537.0. "Tuna Trip" by REGENT::BURBINE () Wed Nov 25 1987 13:29

I HAD AN IDEA THAT MAY PRODUCE SOME GOOD FISHING NEXT SPRING.
ANYBODY INTERESTED IN PUTTING TOGETHER A FISHING VACATION FOR
A FEW DAYS SOON AS THE TUNA COME BACK? I WILL VOLUNTEER MY BOAT
FOR A COUPLE OF TRIPS TO THE 'DUMP' OR ISLANDS AREA AND WE CAN
SPLIT THE FUEL COST. IF SEVERAL OF US GET TOGETHER AND POOL OUR
TECHNIQUES AND GEAR MAYBE WE COULD GET IN SOME SUPER FISHIN.

ANY BODY REALLY KNOW THE EARLIEST THE TUNA COME BACK?

EITHER YELLW, ALBACORE, (OR MAYBE EVEN A LITTLE DOGFISH FISHING)

ANY TAKERS?

WISH SPRIN WERE HERE

    anyplace.

The early tuna came in june this year but if you can find good thermals

I'd like to be considered also. The season here in Maine obviously
will start later than down there and I'd love to get a jump on it.

Great --I just realized that I could extract from tsese notes
files so it makes it super easy to keep track of responses. Let's
hope the fish get back early this year.

Oh--Paul you can stay at my house before we go fishing since
Maine is a little far to come in the morning ok/?

537.6always willing for tunaSMURF::AMATOMon Nov 30 1987 07:2420
    Norm,
Are you talking about the Block to Martha's Is. area? If so, some
giants were about 12 miles off Block for a few weeks in mid July.
The yellowfin, showed up real good the last week of July, in the
east fleet and at Butterfish. Butterfish only lasted about 2 weeks
last year tho, I think it was because of the whale carcass that
drew all the sharks. I'm not sure when the dump started to produce
tuna, but there were at least a couple of marlin taken in the Cuttyhunk
tournement, and that was July 10-11.

Depending where our boat winds up (Pt Judith RI, Danvers Port Ma, or
Portsmouth NH area) I'll be happy to take a couple of guys when
everybody goes out. We're just waiting to hear about a slip. She's
    a 24' Grady White with a 200hp Yam, name - Kingfisher.

I've only done stand up, but if she comes north, I'ld like to try to
handline some giants. Who knows, if we get really bold (or is that
stupid ? ;-)) I might throw a standup down while we're handlining and
see what happens? An old fashioned Nantucket sleigh ride perhaps?

Norm,

I would love to have the opportunity to try some tuna fishing. Although
most of my fishing is freshwater, I do occassionally make it out on party
boats, but that's not my idea of real fishing.

I don't have any heavy duty gear...but I DO HAVE a heavy duty DESIRE!!
I'd be happy to help share expenses!

Thanks for the offer!

                              -< LET'S GET READY >-

Looks like I will have a crew after all--

Following is a list of those that have expressed interest in
going fishing next summer. Four to five people is no problem for
one trip so I will schedule as many trips as are required to get
everyone out a least once. Normally I take Fridays off and
sometimes Mondays during the fishing season so most likely those
will be the days. Should someone have a big problem on those days
--well no sweat we will do it some other day as it comes up.

Sometime before spring I will publish an estimated cost list for
fuel etc. It really won't be bad at all if we have four or five
per trip. I will start freezing herring soon as they start to run
in the spring so we have plenty of chum stock.

I forgot to answer a question. Yes I mean the area south of
Marthas Vineyard around the area called the dump. Also will go to
the bay and past Nantucket if that is where they are.

1. re: what happen to .9

Wow I am sorry but have now fixed the screw-up I think. I must
have hit the wrong key while editing the list. BTW Joe, it's
   NORM.

2. re: -< Two more >-

   Welcome aboard Mike and Rick.

3. re:who keeps the fish?

Well since the crew will be sharing expenses and I don't do
this for a living the crew will get fifty percent of the
proceeds from the sale of any fish.

Any fish we decide to keep we will fillet out and divide out
with fifty percent going to the crew.

Final decision on whether to sell or keep is per the Captain
   of the boat.

Probably sell Bluefin, keep Albacore, Keep some and sell some
Yellowfin. (if the price is right it is always for sale)

It looks like you're accumulating quite a list of people interested.
If my boat is in the RI area, I'll be happy to take 1-2 guys and
meet you at the dump. We've got the 24' Grady, and I've got 2 standup
outfits, a harness, a belt and assorted tuna tackle. If the boats
is up north (Ma, or NH), I'll be begging a ride also :-). I'll

    Hi Norm,

Sounds like you got a big hit!

If you have room, I'd like to give it a try. I've never been
fishing for tuna. I have a surf rod and reel but it sounds like
that isn't going to cut it. I can do $$ though.
I'd be willing to sell any caught. (I would like to try a taste
of fresh tuna though, I heard it's delicious.)

   Joe,
Do you have a trailer for your Grady? If so the 'DUMP' is never
too far off.

It is beginning to look real good in the way of tackle between
Paul, you and what I hope to have by spring.

Maybe we should organize some bluefishing(not the charlie
kind) for next summer in order to let some of the landlocked
bass fishermen that have signed up some more fun. One day last
summer I took out a small party of friends and we brought back
450 pounds of Bluefish and five tired construction workers.

    re: .19 <trailer for the grady>

Sorry, no trailer. I don't think my chevette is up to pulling the
Grady. If we're in RI tho, I think the Dump is about 40 miles from
the marina. With nice weather, I can do that in a little under
2 hours. My fuel consumption isn't too bad, and I carry 90+ gallons.

I'm up for a bluefish trip sometime. That Sweet guy, aka Capt.
Codfish, has plenty of gear also. He's the best to have around
when your going for blues, but not the tuna species. Last year I took
him out for some yellowfin action. Both times I took him out after a
terrific trip the week before, and guess what we caught? Blues,
but no tuna! He's one of the best bluefisherman I know (hi bruce!:-)
Anyway, I promised him I'ld get him into some tuna, so I've got
to head over to Foodmart and get some starkist.

Like I said, if I'm down there I'm game, and the boat has the range.

    P.S.
Those bluefish are also great bait for sharks. I didn't have any
luck last season with them (saw 3, 2 of them were beaut's but nobody
would bite!), but I'ld like to give it a try if anybody else wants
to. I hear the mako's are terrific gamefish, jumpers, and they're
out at the dump. For anybody concerned about catching a shark,
if I'm not going to keep it, I plan on cutting the leader to release
them. If I get a keeper (like a mako), I've got a flying gaff to
handle a monster. Maybe a shark trip on the agenda?

will be here soon. Capt Cod or anyone else who would like to plan
a early flats trip to the Cape(Cod) in the spring; Give me a shout.

Now is the time to work on tackle and Ice fish. I've heard the smelt
are running on the so. shore; so thats the place to go.

As far as Sharks!!! Yes they are fun. I caught a couple trolling
squid in 200' of the Isles of Sholes last year. Small Blues about
5' long to big to bring in my boat though. There not hard to catch
and offer fine sport on 30lb class tackle.
537.26SMURF::AMATOThu Dec 03 1987 11:5641
    re: .21

The drive is too long to get to any place that I left out (like
the cape, I hate fighting traffic), or the slip prices were more
than our bank account can support. It only takes me 2 hrs to get
to Silver Springs Marina (1 that I'm waiting to hear from) so that's
not too bad. And the traffic isn't that bad down 93-95. I also
know the fishing around Block I., and Isle of Shoals NH, areas.
I admit I've been real wishy-washy on where to put the boat. After
the great first season we had off of Block (8 boated and 8 others
lost; better than a friend of mine that's been doing it for 15 years!),
its hard to think of moviong. But after seeing Steve G's notes,
WOW! Would I love to tie into a giant. Down in RI waters there
are more tuna, but smaller. Up north there are fewer but bigger.
My dream is to try for a line class record with 50lb STANDUP tackle
for a giant. The fish are big enough up here...

Sigh, decisions, decisions. No matter where she goes it looks like
there'll be plenty of people that'ld like a shot at some charlie.
Last year on my vacation, everybody dropped out at the last minute
and I almost didn't get out at all. Only after harrassing a friend
and his brother (with promises of $$ dancing in there heads) did
I get out. And we had a day like you dream about.

On that trip, there were only 3 boats around us, and they only got
1 fish between them. We literally had a feeding frenzy of school
blufins at the boat. One came to the boat to take a line! We boated
    2 blufin, (75 and 76lbs) and 1 60lb yellowfin. The 76'r took
my friend 1 1/2 hours to get to the boat on 80 lb tackle. It didn't
want to be caught! We lost 1 fish down deep (we had 2 on at
once, 1 was the yellowfin, when the yellowfin hit my fish down deep
and I dropped him). We lost another at the boat. It was about a
150lb yellowfin, but a little green when I tried to stick him with
the fixed gaff. He headed for parts unknown with the gaff, but
luckily the gaff was cleated off. Next day I purchased the flying
gaff. And we lost another small one at the boat, wasn't hooked
good. All this in 3 hours of fishing, I use 50 lb standup, and
my 2 friends had 80 lb standup.

I had 2 days like that down there, lots of action! But a giant
    would be nice...

HI!
Just wanted everybody to know that the fishing trips are still on
for next summer and thought I would list those already signed up.
I called Brownell last week and scheduled to get the 'ANZO' back
in the water. The magic day is May 6. Now I sure hope that the
weather cooperates and gives us some nice days for
recommissioning her during April. Since Santa was 'REAL' this
year we have new side mount outrigger holders and an anchor winch
to install. Also got the ok to buy trim tabs this year.
Picked up 300 foot of 1/2 inch un-manilla for deeper water
anchoring last week. BTW-I do not know if any one else out there
uses this stuff that SPAGS sells but it really is fantastic line.
Please let me know if I missed anyone.
