Sound good, nice fishing. I've been using the same technique
the last few nights.... but with no luck at all. Since I get home
at about 6:30 there isn't much time left to fish. So I've been
walking the shore (took out my docks last weekend) using a repela
as you described. Maybe its the time of day and I'll give it another
try this weekend when the sun is high (and warm).
Any other comments and suggestions.

| re: .3
What was it, a teal or woody?
Up until Tuesday morning I had five rebels in my my tackle box.
Three about the 4" length ( 1 silver side black back, 1 gold
side black back, 1 jointed gold side black back). I then have
two about 5" (3 sets of trebles), one silver side/ black back
and the other the gold side black back. I've had them all for
years and the smaller gold side black back rebel has very little
paint left on the back. When the worms don't produce, the rebel
always comes through with something. I don't recall ever catching
anything on the jointed rebel. My favorite is the bigger silver
sided baby. I don't think the color has anything to do with it.
I think its more the retrieve and the "smilie face" definitely has
to have something to do with the production.
My partner lost (fish broke line), my smaller silver sided rebel. I
was using the gold sided one (4"er). I passed up to him the 5/6"
silver sided rebel which he tied on with a laugh. "What the hell
you gonna catch with this? We ain't in the ocean *%&%lips." I
proceeded to tell him of my theory (big bait yield bigger fish). He
made a few casts, and then we both had a laugh when he reeled in a
bass about 8" long. On his next cast he brought in the bass that I
think would have tipped the scales a tad better than four pounds.
About twenty minutes later he brought in a pickerel guessing 17 - 18",
not sure as he wouldn't pick it up, preferring to hold his line and
remove the trebles with the needle nose while the fish was still in
the water. This is a pretty tricky move in a canoe, and the next
time he decides to do it his gonna get a paddle upside the head.
Oh well, you gotta have something to bust each other about during the
course of a day, and the next several times out.
The only other time I ever caught bass like we did this past Tuesday
was about 4 years ago. Another friend and I caught them ALL on worms,
and all were no bigger than 2lbs, great fun on an ultra lite w/4lb
test. In fact, my ultra lite is the only rod I use unless I'm
in a place with stumps.
Gotta be honest. I've been reading this file for quite awhile
now and you guys have brought me through some pretty rough days at
work. Your a great bunch characters. My fears, however, are that my
hunting partner and I would fit right in with you guys on one of your
excursions, and both of us would wind up either divorced (hummmm.....
more fishin time), or dead. One of these days though, one of these
days.

507.6 | A moment of Paradise... | FEISTY::TOMAS | Joe | Tue Oct 27 1987 10:03 | 63 |
| Like a few others, last Saturday was an ideal fall day for bassin. I got to
one of my favorite ponds early in the morning. The sun was just over the
tree tops shining through the early morning fog, creating an eerie effect
across the pond. The air was still crisp and cold. The water was perfectly
calm...like a mirror. Suddenly, the silence was broken by the mornful wail
of a loon 50 yards away. I watched it as it slipped beneath the surface,
barely creating ripples that shimmered in the sun. Overhead, a red-tale
hawk silently circled looking for its morning meal. A movement to my left
caught my eye...three mallards had their wings flaired as they settled down
onto the water, disturbing the water and creating more ripples that again
glistened in the sun.
I sat in my boat for a few moments pondering and enjoying all the glory of
Mother Nature, but I was here to go fishing. I started my engine which
shattered the silence of the morning, slipped it into gear, and was soon
racing across the water to my favorite "honey hole."
As I approached my favorite spot, I killed the engine about 30 yards out and
used the electric motor to move in. Once again, the air was silent...except
for the sounds of my wake lapping up onto the shore. The water was much
clearer than usual, so I decided to stay further back from my "hole" and
make longer casts so as not to disturb any bass that might be lurking there.
I saw a swirl near a large sunken log in the shallows. Knowing the thrill
and enjoyment of catching bass with surface plugs, I picked up a rod with a
Zara Spook tied to the line. I made a long, high cast...the Spook landed
with a splash about 10 feet beyond the swirl. I immediately started twitching
and retrieving the plug, making it "walk the dog" across the calm surface.
As it approached the spot where the swirl was, I let it come to a rest,
allowing the ripples to die away. For what seemed like minutes, yet only
seconds, I twitched the Spook ever so slightly. Suddenly, the water erupted
with an explosion like I've never seen before! My heart pounded as adrenalin
pumped through my body. I immediately set the hook...then a second time as my
rod doubled over. Line started peeling off my reel against the drag as this
huge bass headed for the bottom. I put as much pressure as I dared, trying to
turn it away from the roots of the massive log from where it sought safety.
Minutes passed, as it made run after run. Finally, I turned this monster fish
away from the log. Then, without warning, it headed for the surface, sending
thousands of glistening droplets of water into the air as it jumped at least
three feet into the air. Its body shook violently, trying to dislodge this
hooked object from its mouth. I was in total awe at the mass of this beauty
from the deep. It was certainly much larger than any of the seven pound hawgs
I've caught in the past. Was it 8 pounds? 9?? Was it a new state record??
Keeping the line as tight as possible while it jumped three more times, I
finally got it near the boat. My heart was racing... I reached for my net,
hoping it was large enough to surround this monstrous fish. A vision of an
eight pound plus bass mounted over my fireplace flashed through my head.
I slipped the net into the water, slowly...carefully...guiding the bass to it.
Then....suddenly....I heard this buzzing sound in the distance. It quickly
became louder...and louder. "No...please...don't let this happen!" I thought.
But...it was too late...
... my dream was shattered by my alarm clock. It was 7:00 AM.
(sigh...but someday!)

The same thing happened to me the other day.....
As I made a short tangled cast with my ZEBCO 202, I looked up and
saw her scantilly clothed body standing at the end of the dock.
the breeze wisped through here frail hair... she waved....our eyes
met and I engaged the oars to slowly approach the dock....
She started to pant . ever so slightly...she had the faint hint
of perspiration on her pooched upper lip...
I better stop now I can't take anymore

Rich,
Sorry I asked.... I haven't had much luck lately either since I
took my boat out three weeks ago with a blown motor. No fun
fishin' from shore anymore.
However, today may be the last warm day of the season so I'm
out of here now to wet a line.
Wish me luck,

| Yeah, Don, I left early monday and hit a couple of my favorite
smallmouth feeding lanes on the Westfield River. Skunk City!
The Corps seems to be draining its upriver reservoirs, the river
was high without any appreciable rainfall in the last week. The
air temp was in the low 60's but the water temp felt 10 degrees
colder. I tried everything in the small box but concentrated on
a jig/grub combo. I guess the key to fall success is fishing slow
and that's hard to do in a raging river.
Right now it's in the low 70's. I wish I could leave early today
and take the boat out one last time. Sigh.

507.20 | Its Spring...right??? | OUTBAK::SCHOLZ | Ron....and thanks for all the fish | Fri Sep 09 1988 12:52 | 38 |
| With all flurry of giving pointers before or after the tournement
on fall fishing I just thought that I'd enter this note. FWIW
I don't think that there is any real 'mystery' to fall fishing.
It's just like spring fishing, but you have to think in the opposite
direction. This time of the year the fish are coming up, while in
spring they are going down. Make sense??? In spring you throw deep
and crank up, while in fall you throw shallow and crank down. That
way the lure is coming at the fish.
Now the smaller fish will be up most of the time, but the bigger
ones will still be working their way to the shallows for the fall
feast.
All this means is fishing the same ledges and drop-offs you fished
in spring but in the opposite direction.
Lures.......you pick em. Anything will work and this file is loaded
with peoples experience in what does and doesn't.......personally
I think they all work, and like someone (I think it was Joe) commented
at some time, its the confidence you have in a lure that is half
(if not more) of the battle. Works this way: if you have confidence
you more apt to stay with the lure and work it. Slow, fast, medium,
stop and start, twitch, etc.....you get the idea. While with a lure
that you don't really think will work, you will be more prone to
giving up on it quickly, not bothering to work it right or try to
be inventive with it. Now there is no question that on some days
certain lures will work and others that worked the day before will
not. There in lies some of the skill of this sport and one of the
reasons a lot of fisherpersons spend a lot of time becoming good
with a large variety of lures.....simple, huh???
Oh well, enough. See you all, again, on the 1st and good luck to
all.
Tight lines, Ranger Ron

| YO,
RE .21 Same goes for me.
Ron, I do not go deep and work the lures up
this time of year. I start right out at the surface and then down
a foot and repeat until I find a depth/retrieve speed that is working.
I start giving up on worms and use more "active" lures. Spinner
baits, crank baits, and twist tail grubs. I have seen LOTS of 3
and 4" bass in the shallows as of late FWIW. In fact I caught one
on a 1/2 oz spinner bait that was only 3"! the hook barely fit in
his mouth! I did not even know I had a fish. Talk about aggressive....
Things are heating up guys.....or is that cooling off....I had two
hit last night as soon as the plug hit the water. They never even
cared what it was!

507.23 | Up in Spring, Down in Fall.... | OUTBAK::SCHOLZ | Ron....and thanks for all the fish | Fri Sep 09 1988 15:36 | 17 |
| You got it Worm.....start shallow and work deeper....thats a classic
fall pattern.
I hope you are seeing alot of those 3-4 inch bass. Those are the
spawn of this spring....the more there are the more we will have.
You can determine how good the spring spawn was by trying to get
a count on these fish......10 per acre fair, 20 per - good, 30 per,
GREAT........You'll loss about half of them this winter, but these
will be the spawning bass in two years.
The next month and a half will be the prime fall feeding spurt.
Compliments the May Jun spring feed/spawn. Now if the weather will
only cooperate. Warm days and cool nights are the ticket.....
Keep up the good works.
Tight lines, Ranger Ron

| Well Bartons Cove did not fair to well with me yesterday. It was
my first time out there and I got the big goose egg. All to-
gether our club only brought in 7 fish. It was real slow for all
alot of short smallies in the river and a few largemouth in the
cove itself. Everything was caught on spinner baits. The river
was strange in the morning the current was strong going UP stream,
then about 10 A.M. it reversed and started moving downstream, I
guess their is a pumping station along the river. Oh well better
luck next time.

| Yes I finished with 289 points using the same points system you
have with seven tournaments.
That put me in 6 place in the club. Only 10 points out of the top
4. I have to see where the regionals are going to be to see if
It would be worth the time at the fishoffs. I am getting married
the next weekend and still have lots of work to do on my house.
I do love to fish in the fall and webster has been nice to me this

I'd love to, but we've got a 3 week old bambino fisherman and
I'm building a room in the basement so's I can clear out the
second bedroom for the little darlin.
I know my brother would like to join me for a REAL tournament -
(Both of us have been fishing just a little over a year) so I'd
like to plan on the same tourney in the Spring. We should have a
boat by then, too. Right now we've got a canoe - not bad, but
spending that much time in a canoe takes it's toll on your butt!
Lately I've been hitting the local ponds for an hour or two on
Saturday mornings, but the fishing's been metza-metz. I'm dying
to spend a weekend up to Winni once the nuts with the speedboats
are gone for the season...! Last Fall I caught a fat 19" smallie
right off the dock...
Next year for sure!
