561.0. "SURF's UP???" by PPT::RECKIE (Drive Faster, You'll Get There Sooner !) Wed Dec 30 1987 09:18

    Hi,

I am interested in starting out surf fishing. I just got a neat
12' rod from shakespeare on Xmas, and a Quantum reel, along with
a whole bunch of spoons and what not...

Where can I try this stuff out in the winter. I have access to a
4WD and am willing to go off-road. Is there any fishing in the winter??

Also, if anyone could suggest a good tackle shop with possibly some
    hints on good lures....

Or even a good book on Surf Fishing...

    Have a good New Year,
    Steve Reckie

You do not say where you are located (MA. NH.??) but you might try
the jetty or beach at the mouth of the merrimac. Give Surfland a
call (they may only be open week ends) and see what they have to
say, you might get some flats or scrod cod around there. Be prepared
to be COLD out there especially if the wind is from the NE. Sea
worms would be you best bait.

Try picking up a copy of _Surf_Fishing_With_the_Experts_ by Rich
Reina, et.al. I'm not sure if it's available in stores, but it is
available from the Fisherman magazine. Also, most general books
about saltwater fish/fishing have sections on surfcasting. If your
real interested in DISTANCE, there are 2 books by John Holden centered
    on the pendulum casting style.

    Tight lines...
