Look for the premier issue of Angling Adventures on the local
newsstand. The editor spent a week there and has a lot to say.
One surprise recommendation; the local folks out of Gloucester,
Yankee Fleet head south for the winter and the 100' Yankee Capts
does overnight trips out of Key West, I believe. Should put you
into Snapper, Grouper, other denizens of the deep.
You will see a number of recommendations (mine included) of the
Yankee Fleet in this conference.

578.2 | Marathon (Keys) Fishing | TRACTR::MCSHEA | | Fri Jan 15 1988 15:35 | 19 |
| I've spent a week's vacation during the Winter, in Marathon (about
half way down the Keys) since 1981. While I've never gone "deep
sea" fishing for Dolphin, I have chartered a small fishing boat
on the Gulf side and really enjoyed myself. The action I've
experienced has been with Yellow tails, Grouper (small ones which
fight like Hades), small Barracuda, and Snappers. Seems like all
the Fish you catch off the Keys have been taught how to fight, and
I'm sure you'll enjoy the action. It's very easy to pick up
small Barracuda from shore with light surf casting type of tackle,
and light/bright diamond shaped lures retrieved near the surface.
Fish are generally very good eating, but Barracuda over 5 pounds
have a toxin that can be poisonous.
If you're interested in a half day, and you're in Marathon area,
I recommend the "Jersey Devil" in the marina behind the Hurricane
Resort motel at 43rd Street. If the Yankee Captains does as well
out of Key West as he does out of Gloucester (and I understand he
does) he might be worth the money.

578.3 | Isle Marada | TOOK::SWEET | | Fri Jan 15 1988 15:51 | 8 |
| I will be going down to Isle Marada in March (if all goes well).
This is the key above Marathon. I have seen many adds for both party
boats, Charters as well a boat rentals for most any one of the keys.
The fisherman ran a couple of articles on key west during december,
and recommended serveral captains. I will be researching this more
as time goes on.

| Well I did not fish in the Keys at all. Record cold 42 degrees
and I was not prepared for weather.
Got one day of good bass fishing south east of TAMPA however.
nothing too big but quite a few

578.8 | Florida here I come... | TOOK::SWEET | Capt. Codfish...Jeffries Ledge or Bust | Tue Mar 15 1988 13:13 | 6 |
| I am leaving for Isle Marada tomorrow. Latest reports are temps
in the 70's and good fishing. I will file a trip report in a week.
Best news is that two weeks after I get back the lower unit will
be back on and Cod fishing will start!

578.9 | Keys trip report | TOOK::SWEET | Capt. Codfish...Jeffries Ledge or Bust | Thu Mar 24 1988 13:36 | 10 |
| Back from florida with a quick report. Not much fishing was done,
with a 10 month old baby along I could not steal too much time. I
did a night run on a party boat and caught about a dozen red snapper
and had them for dinner the next night. Also fished for 'Cuda from
shore and landed one about 4 pounds. The 6 packs brought in a couple
of nice sail fish and blue marlin. Standard charter boats down there
are 54 foot bertrams or Harris. I have the names of some captains
if anyone is ever interested.
