - great
    stuff!

Yesterday Keith and I fished winni for a couple hours. Alton Bay had
maybe 200 yards of open water. Real crowded. Saw a couple shorts
    caught.

    Donmac,
I was up there yesterday too. There's a huge section of open
water out in the broads, from Smith Cove in Gilford way down
to Rattlesnake Island and over toward the Wolfboro side. The
boat was at home and I was viewing it from shore so I'm not
sure of the exact borders. I would expect that the wind and
sun this week should help to open things up quite a bit, and
if it's not all liquid by this weekend then surely by the
    following weekend.

Don, I too was up there yesterday. We launched at Aimes Farm.
Same deal, nothing but whitecaps and wind. We had to help out
a feller that took a dunken. He was zippin across the ice on
a hovercraft going from Rattlesnake Island to thje shore. He
hit the water full tilt and flipped it over. If he did not have
a lifejacket on, I'm sure his wife would now be attending to
his funeral. All and all, an interesting first time open water
trip to Winni for me. Only cost $15 to register my Ma. boat
    in N.H. :*)

I stopped by Ames Farm yesterday to inquire about their cabins.
(Noticed that there was quite a bit of open water out there!) Can
anyone comment about the quality of the cabins and the quality of
the fishing in that area of the lake? Thanks!

It's about that time again. Anybody have any reports. Must be
"some" open water up there. I'm more interested in the southern
part of the lake: Wolfeboro, Alton Bay area.
