666.0. "Loons" by PCCAD2::RICHARDJ () Fri Apr 08 1988 13:43

Last evening I went to a lecture by Paul Rezendez, on Loons. Paul
is Loon warden at Quabbin Res. and Wachusett Res. I would just
like to advise the fisherman in this note to take care not to
disturb these great birds, they are very sensitive to any kind
of pressure. They will leave their nest if you approach them, leaving
their young ones vulnerable, and sometimes accidentally killing them
as they flee. Just to let you know, between Quabbin and Wachusett
there where seven chicks born in 1986, only one survived, 1987
    three survived.
So please be careful for them, especially if your in a boat,
be on the look out for Loons nesting on small floating islands
that Paul put out on Quabbin.

    Thanks
    Jim

666.2Serious Notes Are O.K. TooBOSHOG::VARLEYMon Apr 11 1988 10:159
Normally the majority of my environmental concerns center around
acid rain type issues. However, I thought this one deserves a comment.
Most of us probably don't think about things like this - and we
really should ! I don't know how soon I'll be able to get to Quabbin
again, but when I do I'll try to be more aware of the wildlife.

    Sincerely (for a change),

    Bandit,

i for one am happy to see someone out there who is alittle more
interested in the outdoors then slinging fish tales and beer!

I don't belive that I every saw any loons in MA at all. When I
go fishing in Maine I see them all the time. The sounds that they
make are trully errrrie!! It's a cross between a baby crying and
    something out of this world.

    Thanks for the information,

Aside from the "larger" lakes in N.H. (i.e. Winnie, Squam, etc), two lakes
not far from where I live have loons...Bow Lake and Northwood Lake. I agree
that their call is eerie. Especially at night when it's quiet and it echos
off the mountains!

A beautiful bird...let's protect them!

I believe the point here is to NOT find the loons....
Thanks for telling everyone where to stay away from..

I like where this is going.

Since the replies to this note were getting out of hand I
deleted the ones that don't pertain to the base note. If
you have a problem with the way things are going in this
notes file you can contact me MSEE::KELLEY 261-3193 or
COLORS::MACINTYRE. The basic rules for those who have not
read them or choose to ignore them are in 1.10. Since I
feel the base note here is a matter of concern it will
stay. Lets try to keep things under controll in this note,
if you want to sling it then do it off line not here...!

    	Thanks for your cooperation...
