| Those guys on T.V. get paid for using that fish scent.
I didnt believe in it until this year. A 4 buck investment
last a long time. I use FS-454 and FISH FORMULA this year
both are good and I cant make up my mind which one I prefer.
But the FISH FORMULA is easier to use.
Try some, for the price of the rebel, rapalla or 50 worms, it worth
it. Just consider it another lure investment.

| Perhaps more important than providing a scent to lure or entice a fish to
strike your bait is that they help to mask the human odor which is far more
offensive. This is especially true for us smokers as the smell of nicotine
on your hands is easily transfered to your baits, not to mention oil, gas,
etc. These odors can very quickly turn fish off.

| ...and replacing the conventional 'stock' pump top with a trigger
type handle makes it easier to use more accurately... I just started
using this stuff towards the end of this season, can't say that
I've noticed too much of a difference... also, I took one of those
drink holders that hook onto things and taped it to my seat pedestal,
seems to work well, keeping the bottle in a handy spot, out of the
way, and it can't tip over and roll around...

ps: I'v tried Berkley Strike and I think it's too much of a pain
to apply....

I used "Dr. Juice" this season, and I did notice a difference.
Generally, I wouldn't use it for the first hour or so, then if nothing
was happening I'd put the ol' juice on, and things would always
pick up.
I was trout hunting this week end, and did very well using the
juice, many people got skunked, including my partner. The only thing
done differently between my partenr and I, was I used the juice
on my lure the night before.

I used "Dr Juice" last season and this season and didn't noticed
any difference with it. However, I just switched over to "Fish
Formula II Crawdad Scent". I've only been out using twice so far,
but I think it's alot better. At least I was getting action when
no one was catching fish. In fact I picked up a nice small mouth
yesterday a little over 2 1/2 pounds using it on a crawdad crank bait.

| TRY THE BERKLEY MOLDABLE SOLID STICKS. IF YOU PUT IT ON RIGHT,AND
IN THE RIGHT PLACE, IT LASTS A GOOD LONG TIME. MOST OF THE OTHER SCENTS
WASH OFF TOO QUICK.
ALSO I'VE FOUND THAT THE SMALLMOUTHS SEEM TO LIKE THE "TROUT" FLAVOR
BETTER THAN THE "BASS" FLAVOR THAT THE LARGEMOUTHS PREFER
WORKS FOR ME

| I first tried using Berkley Strike, squeezing it onto my bait...
Next I tried putting the Strike into a small container and dunk'n
my baits... Then I tried using Berkleys little white pellets to
hold the scent longer... Next was Dr. Juice, squezzing a drop or
2 occasionally... None of these methods could keep my interest,
it all seemed like to much of a pain. At the end of the year, for
the last tourny or 2 I went Fish Formula with trigger type sprayer.
To me, this is the only method that I can put up with. You do waste
alot, spraying it like that -- but it's quick and easy. And I'll
only use it during tourny's anyway (since that seems to be the only
time that I have troublt catching fish!8^)
I haven't been convinced that they make much of a difference...
But they will obviously mask any 'bad' odors and I'm sure they don't
hurt...

| (moderator hat on) Please lighten up on the adjectives. We almost
lost this notesfile (not too long ago) because of the language that
was used in here. Now, I know what you typed wasn't offensive,
but we're making a REAL effort not to let us get back on that track
again... Thanks...
(moderator hat off)
It may be in here someplace else, but I've hears that Salmon have
a keener sense of smell than most fresh water gamefish, and there
fore attractants will be more effectice on them...

511.10 | When it make cents to use scents | VICKI::DODIER | | Tue Dec 29 1987 08:51 | 19 |
| Something I heard that kind of makes sense when using scents.
If your fishing slow (i.e. worm fishing) it has more impact then
if your fishing fast (i.e. trolling or a quickly retrieved crank
bait).
On the lighter side, everybody seems to have a favorite lure.
That is the lure you feel the "luckiest" with and/or catch the most
fish with. I've seen this many times over where 2 people are using
the exact same lure/bait and one catches fish while the other doesn't.
One of the 2 is using their favorite lure/bait (one they feel confident
or lucky with) and as a result probably impart some minute difference
in the action of the lure. If by using scents you feel luckier, then
maybe there's some additional benefit.

BTW - Sorry Joe, I couldn't think of a nicer way to explain your
smelt fishing results last year. Have you tried the new improved
dead tomycod scent ;-)
