570.2 | MY VOTE GOES TO THE CENTRUM | VLSBOS::RADICIONI | | Wed Jan 06 1988 10:47 | 13 |
|
I went to both shows and the Centrum show is smaller BUT a lot
better then springfield.. Centrum had a few good sales people there
with good imformation.. Springfield had salesmen selling things
with no idea what they were selling.. Centrum had bald and a golden
eagles,Springfield had overpriced boats.. Centrum had super guides
and advisors on trips,Springfield had a couple.. And the best part,
the Centrum had a lot more give aways that were worth more than
Springfield..
So,what i'm trying to say," take the 50 mile drive to the Centrum
its worth it.. you'll like it,a whole lot better.."

| I've got school on Thursday nites, so I'll probably be heading up there on
Friday nite if anyone cares to meet then. As I recall, a bunch of us got
together on a Friday nite last year (DonMac, RR, TBDW, Bassin Bob) and we
went out after the show for a few brews and to tell lies (I think I outdid
TBDW!).
I'm leaving from MKO, so if anyone from MKO needs a ride, let me know...but
be prepared for downing a couple after the show!

570.9 | My vote.....Friday!! | MENSCH::SCHOLZ | Ron....and thanks for all the fish | Thu Jan 07 1988 13:26 | 21 |
| TBDW and I are going to have to have it out, because I think we
should all meet on Friday. First because most of us won't have to
get up on Sat to go to work, and second because the headline pro
usually does his thing on Friday night at 8 or 8:30. That's where
we all met last year....remember Joe, Don, Garry, Gary, etc.
I will have to admit, as good as I think I am at stringing out a
fish story or two, Holeshot and TBDW are something to behold. I
mean fellas, these two are pros. You really have to be there after
a couple of rounds and just sit back, listen and admire. I never
heard tales as tall. Mark Twain could have taken lessons.:^) So,
if want some of the finest free intertainment available, be there.
This should be an annual event, not to be missed. Besides, the show
is good too:^)
Count me in for Friday, Ranger Ron
ps. for all you crazy ice fisherpersons.....tight lines, or is it
flags up, or tilts galore....well, you know what I mean. Me? I'll
just sit in my warm living room and watch all the fishing shows
on T.V. ;^) Till Spring!

need a few brews under me to tell you about all of those outstanding times

ANYTHING! (I think I just left myself open for some abuse...oh well!)

DonMac is the one buying all the little doo-dads for his boat...
Ranger Ron is the guy with the long face (after a poor season, ya know...)
TBDW will be right behind RR (it's habit forming) practicing his tall
tale story-telling...
R/O Palmer is the guy without any fingers (if he goes...)
Bassin Bob will be the guy trying to sell all those purple fire-tail worms
I talked him into trying at Stumpfield...
And I'll be the guy standing away from the above mentioned group (out of
embarassment) wearing my Australian bush hat hoping no one associates me
with them!
OTHERWISE...if you're unable to distinguish these true perch-jerkers from
the crowd, let's plan to meet at the BEER stand (where else!?) at 8:30 or so.

A PEARL TAIL WORM THROUGH THE WATER WHEN SOME MENTALLY DEFICIENT
BASS WAS SWIMMING BY AND ACCIDENTALLY GOT TANGLED IN HIS LINE (HE
THOUGHT IT WAS A ROCK). AND WHILE ON A TRIP IN FLORDIA AL AND I
RENTED A GUIDE, AL BROUGHT HIS TRUSTY PEARL TAILS AND BITCHED THE
WHOLE TIME ABOUT THE LACK OF MENTALLY DEFICIENT BASS IN FLORDIA.
AND YES, I TOOK HIS MONEY ON THAT TRIP. HE SAID HIS LOSS WAS DUE
TO THE FACT THAT THE GUIDE AND MYSELF HOGGED THE BOW OF THE BOAT,
ALSO SOMEONE HAD TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR "DEADLY WATER SNAKES".
AL HEARD SOMETHING ABOUT THEM AND SPENT MOST OF THE DAY LOOKING
UP IN THE TREES. BUT HE CAN TELL A GOOD STORY AND HE MAY FIND A
BUSINESS REASON TO COME DOWN AND ATTEND THE SHOW, BUT DON'T LET
HIM HAVE MORE THAN TWO BEERS, THATS HIS LIMIT.

570.22 | The real story... | MAPLE::WHEEL | | Tue Jan 19 1988 07:00 | 67 |
|
Hi....
I feel that since the entire BTO facility has brought Mr Easter's
carefully written note (.20) to my attention, I will try to set
the story straight for you....
As any of you people that have fished with John know, he can be
a little touchy when it comes to losing...!!!!
The incident that John speaks of (mentally deficient bass) took
place last July in John's new boat.
We had just launched the boat, and John said "Lets swing out here
and I'll troll into the weeds over there...
As he started to troll into the weeds (me knowing that bass tend
to lay on the edge of the wed beds) I tossed my pearl tail on the
edge.....Two seconds later my drag was taking off at an alarming
rate of speed. I set the hook and adjusted the drag, and at the
same time asking john to stop the boat. The great angler from central
Texas turned around and uttered the now famous words "your snagged
on the bottom"....My snagged bottom by now was moving quite rapidly
from one side of the boat to the other, and after four requests
John finally stopped the Bayliner.
The result was a 6-1/2 lb largemouth.....(the so called mental fish)
It was getting dark and we decided to get the fish home.
It was now picture taking time and John got out his 39 cent Polaroid
to capture this fish on film. (He was begging so I let him hold
the fish for a minute so he could see what a real fish felt like..)
I asked him to wait after the first picture to see how it came out
in case we had to take more..but did he wait..??? Noooooo...!!!
Of course the pictures were too dark, and he rushed to get the fish
wrapped in borax.
The next night we went out again...same place, same pearl tail....
Again my line was attacked, but I lost 4 or 5 in the weeds. (you
have to be carefull with 4lb test line..we like to give the fish
a chance here in Vermont)
However, I did land another fish..this was only 4lbs...as John looked
on. Have I failed to mention that through this whole time John only
had "1" bite...well if I haven't mentioned it I won't.
It turns out that when I mentioned to him later in the year that
the total weight of my two fish would have won the "summer long"
fishing derby he was in, he got deathly quiet, and drank all my
beer. You see the derby was won with 9+ lbs and my two mentally
deficient fish weighed over 10lbs.
This leads us to Florida....
We did not have the greatest weather for fishing according to our
guide and it seemed to prove out as the day went on...
the guide had about 4 fish and John and I had none. later I had
caught two 1 1/2 pounders and John had caught none. (again)
The guide asked if we wanted to stop at a 1/2 day because of the
poor fishing, and I said "ask the man who hasn't caught a stinking
thing if he wants to quit..I have fish.......
John knowing full well that if he says quit he will lose $10.00
and bragging rites for the next 6 zillion years says....well, we
certainly aren't killing them are we..
Just as he says this, the water starts to boil with bass 100 yards
away. The problem is they were surface feeding and they were the
size of goldfish..at this point John begged for the best surface
spoon that the guide had, and convinced him to point the bow of
the boat toward the surfacing fish thus cutting me (in the aft section)
out of any chance to cash in on the feast of guppies.
"This" is how I was out fished by John Easter........
Now I know that he has told you that I will tell you a fish story...
but ask yourself if I have ever lied to you people before..???
Sincerely Yours
Al Angler

This note is for John Easter to read, so everyone else please do
not look at this note.........
John, your lucky I didn't mention the time your "new" boat crapped out
in the Merrimac River, and it took us two hours to get back to the
launch using the trolling motor.
See, I don't tell people "everthing" that you do...

570.24 | Here's Another Jab For John... | ATEAM::MERCURIO | SON, were talkin' about A MONSTER | Tue Jan 19 1988 11:47 | 29 |
| Al,
I also fished with John (thank God it was out of my boat) and I
have to agree with your assessment of his fishing skills. He likes
to use those (what I call) "kids" lures, you know the ones that
you don't have to do anything with and they still catch fish.
Namely the Rappala type lures, except he uses the new and improved
version ---- the BOMBER BAIT. Well let me tell you, he lost
more pounds that day (he could have won the tournament and probably
would've taken the Bassmaster Award for the year with what he lost)
because of this lure, together with his fishing technique, or should
I say his lack of technique! I kept telling him to take that "kids"
lure off and use a "man's" lure, but NOOOOO, he knew he had the
answer for that day (unfortunately he was asking the wrong question).
Well, to make a long story short, I won the tournament (along with
the bragin' rights) with only about 5 or 6lbs and he got skunked!!!
I have to admit it was fun watching John's reaction everytime he
watched another smallie come up and smash the hell out of the lure and
not take it. You would think he'd learn a lesson after that day,
no way, he went and ordered a gross of those lures, although
I'm not sure why. Maybe he'll give them to some kids fishing on the
bank, so they can show him how to work 'em.
62 days to Spring!

| "SKUNKED" (sorry), was it Jim???? Who caught the first fish from
your boat that day, and need I say within the first 5-10 min's.
And who, "WHO" I ask was dragging a "Floating Rappala" behind the
boat????? Need I say, Mr. Jig & Pig himself. Don't forget, you were
the one that begged me not to mention that "Un-Natural Act". Enough
said from my end on the lower Merrimack........
And as for Mr. Wheel, I just called Wildlife Taxidermy and told
them you decided not to have the belly over extended on the mount.
Their reply was that the bass would only look like it's true 4 and
3/4 lbs. I told them "Thats alright, if you make it look like 6
and 1/2 lbs. it will look to much like Al......Ha! Ha!.
Regards to all, john.

| If anybody is at the show Sunday afternoon, check out the Saltwater
awards. Bob, a friend that goes fishing with me, is receiving two
awards for a 92 lb. Cod caught aboard my boat last July.
I believe it is a state record for the largest Rod & Reel cod ever
landed. And the largest landed for the year, 1987.
The funny part about it was got into a bunch of "steaker" cod that
weekend, and didn't have a scale big enough to weigh any of them,
only good to 50 lbs.
So we cleaned all but the biggest and went in search of a scale.
The fish was caught about mid-morning and kept cool, but out of
the water till the weigh-in around 4:00 PM. So the fish should
have weighed a few more pounds. Some of the smaller fish were
probably records for this year also.

and would love love to accompany you gentlemen to whatever sleazy
bar you choose. I've been rehearsing the truth all week. I also
hope to arrive at the show well before the evening if I can invent
a convincing truth for leaving work early. I'll be wearing suitable
DEC identification so stop me if you see me.

| Well, a bunch of us met last night and had a good time.
After the Expo, we headed out for the bass ales...
However, unfortunately we made the mistake of letting Bass'n Bob
get there first. By the time the rest of us got there, he was outside
in the parking lot... They had already kicked him out... something
about smelling like fish... However, all was not lost, TBDW came
thru for us and invited us all to his favorite local watering hole,
his home away from home (nice place TBDW!). They didn't have bass ale,
but at least they let Bass'n Bob in...
As to be expected, hip boots were necessary... Joe T and Ranger
Ron telling war stories, Bass'n Bob rattling something about his
elementary school english teacher...
Got to associate some more names with faces, Coonass, Steve Cuzzones,
Rich Neal, glad to meet you guys...

PS: Hey Harbor Master, where are ya??? I thought you were going
to come in today also??? Too much for ya last night??? 8^)

You guys aint got no class
The owner of dirty dan's called me this morning and asked who the
hell have I started hangin out with. It seems that someone stole
the toilet paper out of the bathroom and took the screws out of
the safety bar across the urinal. I gave him Bob's home phone number.
Also, The bartender said she waited out back for 20 minutes just
like the guy with the safari hat asked her to do. she would'nt say
weather he showed up or not. She did say that she really had hoped that
the skinny guy that looked like the bearded guy playin poker would
have said something to her instead of just staring at her with that
lusty smile.
also, did one of you loose a 20 dollar bill that night?

rings. So I pick it up and there is some hick on the other end
laughing. Then he asks me "Are you Rich Neal". I say "Ya Why". I
figure it one of my buddys busting balls you know. Well then he
goes "Did you take any chances at the show?". I said "Ya why?".
He goes "Well it looks like you won a trolling moter and battery.".
Well the worst part is I realy dont remember taking the chance on

won it. Dont that beat all.

what the hell!!! If you did not park you fat ass on that shuffle
bowling game table you may have smelt normal when you got home..
As for telling you wife!! Did she see the new ROD I let you take
home????? or did you already hide it in the boat?? Boy I RR could
have only keep his mouth shut... That rod would have look great
in my ranger!!!
Hay all you folks out there. Let me ask you one Question. If you
bought a $89.99 fishing rod, would you notice it missing from you
car when you got in and drove to a new pub??? Hay Joe those kids
work fast in this city don't they!!! Hell the motor was running
I could have had you car aswell!!
This has been bassin Bob's final entry for a while. I have to go
write a BNF for my grammer so you folks can read my entries. So
anyone who has obtained any valuable info from my notes can just
call me..... Hay ledgen!! WHERE ARE YOU I think its time we talk!

Yes, it was an education meeting you guys in person ( in animal
might be more appropriate ).
I can honestly say it was one one night I was pleased to come home
skunked, not having caught anything ( what's the incubation period
for vd? ). So that was TBDW's local hangout ? I figured Bassin'
Bob was just following his nose. In case it's not apparent from
previous replies, lock your car when BB is around. Those beady
eyes do in fact reflect a larcenous nature.
BTW, that $20 must be mine. I must have dropped it as I tried to
hand it to the girl behind the bar. In retrospect, I think someone
was putting something "special" in my pepsi.
Hey, Holeshot, was that a serious invite to spend the night before
the next tourney? Will I have to hide in the boat or tell your
wife we're goin" to work the next morning? Nice rod. How come
Ranger Ron doesn't like it? Jealous, RR? Give BB $20, he'll steal
you one just like it.
DonMac, how can someone so prolific in this file be so quiet in
person? Kinda hard to get a word in edgewise between Holeshot and
Ranger Ron, huh. BTW, it's Cuzzone (singular) there couldn't be
two of me, the s on the end of my username stands for Steve ;-).
Coonass, keep an open date for me at Bisteneau. Looks too good
to pass up. I just gotta figure a way to get DEC to pay my way
to Dallas.

Yeah, sure Steve. Anytime....the hole in the barn roof isn't that big so
you otta find a dry place to hole up overnight. Just don't bed down in the
hay loft as the racoons and bats have claimed that space!
Oh...so that was YOUR 20 bucks, huh? So it was YOU that was supposed to
meet the barmaid out back! I hope you got change back from your twenty,
though....cuz it wasn't worth $10! (On second thought...it wasn't worth it
AT ALL!) I hope you took an extra heavy dose of pennicillan when you got

Well, Steves, I tend to be a fairly laid back guy. And in the company
of those guys (especially when they're armed with brew in hand),
Rodney Dangerfield couldn't get a word in edgewise! Anyway, as I recall,
I didn't hear much from your end either, but then again you couldn't say
much, passed out on the bar with that $20 bill in your mouth!8^)

Don, hopefully, I'll see ya at the next tourney. Joe said I can
sleep in his barn the night before with him and the other rats.
As for being quiet, you might have noticed I was sitting with Coonass
Bob and can that man ever talk!
And, if I didn't recall vaguely that your wife is wont to read this
file, I might slip up and let on that it was your $20 and when the
barmaid was finished with you, she offered it to me. But, of course,
I'm not likely to slip up like that.

At the Expo, up on the top level, there was a booth selling a new
kind of ice fishing tilt (trap, tip-up, etc.). It had a plastic
base similar to a Windlass, and laso had a removeable flag that
stored in the base unit when not in use.
I didn't pick up any lit at this booth. A friend of mine who
runs a tackle shop is looking for the name and address of the
manufacturer. Did anybody happen to get a brochure?
Thanks for any info.

Meeting Conass was a real pleasure. He was the only one there that

The one thing I would recommend to all in the future is to wear

that watched BB get into a shower (yes, with clothes) and then try

I bought a set of those Continentals last year and really like them.
They seemed to be everywhere last year but the local supply seems
to have dried up. I was looking for a few spares this year and couldn't
find any. This seems strange since I live less than 20 miles from
Lewiston. Anyway I think they are a good product and I'm glad to
hear that they are still available. Maybe I'll stop by the plant
the next time I'm in Lewiston and see if I can get some "factory
seconds".
