| You may have a $5 Montague or a $1500 Leonard... What's the rod maker's
name? There is an antique auction in Maine each year and old stuff is
being bought up for investment potential or collectibles.
Thomas & Thomas out of Turners Falls, Massachusetts will appraise the rod
for a $5.00 fee which I believe includes postage. They will restore the
rod if you wish and will also advertise and sell the rod on consignment
for a percentage.
Good Luck..

| Also, if you're not in a rush to get rid of it...
Every February there's a sportsman show at the Centrum in Worcester.
There are also a number of dealers that attend and that specialize in
custom-made and antique flyrods, so they would be able to give you an
appraisal as well. It would be a good idea to get several.

| Martin Keane in Stockbridge Mass. is probably the largest (and
reputable to boot) antique rod dealer in the country. A call to
him might be worthwhile, or you might be able to figure out what
you have by consulting his book "Classic Rods and Rod Makers". There
is a guy in DEC - NR02 named Arch Walker (remember the Walker fly
reel ? John DeInnocentis is probably familiar with it), who has
a great collection of antiques and an absolutely encyclopedic knowledge
of antique rods and reels who I'm certain can help you out. Please
reference my name if you call Arch.

Jack Varley

| I have an old level wind, no gears. about 3" tall & maybe 1.5"
wide. It looks like painted brass. It has a clicker switch. Real
state of the art stuff. It has no name, no patent # & NO NUTHIN.
It still has a very smooth bushing. I live in Maryland, and dont
get up north to often. Any ideas where I can find out what the heck
I've got down here?
P.S. Its nice to talk about fishing, for a change.

| Paul..
I went through a few of T & T's classic tackle lists and I don't
see any reference to a C.E. Wheeler. There was a W.R. Wheeler
rod listed in the Handyman Special section. (maybe a relative?).
8'0" antique lancewood rod 3/2. Built at the turn of the century
by this respected Hartford, CT maker. Very unusual and rare ornate
formed aluminum reel seat. Butt was made longer than mid and tips.
One tip is 2" short. Missing one guide. In fitted velour case marked
"Shiply, Phila". High quality N/S (nickle/Silver) ferrules. Rod
appears in original cond. Entire rod is spiral wound. Vert rare
rod. Fair......... $200.
T&T classic tackle orders and information phone# 1 413 863-9727.
Why not drop a dime on these people. They get a moderate 25%
commission rate and claim a 98% success (sold) ratio of accepted
goods.
Don't know if this helps,
John

B'mouth... If you can wait 'til next year, each October there is
an antique tackle, etc. show at Cape May NJ. I know this is still
a bit of a drive, but the ferry ride is nice. (Remember, the Jersey
Cape IS BELOW the Mason-Dixon line so its not like you're going
north!)
