What sort of fish were they? Freshwater sharks? I had a couple
bitty ones in my fishtank.
What's that fish in Africa, Nile perch? Grows to 7-800 # ?
How much to ship my boat to the Amazon?

I put the note in to try and get some initial responses..I AM serious
about the expedition, but putting a note about it in here has "leaked"
the idea to other people, they might wanna steal it!
I think it would work...even if nobody catches anything..there's
lotsa wildlife and stuff to keep the cameras busy, the only problem
is the funding and logistics...perhaps Richard Branson would be
interested (another mad Englishman!)
I'm pretty sure there are some BIG fish down there...and with the
right equipment it would work...comments?...(seriously)

| I'M GAME; IF SOME OF THE MAJOR FISHING PUBS (READ MAGAZINES) COULD
BE PERSUIDED TO FUND US. This could be the begining of the next
National Geo Series.
Any tackle manufacture would be proud to sponser such a lark. If
you need a gilly give me a call. I know the water as well as any
of you.
Maybe we could even get a beer sponser, yea! Thats the ticket.

Mr. Beazley
Is there any way to catch dem Alligator Gar? During last years
fishin trip to the MISSISSIPPI Bayou we saw a BUNCH of those dam
things hangin out just under the surface. I tried every thing short
of shooting at them and couldn't raise a smile. I had 14# test
on a worm rod and thought that I could probably get one in if I
coulda hooked it. I would say that the biggest I saw was 8 or 9
feet long. (at least that's the way I remember it).
RR, The TEXICAN and I are starting to make plans for our mid March
trip. Would sure like to hear more about that camp.

567.14 | Mepps for Alligator Gar | TALLIS::GALLANT | | Fri Jan 08 1988 10:53 | 15 |
| I caught an Alligator Gar at Lake LBJ in Texas. I was Bass fishing
when we came upon a herd of these GAR basking in the sun just below
the surface. I tried a bunch of different things, (rubber worms,
johnson silver spoon, crank bait, spinner bait) the Gar ignored
them all. I was about to give up and move on and decided to give
the ole standard Mepps spinner a try. The Gar took the Mepps.
After about a 15 minute fight I pulled this Gar up along side the
boat. He rolled my 10 lb monofilament around his open alligator
mouth and headed for the bottom of ole Lake LBJ. My Mepps is still
lodge in his snout.
You can keep the Gar. Once hooked they fight like a log( slow
but determined). Give me a good ole southern bucket mouth any day.
Good luck.

RE: Gar. Seems like I read in a recent issue of Florida Sportsman
that a new state record alligator gar had been registered last year
(first one registered....had to be a record) that weighed in at
125 # or so. A 125 # fish has got to be difficult to land even
if it doesn't fight like a bass. I'll have to reread the article
to see what it was caught on.
RE: Eclectic Eels and Piarhea. Too commonplace, let's go fishing
for hippos.

| Ltes get serious. everyone knows hippos can't be caught on fis'n
rods. the traditional meathods of lureing em into the livewell with
decoys is best. Recomended bait is a large fosters larger with pizza
trailer.

567.18 | Gettin de gars | DPDMAI::BEAZLEY | | Fri Jan 08 1988 15:49 | 20 |
| Hey dere!!
As far as ole Coonass knows dere are tree ways to ketch dem gars:1)in
de winter wen de water am clear, som ob dem dippysea divers goes
don an sticks dem wit dere speers, 2)wan de wethers so hot dat you
can burn yore but in a pare ob kakipants, you can rig op a dippysea
rod an reel wit 50-pound line, an a g-strang(from a gitar, not whar
chew were tinking bout!!). Chew git some pices of plerch and strang
the g-strang thru dem an bak thru de eye, makin a loop. Wan de gar
bite de pice of plerch, de snare grab him!!. Nowdays dey take pices
ob VELCRO an glue it to dem spoons or spinnerbates an use a steel
leader also, and 3)at nitetime dem gars feed on de top. Some go
out an use a hatlite an bow-an-arels an shoot dem. Dey got a reel
on de bow wit a line to brang it bak.
Talk at Joe bout de place, an let me know an I'll send chew som
pitchers an maps ob de place. De whethers warm, but de beer's cold
wanever chew want to come...

Just picked up a new magazine titled "ANGLING ADVENTURES" put out
by the In-Fisherman folks that makes a likely sponsor. It features
exotic places and species (Upstate NY aint exactly exotic but as
they say, "one man's exotic is another man's backyard"). Of course,
you'd have to prove you could write....suggest you don't let them
see the contents of this conference.
