579.0. "Salmon Fishing on Wini" by MIGHTY::DILSWORTH (Keith Dilsworth DTN 264-5245) Thu Jan 14 1988 12:33

There are a lot of fishermen that have expressed an interest to
me about salmon fishing. I would like to propose a tournament
on Wini in April. We could launch at Wolfboro by the train
    station.

    Anyone interested?

It looks like we definitely have some interest in a friendly fishing
    contest.

I would like to take a survey of when is the best time for most
entrants. Saturday or Sunday would be fine with me. I would
suggest sometime between April 16 and May 1. This is about 1 to 3
weeks after ice out and is usually super.

use a partner that is famillar with the lake. Also,is the ramp area

2 years ago I put in at Alton Bay. There is a ramp just at the
bottom of the bay. I think its a pretty good ramp, but you have
to get there early. Launch fee was $5, and parking and the lines
are bad on weekends if you don't get there early. Otherwise there
is a dock right next to the ramp. I fished all of Alton bay and
saw many salmon taken. I lost my only salmon that season at the
mouth of the Merrymeeting River where it dumps in the bay. Other
guys might know of other ramps or better spots, but that's where
I'm gonna try again this year.

Isn't there a big tourney at WINNI about this time?
    If so do it then?

If I remember right, The prizes were good... Boats, motors etc.

579.13about that WINNI tourney!CADSE::GUERTINFri Feb 05 1988 13:0214
Yes there is, it's this weekend! BUT salmon can not be taken through
the ice. If you where to hook into one you're suppose to cut your
line, DO NOT bring the salmon up out of the hole.

The prizes you mentioned are given but only if a randomly drawn
number matches a tag from a caught lake trout. Cash prize are available
however for the five large fish caught in many different categories.
Biggest bass of the day is $100, next biggest is $90, then $80,
    $70, ect.

You are right in that the GRAND prize, if you matched, is a $30,000
    boat, motor, and trailer.

I think TBDW's referring to the Wini Derby, that's scheduled around
the time Keith suggested for this tourny... I picked up a flyer
on that tourny at the Centrum last night, and I *think* it was
scheduled for May 5-7??? But I really don't recall for sure...

    re .10

You could launch a 22' at Wolfboro with no problem, but you probably
never get it under the bridge (about 4' of overhead clearance).
There is another launch a few blocks away, but I'm not sure how it
is. I'll check it out and let you know.

    re .11

There is a free launch 100 yards up on the left from the
Merrymeeting River. It is across from the Gazebo beside the dock
for SS Mt Washington. There is a small dock there to tie you boat
up to and quite a bit of free parking.

    re .12

There is a 3 day fishing derby on Winni every May. They give big
prizes and charge about $25 to enter.

I'd like to be part of this adventure! The only problem is I have
no boat, salmon gear, or any experience fishing for salmon. So if

Any weekend is ok by me, but seems to me that if you go much
before may 1st there is a 50/50 chance that the ice is still in
at least part of the lake.

I also want to say that I have a partner lined up. His name is

I have been fishing Winni the last couple of years and the ice
has gone out by the second weekend in April each year.

I have been tring to deside what date would be best for our get
together. Trout season opens April 23 this year and is a priority
for a few people I have talked to. April 30 is the first Bass
    Tournament for the NH ABC.

I think the best date would be April 16. I don't think there will
be any problem with the ice no being out. The only problem is it
may be too cold for MacIntyre.

    Keith,
I've noticed in reading about other tournaments in this
conference that most require you to have a live well.
    I don't ! Is this going to be a requirement ? I also get
the impression that there are only two people allowed
in a boat for these sort of things. If this is not the
case then I may tag my girlfriend along with me too.
(maybe we should make it a rule...just kidding...I think)

579.28Don't you just love spring!BAGELS::DILSWORTHKeith Dilsworth DTN 226-5566Mon Mar 21 1988 11:5524
    Marty,

I for one intend to keep my Salmon. A live well is for keeping
Salmon fresh, not to alow you to exchange one Salmon for another.
Culling of Salmon is strictly illegal in NH. If you don't like
to eat Salmon and they are lively after the weigh in, you may
release them. If they are not lively, I'll take em :-)

As for the number of people in the boat... check the coast guard
capacity sticker :-) It is "Heaviest Salmon, winner takes all".
If you have two people in your boat, you can keep three fish
bigger than the last. If you have 3 people in the boat with 2
rods each, you will have a tagled up mess.

Seriously, this tournement is for fun. Several contestants have
not Salmon fished before. This is an opertunity for them to try
it. If you use tandom streamers, 7s rapalas and mooslook woblers
you have a very good chance of catching several shorts and one
or two keepers. My first time on Winni i was ther for 1 1/2 hours
and had 5 shorts and my two keepers.

This has to be the latest spring in several years. Alton bay was open
Sunday all the way to the mouth. The fishing was very fast along the
edge of the ice. We landed 4 keepers 16"-19".

I drove up to Wolfboro and the ice was out only 100 yards from shore.
I plan to take off Wednesday to see if it is out enough to have our
tournament. If the ice is not out, we'll have to post pone it. Alton
boat launch is too much of a mad house to try and coordinate any type
    of a contest.

    Directions to Wolfboro Boat Launch

Take Rt 28 North to Rt 109 in Wolfboro.

Take Rt 109 North. Go past the IGA and take the 2nd street on
the right. The launch is beside the the train station.

If you turn left just past the IGA there is a launch directly
into the lake. It might be a tad narrow, but you won't have to
go under a bridge with 4-5' of clearance.

    before hunting takes over.

Spent this past weekend up at Winni. We picked up
one salmon Friday morning, 19 in. It was full, I mean full of
smelt. We had several more hits but never got another to the
boat. Saturday the lake got too rough to troll, so we headed
into the coves. Fished Pickerel Cove and now I know why it is
called that! We got sick of catching them, but it broke up the
day. Sunday morning had another salmon on but the damn down
rigger didn't release my line from the ball, so we lost him, sigh.
What an aerial display he put on though. Water temp was fairly
constant at 44 deg. In the coves it was as high as 56. We fished,
for salmon, around Governors island, the Weirs and into Paugus Bay.
Only heard of a few being picked up in that area the whole weekend.
We stayed at the Naswa Resort. Nice place and would recommend it
to anyone. We paid $48 a night for a small cabin. I believe it is
$75 a night for a two bedroom cabin. The place is well maintained
and they have private docks for your boat and rentals too. All in
all it was a great weekend even though we only caught one salmon.
Can't wait for the smallies to turn on now......

>One is better then None...

I hear ya. I spent last weekend on a trout and salmon lake. Saw a guy with
a nice one in the boat and watched his bobber talk a ride but he was too
anxious and he blew it. Better than we did though. No salmon. I did catch
some nice trout, including a 13" native brookie on a fly I tied (looks like
a smelt, surprise, surprise!) They wuz tasty! But I was disappointed that we
didn't hook any salmon.
