541.0. "Bass spots in Anaheim??" by FEISTY::TOMAS (Joe) Wed Dec 02 1987 08:47

I know this is rather short notice, but....

A co-worker and I are leaving this Friday for DECUS out in Anaheim, CA.
and will be out there all next week.

We are both packing a couple of rods and some tackle and are planning to
MAKE TIME to get in some bassin.

QUESTION...

Do any of you know of any decent lakes/ponds within 1-2 hours from Anaheim
that might provide a couple of Yanks some decent thrills and that also
provide boat rentals??

My father (who lives in Anaheim) showed me a place 20-30 minutes away
called Irvine Lake that charges to fish it (private??) but is heavily
stocked with BIG trout, and I think bass. I think they also that they have
boat rentals.

Any suggestions??

Thanx in advance...

    Big Joe..

I don't remember the issue, BUT Bassmasters mag did some articles
on a res. just outside of Riverside, Ca. The lead photo was the
one with the guy that used a 16 inch rubber worm to catch some HOG.

If I'm not mistaken this isn't to far from Disneyland. Let me know
what you find out as I am plannining to be there mid December.

OK...I just got some info...

Gary,

The lake you were refering to was San Vincente Lake located just northeast
of San Diego. The article in Bassmasters said that this guy was fishing
from shore and using 14-16" worms and nailed 14+ lb hawgs!! It should only
be about a 2 hour drive from Anaheim. Paul and I are checking it out.

Irvine Lake (Irvine, just outside Anaheim) info...

I called them and they said they heavily stock the place with BIG trout
(10lbs+), and although lm bass are there, few people go there for bass. The
largest bass caught this year was 8.5lbs.

Hours: 6AM - 4PM
	5PM - 11PM nites (Friday & Saturdays only)

Fees: $9/person/day (NO fishing license required)
	$30/day boat rental (w/7hp outboard)
	$18/half-day, noon - 4PM

We also called B.A.S.S. and got the names of the president of the San Diego
BASS Chapter and another pro in the L.A. area. Hopefully, they can give us
some help.

I also received the following mail message regarding Silverwood Lake. I
fished this place once a couple of years ago on the weekend and it was
CROWDED! We had to wait an hour in line just to launch. The lake at that
time was also extremely muddy and murky.

Thanks, Denise, for the info!

Dear Joe,

My husband became an avid fisherman while living in the desert in southern
Cal. It was difficult to find "sport" type areas. Some of those trout
farms are nothing but a water fountain loaded with fish! Catch and keep only
and pay by the pound! Not for the sportsman. Our favorite place
was Lake Silverwood in the Angeles National Forest. The lake is run by the
Cal. Dept. of Forestry (I recall) and you can rent boats at the marina. The
last time my husband rented one it was $30.00 for the day (that was probably
2 yrs ago). It is a large lake - water skiing is allowed - so people come
from ALL over. The winds will knock you over so dress warm. I wish I could
let you in on our favorite spot - but it's hard to explain - the coves are
great. Have caught bass, shad, catfish, bluegill and I think there are
stripped bass (near the mouth of the spillway) but you need another license
for that. Oh, and minnows are not allowed - had good luck on nightcrawlers.

If you look at a map, you would take 215 north towards Barstow or Vegas. As
you get to the outskirts of San Bernardino you will see signs for Mountain
Resorts. I don't know that way - and it may take you towards Big Bear which
is more ski country about now (need GOOD brakes, too). If I recall (it's been
a year now) you want to pass the weigh stations and take the exit right after
them. You may try to call to find directions (I get lost in a shoebox!) and to
also to make sure the park and marina are open this time of year.

Between Anaheim and the desert ( we lived in Hesperia) this place is heaven!
There is also Big Bear Lake in Big Bear and Jackson Lake in Wrightwood (small).

Good luck and enjoy!

Denise Arnold

p.s. sent this via mail - not my account. Would like to hear from you when
you return. Please write me at NISYSE::DAVILA and put something like
"to Denise" in the subject. I'll be sure to get it that way.

Well...it looks like I won't get any more info before I go, so it looks like
Paul and I will be heading south to San Diego to fish San Vincente Lake
where those 15 pounders are just waiting to be caught!

Hopefully, I'll be able to log in while I'm at DECUS, so I'll try to keep
y'all informed of how many hawgs we nail!!

And even if we don't do too well, at least we'll be fishin in SHIRT SLEEVES!

I was gonna say, "Wish me luck!" ... but an ole Pro like me doesn't need it!
I'll just put my years of experience and wisdom to work and nail one of them
"wall-hangers"!

Stay warm....

Well....I'm back from sunny and WARM California....

Paul and I headed down to San Diego to San Vicente Resevoir last Sunday.
We got there about 6:30 AM, paid the lake fees ($3.50), bought a one-day
license ($5.50), rented a boat with a Honda 7.5hp ($22 for the day), and
were fishing by 7AM.

It was a little cool and breezy when we launched, but when the sun got up
the wind calmed down. The lake gets v-e-r-y deep, real f-a-s-t....up to
180'. At some points, we'd be only 25' from shore and be sitting over
45-50' of water. In one place, I was up in the bow looking down at the
bottom about 10' down and Paul's transducer on the stern was reading 40'!
Talk about drop-offs!!

The fishing was r-e-a-l slow as a front had moved thru a couple days before,
so aside from a couple of strikes, we got skunked. There was a small
tourney going on that day and the largest bass caught was 7+ lbs, but the
day before, a 9 lber was caught and the Thursday before a 15+ lber was
weighed in!! YES...the San Diego Lakes DO have some wall-hangers.

Some other species in the lake include lake trout (up to 20lbs), and blue
catfish (up to 46+ lbs).

BTW...another lake in the area that we heard was real good was Lake Hodges,
but we just didn't have time to get back.

Yes, we got skunked....but at least I did come back with a sun-burn!!
