598.1 | Conn lakes fishing | CADSE::JACKSON | | Wed Feb 10 1988 14:53 | 15 |
| I too am planning a trip to the Conn. Lakes. I plan to stay at
the Powder Horn Lodge on Back Lake. Where do you stay? When will
you be going? I plan to go the 1st or 2nd week of June. I am from
Mass and this is my first trip, and I am unaware of Salmon up
there. How big is the L. Francis? Back Lake is 355 acres. Powder
Horn rents boats for 19.00 dollars per day. What lures will you
use? If you would prefer mail or phone, that is acceptable, though
others may benefit from this conversation...
thanks

I go to the Connecticut Lakes in the spring and fall. Ice seems
to go out around the end of April. If you like to ruff it, you
can stay at Lake Francis State Park. They open up the first week
in May. I stayed there during Huricane Gloria. I now stay at
Timberland Lodge on "First" Connecticut Lake. It's about $19.00
a night per person. There phone number is 603-538-6613.
DonMac and I were going up with 4 other guys early in May. Now
DonMac is WIMPUN out and going south again. I guess the snow we
had up there last October was too much for him.
Seriously, if you go up there early in May the weather can be
very unpredictable. Two years ago we got up there and it was 32
deg. and very windy. The next morning it was 20 deg. with 40 mph
winds.

| I was planning on going up there during the first week in May.
Im still in school so I can't stay very long. I think I'll stay
at the State park but it depends on the weather.I stayed there this
summer. We had good luck right where the connecting river runs into
the lake.We caught the rainbows ,which ran from 16 to 21 inches,
on ultalight fishing poles using small gold mepps. We tried our luck
up the river with our fly rods but we got nothing.I got interested
in the salmon fishing when a man camping next to us told us the
size of the salmon he caught last fall. He said they were up to
8 lbs but I don't know. I have an old rowboat with a 5 hp motor
and will probably try trolling streamers. I am going to try and
catch my first salmon.
If you have any methods or special lures you use it would be
helpful.Thanks for the info!

| Yeap, DonMac's wimping out... gonna catch a tan instead of a cold...
But I'll go back some other time. That's beautiful country up there,
and the fishing isn't too shabby either (or so they tell me!).
I only caught one or two shorts, trolling a small streamer right
in the backwash of the boat, but it was on an ultrlight, so it was
fun... Also caught a few brookies in a nice little remote pond...
I'll go back...
Just so many places to fish, and so little time... Maybe I'll get
up there for the fall trip Keith, as long as my wonderful wife is
as wonderful then as she is now!

Good luck with your first salmon. I too just recently
caught salmon fever. Last fall RI stocked over 500 landlocked
salmon into several local "cold-water" lakes. These breeder's
range from 4 to 10 pounds. I've managed to get out three times
in late Nov. and early Dec. before ice-in. sorry to say I had
no luck, but the the TEXICAN almost landed one (he didn't have
a net) and TBDW got a 4.5 pounded on his second outing at Wallum
Lake.

Does anyone have any information on the bass in the Conn. lakes
and some of the other lakes in that area? I've haven't heard of
any bassn' in this area, but then again the people up in there
don't fish for them. There should be some reports on so called
"junk" fish coming from there....

| jim, there are few people in the 'north country' who fish for 'sun
fish' in expensive over powered boats. :*)

| Just my $0.02 worth...
I have only been up there once for about a week...
The lures that produced the best for me were the Woolybooger and
the greyghost... I trolled Back Lake and the Connecticuts ... it
seems (at least in our situation) that having at least a 60' leader
of 2 pound test worked the best.
At first I was using 4-6 lb test, wasn't having much luck, my buddy
who was using the 2lb was! I switched and so did my luck.
Back Lake (at that time about 2 seasons ago) seemed to be the easiest
to fish, lotsa trout, 1.5 lbers in my case though with one being
pretty near to 2lbs (Rainbows I believe, not sure though... don't
know trout that well).... My guess would be with all the camps on
Back Lake that (recovered Lake?) it is pretty much stocked with
the vacationers in mind.
The Connecticuts were (in my humble opinion) much tougher to fish...
seen lotsa fish (darn good size!!) on the graph, but couldn't seem
to land the big ones, although we did manage a few little ones.
But according to the graph, there are fish in them thar lakes as
big as me and you, although I never got one.
Good luck!

(CONNECTICUT LAKES)
IF YOU WANT TO CATCH THE BIG ONES IN THE CONNECTICUT LAKES, I RECOMMEND
TROLLING WITH LARGE BRASS BEADED SPINNER AND A GREY GHOST. ALLOW
ABOUT 3-5 FEET OF LINE BETWEEN THE SPINNER AND THE GREY GHOST.
DOWNRIGGERS WOULD HELP BECAUSE THE BIG FISH ARE DEEP BUT I'VE CAUGHT
SALMON WITHOUT A DOWNRIGGER.
GOOD LUCK.
