596.0. "fishing magazines" by AKOV02::SANSING (always dreading ice-in) Sun Feb 07 1988 07:50

There are many good mags around but I just picked up "field & Stream"
1988 sports series titled "FISHING" The guide to the best in freshwater
sport. It contains many great articles for both beginners (like
me) and ol' pros like Ranger Ron. It also contains a tear-out booklet
on Rigs for live bait, good to keep for kids.
Have any of you guys found any other really good fishing Mags?
    Inquiring minds want to know!!!

One that not too many people know about is FISHING FACTS. I think it
    is quite good.

The IN-FISHERMAN is hands down the best that I have seen for

all arround fishing. B.A.S.S. has the best info for the Bassin'

man. If you have cable TV there are quite a few fishing good fishing

shows. Also some good video tapes well worth watching. The tapes

will be the best way to learn techniques of Landing, retreives,

casting, reading a pond, lake or river, etc.

    			Good luck...

Caught the following in an article in January Field & Stream entitled
    "Snowbird Bass":

LAKE BISTINEAU: Largely overshadowed by nearby Toledo Bend, 17,500
acre Lake Bistineau, 30 miles south of Shreveport, offers excellent
bass action for those who enjoy fishing in acres of flooded cyprus
trees. In recent years, illegal netting has been controlled so
now the lake is producing some of the best fishing in years.

Clark's Bayou, Hay Meadow, Cowfight Slough, Sawmill Flats - every
inch of open water in Bistineau has a name, and these are the spots
aglers frequently refer to when they're catching fish this time
    of year.

Anglers work jigs or spinnerbaits slowly around the bases of the
big trees, or around the edges of the boat channels leading through
the timber. It's only 20 miles from one end of the lake to the
other and navigation is easy. The timber thins in the lower half
of the lake and the flats around Shreveport Pond often hold fish
coming to the shallows in preparation for spawning.

The lake has a number of marinas that will let anglers launch close
to the different fishing spots. Most of these welcome RV campers.
Cabins are available at Lake Bistineau State Park, and major motels
are available in Shreveport. Guide service is extremely limited.

Access is via State Highway 154 between Ringold and Elm Grove; or
from Minden south on State Highway 7 to Sibley, west on State Highway
164 to Doyline, and south on State Highway 163 to the lake.

Funny you should ask, Coonass. My wife was just suggesting tonight
that I should take a break without her and the kids this spring.
    I'll ask again when she's sober :=)

Funny you should mention Bistineau. I went down there and took
Ole COONASS up on his offer of using his fishing camp. Tell you
what, you are 50 feet from fishing water. The camp is VERY nice
and the rent is unbelievable. Just DON'T try to find it for the
first time at night. I want to take this time to publicly THANK
Bob for his kind and generous offer and the fun time I had while
I was there over Thanksgiving. Fishing was tough then due to being
right after a REAL COLD FRONT. Didn't detract any from the scenery,
peace, quite, and relaxation I enjoyed while there. Again, many
thanks for the the use of the place to Bob. One word of advice.
Due to the rent, there is a definite lack of maid service. So,
leave it like you would like to find it yourself. Other than that,
    ENJOY.
If any of you head out Colorado way, let me know. I might be
able to steer you toward what little water we have and maybe even
    a fish.
