582.0. "WOULD YOU EAT A TWO HEADED FISH?" by SCOMAN::WOOLDRIDGE () Wed Jan 20 1988 09:19

HOW MANY EAT THE FISH THEY CATCH IN MASS. WATERS? I CATCH AND RELEASE
BUT EVERY SO OFTEN CRAVE A GOOD FISH FRY. MY CONCERN IS THE THE
QUALITY OF THE WATER BOTH RIVERS AND LAKES. ANY HARD DATA TO SUPPORT
MY FEAR? I KNOW THAT WHEN I LIVED IN NORTHBORO "I" COULD NOT DRINK
MY OWN WATER! IT SMELLED AND LEFT THE SINKS GREEN. I GOT BOTTLED
WATER. AS YET HOWEVER I HAVE NOT SEEN ANY TWO HEADED BASS!

IF YOU CAN'T ALWAYS SWIM IN IT, AND YOU CAN'T DRINK IT, IT ONLY
FOLLOWS YOU BEST NOT EAT FROM IT IS MY FEELING. SAD BUT I BELIEVE
    TRUE..........COMMENTS?

582.1Fine for fishing?ADVAX::ALLINSONWed Jan 20 1988 10:0714

Hey,Nightcrawler,I Know of a place that you can go fishing.
It is even posted "FINE FOR FISHING".The Sudbury river was
posted a couple of years ago with signs that tell you not
to eat the fish because of high levels of mercury, but this
river has some huge bass and is not fished much because of
this problem.I would continue to fish it but I wouldn't
             eat anything in there.

    Caution is advised!

The recent findings of high concentrations of nastiness in Quabbin
fish really brought home to me the wisdom of not eating my catch.
If Quabbin fish are unclean, guess what a Charles River bass is
    full of!

I haven't seen any two headed bass either, but I do see with alarming
frequency, fish (mostly bluegills, but some smallmouth, carp, perch,
cats) with unpleasant growths that I've assumed to be some form
of cancer. I fish the Connecticut and Westfield Rivers in WMass.
The CT is rated class 2 I believe. I'm not sure of the Westfield.

582.3May not be any better but.....VICKI::DODIERWed Jan 20 1988 12:1910
I rarely eat anything from fresh water with the exception of
some of the northern NH lakes and ponds. I usually rely on my salt
water catches for my fish fries. I'm probably going to do an overnight
party boat trip in May. Last year in June, my father, myself, and
a friend went on one and wound up with about 100 lbs. of "fillets".
Since my father had already been previous to this he only wanted
about 10 lbs. of cusk. This left my friend and I with about 45 lbs.
of fillets each. Needless to say it kept me in fish for awhile.

    Nightcrawler, Nightcralwer, Nightcrawler,
From what I've been hearing about the bass they're pulling out
of the A-1 in westboro, Sounds like your dangeling your worm in
in the wrong waters, I cant varify they are good eaten or not but
they say two heads are better than 1.

Yo,Nightcrawler,I fish the assabet in spring at Thanksgiving
pond near the mill and have caught some beauts.Kinda expensive
because of the nuclear pickeral that love them worms. The bass
are healthy? looking but the smell of the assabet makes me
think of sewerage treatment plant.Did they finish building
            the treatment plant in westboro??

Just a quick reply on mercury in the rivers. We fish the Concord
river for muskie and northerns and this is the first year we seen
dont eat the fish markers. Upon calling the Fish and Game we found
that the Nashua and Asabett are loaded with mercury. Both of these
dump in on the concord and have now caused problems with fish quality.

    YO-----Keg,
I fish the assabett in Hudson and can vouch for large bass...
It makes for a great lunch hour in the spring/summer/fall. The smell
as you say is nasty. As for the treatment plant I do not know. I
thought the brown matter floating in the river was wood!
"this is not my beautiful Bass, this is not my large pickeral,
       how did I fish here?"

No, your health is too important, don't eat anything with two heads.
582.10 NO GLOW FROM A1LEDS::CAMPBELLFri Jan 22 1988 16:3515

I have a friend that caught and ate a 4 pound bass from the A1 project
and I haven't seen him glow in the dark, or grow and shrink with
temperature changes. The A1 is supposed to be fairly clean but
the pond right across the street is posted "NO FISHING,NO SWIMMING
        and NO HIKING".

In an earlier note I asked about Horn Pond in Woburn and didn't
get much response does anyone know about that pond.

One other quick question does anyone know how long a fish would
have to be exposed to polluted waters before becoming unsafe
to eat or show signs of deterioration.

    re .10> ate a 4 pound bass from A1.

The quality of the water in the A1 sight is very good. If you look
at it it is very brown and smells. The reason for this is the decaying
of of the standing timber in the lake. I meet the state bioligest
at some show once and he says that water tests almost good enough
to drink out of the lake. The smell and the color may get to you!!

As for the lake up the street. That is HUCKOMUCKA!!!! (sp) lots of
BIG BIG BIG bass. The problem with that lake is if you go to the
back side neer the railroad tracks you will see what is left from
the good old telephone company or may be from old Lester light bulb!
There are telephone poles and big pits that used to be filled with
creasole (sp) they use to dip the poles in these pits. The shit
got into the ground water and the lake so it is considered poluted.
I believe the water is ok but the creasole is heaver and settles
on the bottom so the food chain gets effected!
There is a big buck law suit out to clean it up... It is one of
the states noted pollution cleanup spots!

Sure you can. And if you eat it it long enough you gonna die Jack!

582.16Safe for human consumption?USWAV1::COONEYJMon Jun 24 1991 13:5414
Along the lines of this topic. I was fishing up in Newfound Lake in
Bristol N.H. and caught some keeper perch and small mouth. After
cleaning and filleting the fish I noticed some black parasitic worms
throughout the fillets. My questions are; What are they, can these
fillets be eaten, are these worms parasitic or symbiotic, and does this
only happen in warm water fish or would they also affect the trout and
salmon in Newfound. By the way I caught a 17.5" smallmouth that was
very fat, but didn't have a scale to weigh him before I released this
beautiful fish. Any estimates on weight?

    Thanks,

    Jim

    Jim,

Regarding the weight of the smallmouth. On a trip to the boundary
waters last year, a friend caught a 21" prespawn smallie that weighed
    in at 5 1/2 lbs. I believe.
