Steve,
I am a veteran of about 7 Willoughby river trips (always first
weekend of trout season), and to be truthful, I have never had
any luck with the rainbow/steelies. I have seen some nice ones
pulled in, though. I believe the hotspot is right under the bridge
in Orleans. The secret is to get there REAL early. The most
popular bait is spawn sacs, although sponge and crazy eggs are
also used. The water is usually pretty high the first weekend,
and the weather is usually pretty cool (30's-40's) so dress warm.
As far as where to stay, there are a number of inns/motels that
aren't to expensive but I cant give you any names right now.
If you don't have any luck in the willoughby, try the Clyde or
the Black. I'll be there opening day!! (again)
Till April,
Rene Bates

| Hey Steve,
I have fished the Willoughby several times and have also been
skunked, but every year I've learned something new. #1 the best
time is from sunrise for about 2 hours, then they slack off
along with the fishing pressure. They get a few at dusk also.
#2 the best place to fish is at the falls in the village of
Orleans, also a few nice holes downstream. #3 the preferred
bait is either orange or yellow sponge, but I've seen fish
caught on stonefly nymths also. The first weekend is usualy
very slow fishing,(I am going to try the second this year).
A nice place to stay is the Orleans Inn, its about 3/4's
of a mile from the falls, but you had better make reservations
a couple of months in advance. I haul my camper up and stay
right at the falls, as there is room for about 8-10 campers.
LOOKING FORWARD TO SPRING

| thanks for the information guys !! just what i'm looking for.
it sounds like timming is the most important factor here. i still
have a couple more questions for ya. #1 when exactly is opening
day in vt. for trout ? #2 do they have a 3 day non- resident licence
and how much is it ?

569.4 | yes you use to be able to get a 3 day license. | VELVET::GATH | | Thu Jan 14 1988 08:30 | 9 |
| Years ago when I fished the white river the State of Vermont
did have a non resident 3 day lecense, a 7 day non resident
licese, and a annual non resident license.
The funning thing back then I was able to buy an anuall non resident
licse for less money than I could buy a resident anuall license.
Unfortunately this was over ten years ago and I am afraid that
purhaps more current information is necessarry.
