647.0. "Trout in Merrimack River" by SALEM::HART () Fri Mar 25 1988 08:32

       I read this mornings Manchester newspaper and there was and article
    about the N.H. fish + game dept. stocking the Merrimack river with
    a couple thousand trout. Some folks argued that the water was to
    dirty and the trout would not live. I tend to disagree as I caught
    a rainbow trout last may in the Merrimack just below the hooksett
    falls. The water there seems to be the same quality as the water
    below the Manchester dam, fairly clear and no smell to it. The
    only problem I noticed was the bass there all have some sort of
    parasite growing around their mouths. The things were small black
    round bumps spread along the bottom of the mouths in a line almost
    from gill to gill. They were enough for me to decide I didn't want
    to eat any of them. Anyway I hope they do stock the river it would
    mean trout fishing almost at my doorstep.

     Great idea Mark, I been doing lunch time fishin for a while and
    although I haven't caught anything yet I expect the warm weather
    to liven up the local bass in the ponds and lakes near the plant.
   I've been known to disapear from the plant on days when the fishin
   is good so let me know when your going to be around.

    Hi,

      I'm new to this notes file and just got my first-ever fishing
    license. It will give me an opportunity to spend more time with
    my boys...How is the Merrimack river as it gets down towards Litchfield
    and Hudson? I've seen a few guys out there, but not many.

647.6You never know what in Mcglicutts poolSALEM::HARTMon May 16 1988 14:3617

     Ooops !! messed up the last reply, sorry.

     I never have fished in the Merrimack south of Manchester due to
    the fact that the city dumps raw sewage in the river. I do know
    that people talk of big bass at the Nashua river mouth. There is
    a good trout river close by called the Souhegan. The best entry
    that i have found is in Amherst where it cuts thru a golf course.
      I suggest that you try different spots that may look good to you.
    Just because you don't see anyone fishing doesn't meen there aren't
    any fish.

      good luck
