Weather permiting, a few of us are going to try our luck Sat. morning
on Wallum Lake for some of these recently stocked salmon. This
may be a last chance to wet a line before ice in and the cold doesn't
seem to bother the salmon.
Right now we have three, and don mac might become a fourth. I'll
be using a scanoe with a small thruster and will keep the front
seat open for anyone crazy enough to join us... otherwise I'll take
my nephew... I know he can catch'em and he's still smilin' from
when he landed that 10 lber two weeks ago.
We'll be launching from the beach at the Wallum Lake Terrace at
about 8 AM. The launch at Douglas State Park is still open I've
been told. We'll be at the south end of the lake near the hospital.
Don't forget a flask of brandy or schnopps to warm your inners ;^)
Call 226-2128 before 4 this afternoon for instructions on how to
get there from here.

So no more takers huh.... Don't let a little snow scare you guys
off. Wallum Lake won't freeze over for at least another week or
so. The only problem might be the NE wind though... gets pretty
cold in hills of Burrrrrrrillville. I'll have to see Dr. Magillicuty
for a few pints of his gut warmin' tonic.
Anybody know the limit for Salmon in RI?

Well we met the HARBOR MASTER and his nephew (who caught the ten
pounder). I'm talkin DEADLY COLD on Wallum Sat.
We arrived about 1/2 hour late to find a note on the gate saying
that the HARBOR MASTER wouldn't wait any longer, see ya on the water.
As soon as we got out of the truck we started to examine our sanity.
We rigged four poles. one with a streamer, one with a mooselook
wobbler, one with a small repala and one with a bucktail mepps.
Took off and within 150 yards of the beach, the Texican hooked into
a fish. I had no idea that he had about 75 yards of line out!
I pulled in the other rods and the texican did a great job of workin
the salmon to the boat. As the salmon is 2 feet from the boat we
realize we aint got no net. Oh Shit!
Just then the line broke and the fish slowly drifted away with the
mepps sparkling in his mouth. (I hate that part) We were sick.
To make a long sory shorter, we stayed about 1 1/2 hours and had
to leave due to severe cold and wind.
some guy in a bass tracker showed us his 7-8 pounder.
BTW The TEXICAN's Salmon probably went 7-9 pounds. A beautifull
fish.
If anyone wants to take me in his REAL boat in the next few days,
I would love to try again.

Hey TBDW, I'm glad you guys at least hooked into one of them landlock
salmon... the adrendalin rush must have kept you warm for at least
the five minutes anyways. ;^) My nephew didn't have a net either
when he and his gramps caught their fish... the ol' man (about 73)
had to "tail 'em" into the boat.
At least you can verify that the fish are there and are catchable
in this cold weather. Ol' gramps sais that the salmon will hit
near the surface about up to 100 ft off shore till ice-in. Although
you guys did manage to hook onto one in the middle of the lake,
I think that was the exception (but who knows for sure anyway).
I too will probably hang it up for the season unless I can get
with someone who has a REAL boat. Sitting in that scanoe for
a couple hours in temperatures around 0 deg. F with the wind chill
is tough on the knees. And heading up wind frrom the hospital
to the Terrace took forever with only a trollin motor.
Hey what the heck, it wasn't that had, was it? The fresh air
helped get them computer cobwebs off the brain.

Oh yeah... The limit for salmon in RI from Dec 1 till ice-out is
two fish per person. That's either on a line or thru the ice.

Question?
If Wallum is 1/2 in RI. and 1/2 in Ma. and you launch in Ma. and
catch the Fish in RI. then return to Ma. to pull the boat out?
Oh well it probably doesn't matter since I have only seen one fish
cop one time and that was three years ago and he didn't ask to see
fish or licenses.

| The wheels are still on the trailer, BUT, the trailer registration
ran out in November... I realized thi Friday night after hearing
that the storm fizzled out, I was planning on joining you guys Sat
morning, until I realized this.....
Also, the hull is empty, removed the outboard, deck, troll motor,
lcr, etc. already... BUT if I get the trailer registered this week,
I may be tempted to toss on the outboard and take a ride down there...

Will somebody please take their boat out of storage for one more
shot at the salmon in Wallum Lake. TBDW has a bad case of salmon
fever and promised to remember to bring his net this time. These
good size salmon are just begging to be caught and want to try out
TBDW's new smoker.

| I still have my boat available for some fishing (it never gets put
away for the winter, I stopped doing that about 3 years ago). Does
this lake have any BASS in it? I'd be coming from Kingston, N.H..
and could get talked into it if I knew that the lake had bass. If
the fishing for salmon was slow we could at least catch something.

Yes, the lake does have large and small mouth bass as well as
brown, rainbow, and native lake trout.
When you hook into one of them 5 - 10 pound landlocked salmon
you will forget about bass till pre-spawn in the spring.
TBDW has the honors, he's got the fever real bad !

what I here ensures that you get skunked ;^) Want to end the
season with the biggest catch of the year (even though its not
a BASS)?
Yeah ... thats the ticket. Maybe some friendly competition for
the biggest salmon. And the winner gets to cook it for the loosers.

some kind of fungus and are floating up on the beach.
Anyone know anything about this?

| Garry,
I spoke to Don yesterday afternoon and he said that he would be
away today (a meeting somewhere) and would be back tomorrow.
Now on this salmon trip, let me get this straight; you want me
to travel almost 2 hours to a lake that has fish I never fish for,
a fish I don't eat, and a one which has a fungus and is about to die.
In addition, I get to freeze, because we'll be fishing the windward
side of the lake, and if we were going to fish for bass they are
usually very small and hard to catch... If it sounds like I'm backing
out, your right, I am. I guess I'll stick to the lakes I know I
can catch fish in, this time of year, even though the fish may be small
and they're bass. Sorry, you didn't do a very good job of convincing
me to go...ALMOST...WHEW, that was close.

Hey, I've been in all morning TBDW. Should have let us know you
were comming.
As for the fungus.....
I was told that the state released these breeders due to over-
crowding at the hatchery. Seems that the population was getting
too dense and some of the fish had contracted a skin fungus due
to rubbing together and reducing their protective slime.
The fish are otherwise healthy and eatable, or they would not have
been released into the lakes. I've also heard that the fish caught
within the first two weeks after being stocked had empty stomachs
showing no signs of eating natural lake foods (Whats around this
time of year for them to eat anyway? No bugs, etc.) After such
an abundant stocking of breeders at this time of year, it should
be expected that a small percentage may die as a result of the
transfer and culture shock of a new environment.
Did the one that got away from the "Texican" seem unhealthy after
putting up a good fight then breaking the line after seeing you
guys ready to grab him at the boat? I didn't see any lying
dead on the beach after my two laps around the lake.
Call the RI Department of Environmental Management for their
official statement regarding this matter of fungus and the general
health and well being of the salmon.
I didn't intentionally withhold this info, just didn't think
it mattered.

I just called the RI DEM Fish and Wildlife Division for their
official response to the Fungus topic. They said that some of
the fish may have contracted a secondary skin infection due to
abrassions from the concrete rtaining walls at the hatchery in
Attleboro, MA.; and from the handling and transportation tanks
to the designated lakes. The fish are otherwise healthy and
there have been no reports of dead salmon washing up on shore
at Wallum Lake or any of the other stocked areas.
They did say that this release was a planned stocking, and denied
that the fungus was a result of the over-crowding at the hatchery.
They also added that when transporting large quantitites of fish
this size you can expect that some may get banged up more than others
and some may even not survive the trip.
I hope that this clerifies and any rumors that anyone may have heard
regarding the health of the salmon in Wallum Lake. I hope that
TBDW's note doesn't scare anyone off. When do any of us get a
chance at salmon fishing without having to go the the big "O" or
put up with the large crowns during the salmon runs.
Don Mac said that the landlocked salmon in some of the NH lakes
run on the small 1 to 2 lb. size. These recently stocked breeders
run between 5 and 10 lbs. and are more catchable now than they
will be when once they know their way around their new habitat.
Hey.... I'm not trying to twist anyones arm to go get these fish.
I could keep this spot as my salmon "Honeyhole" and let you guys
drool when I report on my biggest catch. I just wanted to let
you all in on this little publicized stocking and let you share
my find.
But don't just don't ask me where I plan on catching my 8 lb. +
HAWGs.... ;^) OK.

A mass license is probably OK, even if you fish in the RI end.
Call RI DEM Fish and Wildlife Div. at 401-789-3094 to be sure.
Don't see game wardens around too much, but since a lot of
hunting for deer is done in the woods adjacent ot the lake
one might show up at the launch at Douglasa State Park.
Ice is comming fast, my lake is about the same size as Wallum (but
not nearly as deep) and it was about 90% ice this AM. Wallum should
be good for another week or so. This weekend is probably the last
shot until the ice is safe.

| Jim took me to his hotspot on Saturday, we caught 16 bass, with
Jim getting most of them... along with some pickeral and a lunker
(pound?) perch... The bass were on the small side. I was using the
ultralight, so it was alot of fun.

Ok........ we all know that fish loose several pound in the live
well...... 24 inches long
I want to take this time to thank and congratulate Capt. Rich Neal
and the "bartender" The famous HARBOR MASTER.
A really beautiful day.
It was the MOOSEALOOK WOBBLER (Fluorescent orange).
The fish was 24 inches long and wieghed 4 1/2 pounds. When I got
home I cleaned the fish in prep for smoking and began to realize
that this be some SKINNY Salmon. Two very wierd things;
1) The Salmon had no food in her stomach.
2) The salmon was loaded with EGGS! Yes that's right eggs.

Listen to the complaints... "the fish was skinny, no food in
her stomach and she was full of eggs" :^)
And you should have added that it didn't put up much of a fight
for its size. We had five lines out trolling when the salmon hit
TBDW orange wobbler and Capt. Neil and myself quickly reeled in
the other lines so he would'nt get tangled up and loose it. But
the fish ran staight at the back of the boat and just about jumped
in the net!
So TBDW gets his salmon on his second time out at Wallum and ends
up with about 2.5 pounds of fresh fish for his smoker.
Nice catch anyway. And at least I know the one that got away
from the TEXICAN may still be out their for MY salmon steaks.

After two outing to Wallum Lake, we have either hooked into one
(the one that got away story), seen another fisherman's nice catch,
and finally landed one last Sunday. So far TBDW and myself have
logged only about 4 to 5 hours on the lake under some pretty bad
conditions with at least something to show for our efforts.

| From the DEC 10th issue of the fisherman, page 6.
LANDLOCKED SALMON STOCKED IN RHODY
An unannounced and unexpected stocking of 500 to 600 landlocked
salmon in Rhode Island waters this fall caught most local anglers
uprepared.
The Fish and Wildlife Division planted fish weighing up to nine
pounds in the following waters: Wallum Lake, Burrilville; Olney
Pond, Lincoln State Park; Stafford Pond, Tiverton; Carbuncle Pond,
a F&W reservation, Coventry. Also, Wood River received a supply
of salmon reported stoacked in pools near various dams from Rt.
165 downstream through Arcadia Park to Alton on Rt. 91.
The landlocks were raised at the Federal Hatchery, Attleboro, MA
and are breeders who have seen there best days. John Cronan, the
Fish and Wildlife director, reported that more may be stocked when
and if provided by the hatchery. The river already contains Atlantic
salmon parr which measure 6 to 9 inches and are protected. They
look like brown trout but if hooked should be released unharmed.
There are no regulations published about this fishery, but some
anglers have had success with spinning lures and flies. The survivors
may be around in the spring...maybe.
A boat is useful to fish the ponds mentioned above. Wallum Lake
is accessible from Zambarano State Hospital and the Douglas State
Forest in Douglas, MA, both from Rt. 100. Olney Pond borders Rt,
146 in Lincoln; Stafford Pond borders Rt. 81 in Tiverton via the
Mt. Hope Bridge. Carbuncle Pond is off Rt, 14 near the Conn. line.

Thanks for the info. This doesn't sound that bad.
As for "breeders that have seen better days"... sure they may be
getting a little old and past thier breeding prime. And 500 to
600 fish going up to 9 lbs may take up too much room at the federal
hatchery and compete too much for the food supply.... thus maybe
stunting or crowding the smaller salmon.
After being fed at the hatchery for so long, these older salmon
may have a harder time adjusting to their new environments than
say small trout stocked in the spring. And as I've stated before,
most reports say that what fish have been caught had empty stomachs..
They now have a adjust real fast to finding their own food, which
is very limited this time a year (unlike during spring releases).
This may be what they mean by "a few of the survivors may be around
by spring".
Anyway, the survivors will still offer a challenge to any fisherman
who hooks onto one of these 9 pounders on light to medium tackle
usually used in these predominently "trout" ponds and lakes.
The guy at my local tackle shop took a picture of two brothers who
live in town... both were holding two salmon and all four fish were
over seven pounds. These guys bought up the shop's supply of their
favorite lure and the biggest net he had after their last outing
when they failed to boat about a half-dozen of these "seen better
days" salmon. Since then the guy at he tackle shop said these
guys were catching a ton of them and loving every minute of it.

I HAVE A PLACE ON WALLUM LAKE, THE YELLOW HOUSE WITH THE CEMENT
WALL JUST AROUND THE POINT FROM THE RESIDENTS' BEACH. OUR NEIGHBOR
SAID HE CAUGHT A 7 POUND TROUT OFF HIS LAWN ON SAT. ON A BIG SHINER.
OF COURSE I TOLD HIM HE WAS FULL OF ____,AS WELL AS WHISKY. I GUESS
I HAVE TO APOLOGIZE TO HIM NOW. MAYBE NOT, IF HE CAN'T TELL A LANDLOCK
FROM A TROUT HE DON'T DESERVE AN APOLOGY.

The trout in a lake that size are usually tough to locate.

I USUALLY FISH THE QUABBIN, SO WALLUM LAKE LOOKS LIKE A COVE TO

I'LL GO AFTER SOME OF THE STOCKIES IN THE SPRING WHEN I DON'T HAVE
A WHOLE DAY TO FISH, AND LATER IN THE YEAR TURN TO BASS.

I'VE BOUNCED RECORDER SIGNALS ALL OVER THAT LAKE AND KNOW EVERY
HOLE AND BAR IN THE PLACE--MOST OF THEM ARE WEARING A FEW OF MY
LURES TO BOOT.
WALLUM'S PROBLEM IS ACID. EVERY FEW YEARS THEY LIME IT (USUALLY
R.I. DOES IT) AND IT PICKS UP FOR A WHILE, THEN GOES DOWN-HILL AGAIN
THEY TRIED INTRODUCING A NEW FORAGE BASE A FEW YEARS BACK (SOME
SORT OF LAND-LOCKED HERRING FROM NEW JERSY), AND IT LOOKED LIKE
THEY MIGHT TAKE, BUT IN A COUPLE OF YEARS THE LAKE TURNED TO VINEGAR
AGAIN AND GOOD BYE HERRING!
I HAVE SEEN A FEW (AND ONLY A FEW) GOOD LARGEMOUTHS COME OUT OF
THE LAKE, MOST OF THE ONES WE GET ARE POPCORNS - NO CRAWFISH - VERY
FEW BAITFISH - WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT TO CATCH IN SALAD DRESSING!!
I ALWAYS NEED SOME NEW TIPS!! I'VE BEEN SERIOUS FISHING SOME 30+
YEARS AND SOMEONE'S ALWAYS COMING UP WITH SOMETHING NEW. BASIC SHIT

Sorry if I offended you. Sounds like you are on top of the
situation at Wallum. Since I'm a lifelong resident of the
area and have been fishing all of the local ponds since I was
a kid, I may have been overly optimistic on my statements
regarding Wallum.
I have caught a good deal of browns and even an occational
lake trout at Wallum in the past. I haven't aggressivey fished
wallum for some time and got caught up in the Salmon fever. Hope
they take well. At leaste RI is doing its best to improve
the fishery in this pristine lake.
I have my best luck for bass at Pascoag Res. (my back yard), and
at Wilson's Res and Bowdish; both within 3 miles from my house.
Have you ever gone to Round Top for trout?

YEA, SALMON FEVER IS A REAL EASY DISEASE TO CATCH. I CAUGHT IT AT
QUABBIN QUITE A WHILE BACK AND I KEEP GETTING RELAPSES EVERY SPRING.
YOU WOULD THINK A COUPLE OF GOOD DAYS OF FISHING WOULD HELP, BUT
IT ONLY SEEMS TO MAKE IT WORSE.
I NEVER TRIED THOSE SPOTS YOU MENTIONED-BUT I'LL KEEP THEM IN MIND.

I backed off a little because you said you've covered every inch
of the lake with your electronics and know every hole, etc.
You also say that Wallum is a cove compared to Quabin. If you
fish quabin and have such an extensive knowledge of the acid
situation at Wallum, my two cents worth may not even be worth
that much ;^)
I've had my best luck in the past around the hospital, which
has since been posted "No Fishing" from land. Does this tell
you something? When I see a "No Fishing" sign it kind of gets
me thinking how good the fishery must be! and may risk the fine
or try anyway I can to try it out. The state probably posted
the land to cover its liability ;^) But most of my buddies
who work at the hospital fish thhere anyway with good catches
to prove my point.
Maybe we can get together sometime in the spring and I'll show
you my spots.

Regarding the no tresspassing. You may want to ask the hospital
security people. Sometimes they post places like that due to limited
parking and don't want you taking up a parking space that a visitor
would normally take. Also, you may want to point out (if there are
any rooms with windows facing the water) that you are in a sense
providing entertainment. I'd rather watch someone fishing than soaps
or game shows anyday.

WE ALWAYS WORK THE EDGE OF THE SHALLOW FLAT JUST BEFORE THERE WHERE

I'VE GOT THE ACID RAIN INFO BECAUSE MY BROTHER-IN-LAW IS A SCIENCE
TEACHER IN WORCESTER, AND THE SCIENCE CLUB PROJECT IS TO MONITOR
ACID RAIN, AND HIS JOB IS TO MONITOR THE SCIENCE CLUB! SOME OF THE
RESULTS ARE REALLY UNBELIEVABLE.
WHAT KIND OF BOAT ARE YOU FISHING FROM? I MAY HAVE SEEN YOU ON THE
LAKE BEFORE HAULING THEM OVER THE SIDE?

are another story. Do you think any servived the winter? What is

Keith,
Ice is out at Wallum Lake. I didn't hear of any of the salmonoids
being taken thru the ice this winter. But some were taken a Carbunkle
Pond, which was stocked at the same time as Wallum.
The trout and salmon season starts on the second sat. of April.
Wallum lake and all the other AAA rated ponds and streams in NW
RI are packed on opening day. However, I'm planning on going to
Wallum on Sunday after opening day to avoid the crowds.
To busy right now to even think of fishin' 8^(
I'll get something going in a few weeks.

I returned to Wallum on Sat for the opening of trout seasion in
RI. My nephew an I got on the water by 5:45 AM in our sconoe
and trolled a couple mooslock woblers till we got to our spot
and set anchor. I quickly rigged up a small pinhead shiner
and used a small acme spoon on the other rod. Within ten minutes
I had a fish on the shiner and landed a nice 16" rainbow trout.
About twenty minutes later I had on my second fish, a 13" brookie.
Then everything stpped dead and the legendary WALLUM lake winds
picked up and the temp dropped about 10 deg. Most of the other
30 or so baot were trollingBut we packed it in for a betteer day.
The day end report said a couple of 6 to 7 pounbd salmon were taken.
I guess some of the landlocks from last fall managed to survive
the winter.
