654.0. "FISH-88-PROJECT" by REGENT::BURBINE () Thu Mar 31 1988 12:35

Recall back in note 537 I started looking for some folks that
wanted to do some off-shore fishing according to what the season
was. Mostly we talked about Yellow Fin Tuna. Well time is getting
closer and we will include Sharks, Albacore and Bluefish. Unfortunately
till the water gets warmer they are not there. Let's hope that the
folks down the coast like in New Jersey and New York give us some
warning when the action starts up. I do still plan on taking off
Fridays and will attempt to organize from the list we had in note 537.
Replies to this one will be added. Probably 4 to 6 people per
trip will be ok. I definately am not in the charter business so
the only expense to anybody going will be actual running expenses
and bait for the day. Once we find out how much fuel costs this year
I can estimate actual costs. Wish I could afford to buy a fuel
monitoring system to measure actual flow as a function of RPM and
load. For a run to the dump we can guess somewhere around 150
gallons of fuel will be used. If we chunk maybe 40 pounds of bait.
Following is the list as I have it so far. Please let me know of
any corrections such as nodes ,spelling etc. Maybe 'Old Soul' will
let us know when the Tautog are biting off New Bedford and we could
fish for some of them. May 6 is the magic day for launching the 'ANZO'.
Pray for no rain this weekend so we can get the winter wraps of her.
As several others have mentioned in other notes there are other
boats also that could go along. That is super-more boats is
safer.

    Hello;
I have moved, I am no longer at LTN-2 I am know out in Hudson and
    my new node is NULL::Gibson.

This weekend I close on my new boat and will be picking it up weather
permiting on april 16th. Its in old Saybrook and I will make the
run up to Newburyport; If anyone has made this trip I welcme comments

I would like to mention somthing on chippin in for gas, bait, beer
or whatever. If you are not a C.G. licenced Capt. 6pack or more
heed caution. Do not accept any donations toward any expence until
you are safely back at the dock and every one is on terra-firma.

The C.G. regulations state that any contribution toward operating
a vessel shale constitute the use off said vessel to be ingaged
in commercial enterprise and the operator shall be liable for having
a licenced Capt. in control of vessel.

In other words you whould be responcible for any loss or injury
to passangers and your insurance would not pay because you were
operating a charter without a licence.

I am planning to get my Capt licence 6 Pack this year so I need
as much operating time as possible. Regs say 365 days at sea, I
am almost there but need a few more logs.

Anyway a good way to get around Expence is this.---Have everyone
agree that in case the Coasties Board you(I was boarded last summer)
NO ONE has given you any payment; Because they hav'nt.

ALL CONTRIBUTIONS will be welcome when the boat is returned from
the trip and everybodys safe. CASH ONLY!!!

We will have to get together to crew for each other. Where is you
boat berthed? and what is she called.

I run my boat out of Charlestown and would be interested in being
part of a fleet. That's Charlestown, RI. I normally try for
Yellow Fin and would be happy to share news with this "select bunch"
of ardent fishermen. I would not reccomend a trip without doing
a fair amount of up front scouting of hot spots, etc.

Even when the fish are all over the locals are reluctant to give
out any info about how and where the action is. LORAN points,
that is highly sensitive data. I wish the military kept their
    mouths as shut.
654.4harpoonsAD::GIBSONWed Apr 13 1988 13:4215
I have had this Idea mentioned to me by a few people and I was
woundering if any of you had tried it and what were the results,

The genral Idea is to have someone on the bow of the boat Harpoon
style with a Shotgun,Rifle or high powered handgun or Bow with fish
arrow. This seems plausible as I just recived the new Navy Arms
catalog and the have a high powered harpoon gun that would defintly
    do the job.

The question is do Tuna (bluefin) float for a while after they are
killed? If not I think I would cry seeing that much money sink .

     Comments?? Sugestions??

It would probably work but it is illegal. Harpoons are to be
hand thrown only. The fine for violation of Tuna fishing regulations
is $25,000 (not something to be taken lightly).

I am glad to see that harpoons other than hand thrown are illeagal
for tuna. It seems very unsporting and it would not take to long
for the tuna to the same way as the whales or worse. I fish because
I like (love) to. If I can catch something that helps defer the
cost of fishing then that is great, but I think as soon as you start
fishing with $$ in mind you take someting away from it.

654.12Big fih - little boatMTBLUE::OKERHOLM_PAUMon May 16 1988 09:1517
	Re .9>

How does one get a monster fish on board a small boat without a
gin pole or a Tuna door? Last summer I landed an 11 ft long Maco shark.
Based on what I could find out after the fact from pictures etc I guess
it went 750# to 900#. After about an hour of trying to get it on board I
gave up and ended up cutting slabs of meat off the thing as best I could
while it was still mostly outboard of the boat. This was all complicated
by the fact that it was getting dark and I was 25 miles from my mooring
and anxious to get home. I think my crew was about to mutiny also.
This year I thought that I might rig up a gin pole but I don't want
anything amateurish hanging off my boat which will detract from its value,
especially since its use will be so limited. Has anyone out there figured
out a solution to this problem, or does everyone just tow them home or bum
a hoist from a nearby boat?

    Paul,

I'm going to try using a couple of heavy duty come-a-longs. If
that doesn't work, I'm going to tie anything large outside for the
ride home. Of course this is all speculation at this point.
I went codfishing on stellwagon this past saturday. Good day of
fishing, and the big macks are here.

    Paul,

      Two ways to get'em home.

    1. Drag'em

    2. a block n tackle to help get as much of the fish in the boat
as you can. We had a rig that we used in conjuncton with a pot
hauler. We were able to boat sword fish up to 800lbs with it.
you run the tag end of the block and tackle around the pot hauler.
    Worked for us.

Good luck and hope you get plenty of chances to "invent a system".

654.15Use a Inflatable???AD::GIBSONTue May 17 1988 13:1313
What would be the problem with tieing a Bluefin onto the dive platform?

I can see the advantage of not having to lift it on board.

How about putting the fish in a rubber dingy? and towing it back.
This would work for smaller boats without the space for a large
fish, and the fish could be Iced down in the raft and covered with
a wet canvas to keep it cool.

I may give this last Idea a try myself. When I get a big Tuna this
    summer.

Ok everybody the first trip is on for the 8th of July. Plan is
find some sharks.
Now how do we decide on whom out of the list gets asked first
etc? I think the list below is in the order of answers to the
original note does anyone have a problem with that?
How is this
1. Take the top six on the list
2. anybody going moves to the bottom of the list
3. anybody not going stays at the top for the next week.
I gotta know about for sure by Tuesdays PM so we do not end up with
an empty boat.
Please send me mail on rex::burbine and I will post those going
as a reply to this note. I realize the 8th of July is still a
little time away but think now is the time to work out the bugs
ok?
norm

Rules:1. No BOOZE till we return to the dock, gas up and clean up.
      2. Leave the dock at 0700 return about 1630.

gallons, expenses includes lost boat tackle)
      4. Bring your own food and beverage
      5. Bring tackle if you want(if you do not have any use
         mine)

You guys are playing my tune/singing my song. I'm definitely interested
in getting together with you guys and catching sharks or tuna.
Sign me up. I can't go on the July 8th trip (serious possibility
of divorce), but I'll be able to go on a later trip. Also-
since I'm going sharking on July 2nd, I'll pay attention this time
and get some LORAN numbers for us. Maybe I'll even be able to weasel
a few extra numbers out of the Capt.

    Norm,

The 8th is bad for me. Just like the doc, if I go then I'll be
living in my cuddy cabin with my flying gaff for company. I'm in
the cuttyhunk marlin tourney the week after, that's why I can't
be there. By the way, the tourney has no entry fee. Just gotta
find a place to stay since cuttyhunk's filled up for the weekend.
I'm just gonna anchor somewhere to get my zzz's. The marlin fishing
will be at the dump. Norm, why don't you enter, it is free. Dredge
up some of the guys and meet me down there. There'll be 3 divisions
for prizes. Think about it and let me know. At the least I might
swing by on my way through the canal or on Sunday on my way home.

Hello Doctah,
Yes you may enlist and glad to have you along.
Don't let Tony see you trying to get his numbers or he may get a
little upset. What time of day do you leave the dock in Falmouth
when you fish with Capt Tollentino?
Also what does he charge for a day?

    Norm, Walt,

I was going to do the tourney, but all potential crew can't make
it! Capt squid's lame excuse was closing on a house? These guys'll
think up any excuse not to go fishing! Anyway, if I can scrape
someone up (that's all my boat can sleep), the poop is:

    Capt's meeting 6pm thurs night (7/14) for rules/regs/loran #'s
    Friday/Saturday tourney fishing
    Sunday come home

    There are 3 divisions
    	marlin tag and release
    	yellowfin
    	bluefin

I don't think that there's any cost to enter the tournament. But
he said something about $100/division. I think he was referring
to large fish pool. I'll find out more. The prizes are equipment.
100 boats had signed up, he figures that 60'll show. Sizes run
from a 20' Grady White center console, to a 65' hatteras (not a
center console). All slips are filled. Supposedly there's plenty
of room to just drop an anchor. I'm not sure of anything else at
this time. Oh yeah, its run by the Fisherman's Outfitter in Danvers
Mass, and being held at Cuttyhunk Island.
654.22when do we leave?WACKY3::COURSE3Tue Jun 21 1988 16:5017
    Re 654.20

     Great Norm!

Glad to be aboard. I'll grab the nummy nums when Tony is in the
tower. We left last year around 5:30 - 6:00 when we went ion august.
During the time after 5:30 and before 6:00, we procured fresh pogies
with a cast net. We finally reached our destination around 8:15-8:30.
This year it's gonna cost 6 bills for the boat. We'll probably tack
on 75 for the tip. Tony's a great guy, so I don't really want to
take advantage of him, but he's got the numbers. I, of course, will
NOT be publishing them in this file for general use. But whomever
I go with will be lucky enough to get them. What the heck, I'm going
on 3 trips with him this summer. I think that kind of cash deserves
    a few numbers, don't you?
